How Credit Card Interest Is Calculated and When It Starts

Credit card interest often accrues daily, but the APR, balance method, transaction type, and grace-period terms determine what you owe and when interest starts.

Credit card interest is usually based on how much you owe, the APR for each type of balance, and how long that balance remains unpaid. Many issuers calculate it daily. For purchases, a grace period may let you avoid interest if you meet the card’s conditions and pay the required balance in full by the due date; cash advances generally begin accruing interest on the transaction date. Your card agreement and statement determine the exact method and terms.

What determines the interest charge?

Three factors drive most credit card interest: the balance subject to interest, the APR applied to that balance, and the time it remains outstanding. The calculation can differ across purchases, cash advances, and balance transfers. A card may have a separate APR for each category, and an APR may be promotional or variable. Your statement and card agreement identify the rates and balances that apply to your account.

Many issuers use a daily periodic rate and calculate interest from daily balances or an average daily balance. The exact treatment of new transactions, payments, credits, fees, and unpaid interest depends on the agreement. Do not assume one calculation convention applies to every card.

Daily periodic rate

A common way to express the daily periodic rate is the APR divided by 365. For illustration only, if a balance category had a 18% APR, the daily rate would be 18% ÷ 365, or about 0.0493% per day. That is not necessarily the rate or method on your card: use the APR and calculation terms in your own agreement.

Daily balance and average daily balance

With a daily-balance method, the issuer tracks the balance for each day in the billing period and applies the applicable daily rate. With an average-daily-balance method, it calculates an average from the daily balances for the period and applies the rate according to its stated method. CFPB contract definitions describe examples of both approaches. Issuers may also treat unpaid interest as part of a later daily balance, which can result in compounding.

For a simplified illustration, suppose a $1,000 balance stayed unchanged for 30 days at an 18% APR, with a daily rate of 18% ÷ 365 and no payments, new charges, or compounding. The approximate interest would be $1,000 × (0.18 ÷ 365) × 30, or $14.79. This is arithmetic to show how balance, rate, and time interact—not a prediction of a statement charge. Real balances may change during the period, and the issuer’s method and rounding rules matter.

Why an earlier payment can matter

When interest is accruing, a payment that reduces the balance earlier in the billing cycle can reduce the balance used for later days. That generally lowers subsequent interest compared with making the same payment later, all else equal. It does not necessarily erase interest already accrued before the payment reaches the issuer.

When interest starts on purchases

Many U.S. credit cards offer a purchase grace period: the time between the close of a billing cycle and the payment due date. If the card offers a grace period and you satisfy its conditions, paying the required balance in full on time can generally avoid interest on eligible purchases. Federal rules require disclosures about whether a grace period exists and its relevant conditions, but issuers are not required to offer one.

The grace period is conditional, not an automatic interest-free period for every transaction. The agreement defines which balance must be paid, which transactions qualify, and what deadlines apply. A cardholder who does not pay the required balance in full by the due date may lose the purchase grace period. The CFPB says that in that situation, new purchases in the next billing cycle may accrue interest from their transaction dates.

What “pay in full” means

Do not assume that paying the minimum, or paying an amount that seems close to the statement balance, preserves the grace period. The minimum payment is not the same as the amount required to avoid interest. Find the agreement’s grace-period terms and the statement’s due date and balance information; follow the stated amount and deadline. How many full, on-time payment cycles it takes to restore a grace period after losing it is agreement-specific.

The CFPB says issuers must establish procedures to assure bills are mailed or delivered at least 21 days before the payment due date. That is a billing-notice requirement, not a guarantee that every card has a 21-day grace period.

How different transaction types are treated

The transaction category can change both the APR and when interest begins. Check how the issuer classifies each transaction rather than relying only on the name shown in a payment app or at a terminal.

Balance type Typical interest timing What to verify
Purchases A grace period may apply if the card offers one and its conditions are met. If the grace period is unavailable or lost, new purchases may accrue interest from their transaction dates. Purchase APR, qualifying balance and payment deadline, and rules for losing or restoring the grace period.
Cash advances Interest generally starts on the transaction date; a purchase grace period usually does not apply. Cash-advance APR and whether the transaction is classified as a cash advance.
Balance transfers A promotional APR does not necessarily preserve the purchase grace period. Carrying a transfer balance can mean new purchases accrue interest from their transaction dates. Transfer APR and promotion terms, as well as the purchase grace-period conditions while a transfer balance remains.
Convenience checks and similar transactions Timing depends on classification and the agreement; some may be treated as cash advances. How the issuer classifies the transaction and which APR and terms apply.

Cash advances

Cash advances generally do not receive the purchase grace period. The CFPB says interest usually begins on the date of the transaction, and the cash-advance APR may be higher than the purchase APR. If you use a convenience check or a similar feature, look up its classification before relying on purchase terms.

Balance transfers and purchases on the same account

A low or promotional balance-transfer APR does not automatically make new purchases interest-free. The CFPB explains that, for most cards, carrying a balance can cause purchases to accrue interest from their transaction dates unless the entire balance—including the transferred amount—is paid in full by the due date. Read the terms for your specific card before treating a transfer offer and purchase grace period as separate benefits.

Why interest can appear after you pay

A payment can leave interest due because interest may have accrued while a balance was outstanding before the issuer received the payment. Paying off the displayed balance does not necessarily remove interest that accumulated during that time. When you have carried a balance, many issuers charge interest from the billing date until payment is received; the agreement governs the issuer’s precise timing and how payments are credited.

Also distinguish a payment that satisfies the current statement from one that pays the full amount required to avoid interest under the agreement. If a grace period was lost, making a full payment now may not immediately restore it, and the agreement determines how restoration works. Review the next statement and account terms to see whether interest continued to accrue and what balance it applied to.

What to check on the statement

  • Identify the balance categories listed, such as purchases, transfers, or cash advances.
  • Match each category to its APR, including any promotional or variable rate shown.
  • Check the statement balance, minimum payment, due date, and any disclosed amount or conditions for avoiding purchase interest.
  • Look for an interest-charge breakdown by balance category and compare it with the applicable agreement terms.
  • Check when the issuer received and credited your payment; the account agreement explains payment-crediting and interest timing.

How payments are applied when rates differ

Payment allocation matters when an account has multiple balances at different APRs. Under the federal rule described by the CFPB, the portion of a payment above the minimum generally goes first to the balance with the highest APR, then to lower-APR balances in descending order. Issuers generally decide how to allocate the portion that covers the minimum payment.

This means paying more than the minimum can direct the excess toward a higher-rate balance, but it does not mean the whole payment goes there. If you are carrying a promotional transfer balance alongside purchases or cash advances, check the statement and agreement to understand which balances remain and which rate applies to each.

A practical way to check your card’s terms

  1. Open the current card agreement. Find the sections on APRs, grace periods, balance computation, payment allocation, and transaction categories.
  2. Read the statement’s rate and balance details. Match each balance to its APR and note whether a rate is promotional or variable.
  3. Classify the transaction. Confirm whether it is a purchase, cash advance, transfer, or another category under the agreement.
  4. Check whether a purchase grace period applies. Find the balance amount the agreement requires you to pay and the date payment must be received.
  5. Trace the balance through the billing period. Account for transactions and payments on their actual dates; the statement’s interest calculation follows the issuer’s method, not a universal formula.
  6. Compare the charge with the terms. If the interest breakdown seems inconsistent, ask the issuer how it calculated the charge, how it classified the transactions, and when it credited the payment.

Common misunderstandings

  • “The APR is the amount I will pay each month.” APR is an annualized rate. A daily periodic rate and the balance’s time outstanding determine the interest charge under the issuer’s method.
  • “Every card gives purchases a grace period.” Issuers are not required to offer one, and a card that does may impose conditions.
  • “Paying the minimum avoids interest.” The minimum is a required payment amount, not generally the full balance needed to avoid interest on eligible purchases.
  • “A transfer promotion means new purchases are interest-free.” Carrying a transfer balance may affect the purchase grace period.
  • “Paying off a balance means no more interest can appear.” Interest may have accrued before the issuer received the payment, and the statement can reflect that timing.

Which terms control?

Use the current card agreement, APR disclosures, and billing statement for the account-specific answer. Terms, rates, grace-period conditions, payment-crediting practices, and calculation methods can differ and can change. CFPB consumer guidance explains the general rules, while the issuer’s agreement and the account’s current disclosures establish the details for your card.
