Credit card interest is usually calculated from the balance in each transaction category, the applicable APR, and the issuer’s daily-balance method. Your agreement determines the details: issuers may use an average daily balance or a daily balance, may use 360 or 365 to calculate the daily periodic rate, and may treat purchases, cash advances, and transfers differently. A grace period can prevent interest on qualifying purchases, but only if your account offers one and you meet its conditions.
What APR means—and what it does not tell you
A credit card’s annual percentage rate (APR) is an annualized rate for a type of balance, such as purchases, balance transfers, or cash advances. It is not necessarily the rate applied once a year or a flat monthly charge. When an issuer calculates interest daily, it converts the APR to a daily periodic rate (DPR) and applies that rate under the account’s balance-calculation method.

A card can have several APRs at the same time. For example, a promotional transfer balance may have a different rate from new purchases, and cash advances may be charged at another rate. The applicable rate and balance are calculated by category under the agreement; the statement can therefore show multiple balances subject to interest and separate interest charges.

How to calculate the daily periodic rate
The daily periodic rate is generally the APR divided by 360 or 365, depending on the issuer’s terms. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes both possible denominators in its guidance on daily periodic rates, last reviewed September 23, 2024. Do not assume every issuer uses 365.
For an illustrative calculation, suppose an account has an 18% APR and its terms use a 365-day year:
18% ÷ 365 = approximately 0.0493% per day
As a decimal for multiplication, 0.0493% is approximately 0.000493. If the terms instead use 360, the daily rate would be 18% ÷ 360, or 0.05% per day. That difference affects the calculation; the agreement’s disclosed method is the relevant one for your account.
A daily rate is not necessarily the whole monthly rate. The amount charged over a billing cycle depends on the balances to which that daily rate applies and the number of days involved. A changing balance, a different APR category, or compounding can change the result even when the APR stays the same.

How issuers calculate interest from daily balances
CFPB guidance says many card companies calculate interest daily, based on an average daily account balance. The exact method is set out in the card agreement. Two common calculation patterns help explain how a statement charge can arise.
Average daily balance
With an average-daily-balance method, the issuer determines the balance for each day according to the agreement, adds those daily balances, and divides by the number of days in the billing cycle. It then applies the relevant periodic rate and cycle-length treatment described by that method. The agreement may specify whether new transactions enter the calculation and whether unpaid interest is included in later balances.
In simplified form, the average is:
Average daily balance = sum of the daily balances ÷ days in the billing cycle

Do not treat that expression as a complete formula for every issuer. Agreements can differ in the balances included and in how the average is converted into a cycle charge. Check the account’s stated method rather than assuming that every “average daily balance” calculation handles transactions or interest identically.

Daily balance
With a daily-balance method, the issuer applies the daily periodic rate to each day’s balance and totals the resulting daily interest for the billing cycle. Depending on the agreement, a day’s balance may reflect the prior balance, posted purchases or other transactions, fees, payments, credits, and possibly interest from the preceding day.
If the prior day’s interest is added to the next day’s balance, the interest compounds daily: later interest is then calculated on a balance that includes earlier interest. CFPB’s definitions also describe daily-balance treatment that does not compound. The method and treatment in your agreement determine which applies.
A simplified numerical example
Assume, solely for illustration, a constant $1,000 balance for 30 days, an 18% APR, a 365-day denominator, and simple noncompounding daily interest. The arithmetic is:

This is an illustration derived from the stated assumptions, not a quote for a particular card or a prediction of a statement. An actual charge can differ if the issuer uses 360 days, the balance changes during the cycle, transactions fall into different APR categories, fees apply, the grace-period rules affect the balance, interest compounds, or rounding is handled differently.

Why payment timing can change the charge
When a balance is accruing interest daily, a payment or credit that posts earlier can reduce the balance used for subsequent days. The effect depends on when the payment is received and posted, the issuer’s balance rules, and whether the balance is actually accruing interest. Paying before the due date is not, by itself, proof that no interest will be charged: a grace period and its conditions matter for purchases.
Use the posted date and balance method in your agreement when trying to reconcile a payment with a statement. A payment made on one date may not affect the daily balance until it posts under the issuer’s procedures. Transactions and fees can also post at different times, so a beginning and ending balance alone may not show the daily values used in the calculation.

Purchases, balance transfers, cash advances, and promotional balances may have separate APRs and separate interest calculations. A statement may list each category’s APR, balance subject to interest, and interest charge. Read the category labels rather than assuming the entire account has one rate or one grace-period status.

Payment allocation can matter when multiple balances have different APRs. CFPB guidance says that when a payment is greater than the minimum amount due, the excess generally goes first to the balance with the highest APR. The allocation of the minimum portion follows separate rules and issuer terms. The specific agreement and statement help show how a payment was applied to the balances on your account.

What a grace period does—and when it applies
A grace period is generally the time between the end of a billing cycle and the payment due date. It can allow you to avoid interest on qualifying purchases if you pay the required balance in full and on time. The CFPB notes that card companies are not required to offer a grace period; the agreement determines whether your card has one and which balances qualify.
Grace periods usually apply to purchases, not cash advances. Balance transfers may also be ineligible, depending on the terms. If a purchase grace period applies, meeting its full-payment condition can prevent interest on eligible purchases for that cycle. If you do not meet the condition, purchases may accrue interest from their transaction dates. The rules for restoring a lost grace period—including how many full, on-time payment cycles are required—are set by the agreement.
An archived Logix Federal Credit Union agreement provides one issuer-specific example: it describes a 25-calendar-day purchase grace period and no grace period for balance transfers or cash advances. Those are terms in that agreement, not a general rule or a promise about another card. Use your own contract for the applicable period and eligibility.
How to check your statement and agreement
To understand why a charge appeared—or estimate what could accrue—compare the statement with the agreement in this order:
- Identify each balance category. Find the purchase, transfer, cash-advance, or promotional balance and its associated APR on the statement.
- Check the APR terms. Determine whether each rate is standard, promotional, or variable, and note which category it applies to.
- Find the calculation method. Look for the daily periodic rate or the agreement’s balance-computation explanation. Check whether the method includes new transactions and whether prior interest enters later daily balances.
- Review the grace-period conditions. Confirm which balances qualify, what amount must be paid, when it is due, and what the agreement says about restoring eligibility after a missed full payment.
- Compare balances subject to interest and charges. The periodic statement disclosures show the categories, balances subject to interest, and interest charges applicable to the cycle.
- Check payment allocation. If the account has balances at different rates, review how payments were applied, especially the portion above the minimum due.
For U.S. accounts, the periodic-statement disclosure requirements are addressed in Regulation Z, 12 CFR § 1026.7. The statement provides important figures, but the agreement supplies the account-specific calculation terms. If the figures still do not reconcile, ask the issuer which daily balances, transaction posting dates, rate, and calculation method it used for the charge in question.
Why your own agreement is the deciding reference
There is no single formula that accurately describes every card account. Issuers can differ in the daily-rate denominator, how they define daily balances, whether certain transactions are included, whether interest compounds, the grace-period rules, and payment allocation. Even two balances on one card can follow different APR and eligibility rules.
Use general formulas to understand the mechanics, not as a substitute for the terms attached to your account. The CFPB’s consumer guidance, last reviewed January 22, 2024 for its explanation of interest calculations, describes common daily methods; its rate and grace-period pages clarify that issuer terms matter. Your statement and card agreement determine which method and conditions govern your charge.
