Then compare that answer with the policy, current notices, and payment records. A bank draft or premium receipt can help trace a payment, but it does not by itself confirm that coverage is in force.
This guide is for U.S. policyholders and people helping them. Policy language and state rules vary, so the insurer’s record and the issued contract—not a general rule about all life insurance—determine the answer for an individual policy.

What “active” means—and why a payment receipt is not enough
A policy is commonly described as “active” or “in force” when its coverage has not ended under its terms. A missed or unprocessed premium can raise questions about overdue amounts, a grace period, or a lapse, but it does not establish the policy’s status by itself. Likewise, having paid premiums in the past does not prove that coverage remains active today.
Ask the insurer to state the policy’s status as of a particular date and to identify the effective date of any relevant change. If the policy is not in force, find out whether the insurer considers it lapsed, when that took effect, and whether the contract offers any remaining coverage or a way to restore it. Keep the response with the policy records.

The distinction matters because different policies can depend on different conditions. A term policy has a defined coverage period, while a cash-value policy may have policy values, charges, loans, or other contract provisions that affect whether it can continue. A payment transaction is evidence of a transaction; it is not a substitute for the insurer’s policy-specific status determination.
“Active” is not something you can reliably infer from a premium schedule, an online account label, or the fact that the insurer has not sent a cancellation notice. Those records can point you toward questions to ask, but they may not show whether a payment was credited, whether the policy has reached its term-end date, or whether policy values can cover ongoing costs. Ask for the status on the date that matters to you, rather than a vague answer about the policy’s general history.
How to verify a policy, step by step
1. Find the contract and identify the insurer
Start with the policy schedule or declarations page, the original contract, or a recent statement. Record the policy number and the insurer’s name. Also note the insured person, policy owner, issue date, premium amount and payment frequency, and any term-end date shown in the contract. These details help the insurer distinguish the policy from another contract or account.
Look through insurer letters and statements for a changed company name or a notice that another company assumed the policy. If the name on old paperwork is unfamiliar or no longer current, do not assume the contract disappeared or that the company named in a payment record is still the correct contact. Ask a state insurance department for help identifying the appropriate company if you cannot establish the carrier.
Keep the insured and owner details straight: they may not be the same person. If you are helping someone else, the insurer may ask what authority you have to discuss the policy. Ask what information or documentation it requires and how to submit it securely. Do not send sensitive policy or identity information to an address or phone number you have not independently verified.
2. Contact the insurer through a verified channel
Use contact information from a current policy statement, the insurer’s own website, or a state insurance department listing. Avoid relying on an old phone number or an unsolicited message when sharing policy information. Contact policyholder service and request a written response, such as a secure message or letter, that addresses the policy’s status as of a stated date.
Ask the insurer to confirm all of the following in that response:

- Whether a grace period or lapse process applies, including any relevant dates.
- If the insurer says the policy lapsed, the lapse effective date and contract provision applied.
- What options remain to restore coverage, if any, and the applicable requirements and deadline.
Make clear that you want the policy’s current, recorded status—not just confirmation that a payment was received or that the account appears in a customer portal. If the response is unclear, ask the insurer to explain what its status means for coverage on the date you asked about.

It can help to make the request precise: “Please confirm in writing whether policy number [number] is in force as of [date]. If it is not, please state the effective date and the contract provision that applies.” Then ask whether any premium is due, whether a grace period is running, and what action and deadline apply. A dated written answer gives you a record to compare with notices and payment evidence and can make follow-up questions more focused.
3. Reconcile the payment record against the policy
Gather premium notices and receipts, then compare them with bank or card statements. Check the dates, amounts, payment frequency, and policy number or other account reference. If the insurer says a premium is missing, ask whether a payment was received but applied to a different policy, posted late, returned, or otherwise not credited as expected. Provide transaction details through the insurer’s verified channel and ask for an updated written status after the discrepancy is reviewed.
Payment records can help locate an error, but they do not independently prove that coverage is active. A draft from a bank account or a receipt confirms only what that record shows about a transaction; the insurer must confirm how it was applied and what the policy’s resulting status is.

A difference is a reason to ask for an explanation, not a reason to assume either that coverage ended or that the amount shown on an old notice is still correct. Keep copies of notices, receipts, and relevant bank or card entries so you can identify the exact transaction being discussed.
4. Keep a dated record of the answer
Save the insurer’s message or letter, along with the policy documents, premium notices, receipts, and any follow-up correspondence. If you spoke by phone, note the date, the department contacted, and what you were told, then ask for the same determination in writing. If the insurer’s answer conflicts with the contract or payment records, identify the specific discrepancy and request a written explanation rather than relying on an informal summary.
When you follow up, refer to the policy number, the date of your original request, and the particular point that remains unresolved. Keep the insurer’s response and any documents it provides together. A record of a call or a payment attempt can help explain what happened, but it is not the same as written confirmation that coverage is active or has been reinstated.
What to check for each policy type
| Policy type | What can affect whether coverage continues | What to ask the insurer |
|---|---|---|
| Term life | The policy has a specified coverage period. Its end date and any renewal or conversion provisions are contract-specific. | Has the term ended? Does this contract provide a renewal or conversion option, and has the applicable deadline passed? |
| Whole life | Whole life has cash value and state-required nonforfeiture values, but the contract’s terms determine what applies to a particular policy. | What is the current status? What cash value, nonforfeiture, or other option is available under this contract, if any? |
| Universal life | Coverage can depend on whether available cash value is sufficient to cover insurance costs and other policy charges. | What is the current cash value, what charges or indebtedness apply, what premium is needed, and is there a lapse warning? |
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) describes universal life this way: “The policy remains active as long as the cash value is enough to cover insurance costs.” That is a general description, not a finding about any particular contract. The NAIC’s Insurance Topics | Life Insurance page, last updated November 14, 2025, also describes whole and universal life; the contract and applicable state requirements govern an individual policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a permanent or other cash-value policy, request a current in-force status and statement. Ask for the current value, ongoing insurance costs and other charges, any loan or other indebtedness, and any required premium or lapse warning. A statement from a previous year may help you understand the policy’s history, but it does not establish its status today.

The main comparison is what keeps coverage going. For term life, first compare the date you need coverage with the policy’s stated coverage period, then verify whether a renewal or conversion provision exists and whether its deadline has passed. Do not assume that a general description of common term lengths answers that question for your contract.
For whole life, ask the insurer to explain the policy’s current status and any cash value or nonforfeiture value that applies under the contract. Whole life policies have state-required nonforfeiture values, but that does not establish what a particular policy currently provides or whether its coverage is in force. Ask the insurer to identify the relevant provision and explain any option available to you.
For universal life, ask how the current value compares with insurance costs and other charges, and whether any loans or indebtedness affect the policy. Some universal life policies use available value to pay charges, so a past premium history or old statement may not tell you whether the policy can continue now. Ask whether a premium is required to keep it in force and whether the insurer has issued a lapse warning. Flexible premiums do not mean that no funding is ever needed.

If you missed a payment or the insurer says the policy lapsed
Do not assume a universal grace-period rule
There is no single grace-period length or lapse process that applies to every U.S. policy. The relevant contract provision and state rules matter. Ask the insurer whether a grace period applies to your policy, what date it began or ends, what amount is due, and what the insurer says will happen if the amount is not received by the applicable deadline. Get those details in writing.
A missed payment is a reason to contact the insurer promptly, not proof by itself that the policy has lapsed. Conversely, a payment attempt does not establish that the payment was received and credited or that coverage remained in force. Ask the insurer to clarify both the payment record and the policy status while the issue is being reviewed.
Request the lapse decision and every available option
If the insurer reports a lapse, ask for its decision in writing. Request the effective date, the contract provision the insurer applied, and an explanation of any remaining nonforfeiture value or extended coverage. Also ask whether reinstatement is available and, if so, the deadline, overdue premiums, interest, and evidence-of-insurability requirements. Do not assume reinstatement is guaranteed: availability and conditions depend on the contract and state rules.
If you are trying to resolve a missed payment, keep the insurer’s stated deadline in view while gathering records. If you dispute the amount or the application of a payment, send the evidence through a verified channel and request a written response explaining the status during the review. Do not treat a pending inquiry, a payment attempt, or a past premium history as confirmation that coverage has been restored.
Ask separately about the status of coverage during any period the insurer identifies as a grace period, lapse, or reinstatement review. Do not infer the answer from a general rule or from the fact that the insurer is accepting documents. The insurer should identify the contract provision and the dates that apply to your policy. If it says reinstatement is possible, get the requirements and deadline in writing and ask what confirmation it will provide once any required steps are completed.

If the insurer is unclear, unresponsive, or no longer identifiable
Contact the insurance department for the state or territory relevant to the policy if you cannot identify the current carrier, cannot get a response, or receive an answer that conflicts with your records. The NAIC provides a directory of state insurance departments and complaint channels. A regulator can provide the appropriate local contact or explain how to submit a consumer inquiry; it does not replace the insurer’s policy-specific status determination.
For example, the Illinois Department of Insurance says its department may be able to help determine which company assumed the policies of a defunct insurer. That is Illinois-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every department handles a carrier search in the same way. The Illinois department’s Individual Life Insurance FAQs provide that state’s information.
Before contacting a regulator, organize the carrier name, policy number if available, dates of contact, and copies of the documents relevant to the question. Explain whether you need help identifying a successor company, getting a response, or resolving a discrepancy. The regulator’s role is a consumer escalation route; ask the insurer for the actual status determination and contract basis for the policy.

If the policy belongs to someone who has died
The NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator is intended to help locate a deceased loved one’s lost policy and connect beneficiaries with insurers. It is not a tool for checking whether a living person’s policy is active. If a policy has been located, the insurer—not the locator—handles the claim and confirms what documentation is required.
The Louisiana Department of Insurance describes the locator as free, secure, and confidential. According to its Life Insurance Policy Search guidance, participating insurers report matches through the NAIC and insurers contact beneficiaries. The page says a response can take up to 90 business days; that is Louisiana’s description of the service, not a nationwide processing guarantee. It also says a requester may not hear back if there is no match or if the requester lacks beneficiary status or legal authority. For a located policy, the page says the insurer typically requires a certified death certificate and its claim form.
This locator serves a different purpose from contacting an insurer to confirm the status of a living person’s policy. If you are helping with a deceased person’s affairs, the locator can help identify a company when a policy cannot be found, but a possible match is not itself a claim approval or proof of a payable benefit. Follow the insurer’s instructions for the claim and required documents.
What to have ready before you call
- The policy number and the insurer name shown on the contract or current statement.
- The insured person’s name and the policy owner’s name.
- The policy schedule or declarations page, including any stated term-end date.
- Recent premium notices, receipts, and bank or card records for payments in question.
- The date for which you need a status confirmation.
- A list of the specific unanswered questions: overdue amount, grace-period dates, lapse date, current policy values, or reinstatement requirements, as applicable.
Keep the request focused on the policy’s recorded status and the dates that control it. If the insurer needs more information to locate the contract or discuss it with you, ask what information or authority it requires and how to provide it securely.

For a concise call, have the policy number and the date you want checked in front of you. Ask the representative to repeat the status and effective date, then request the answer in writing. If you are comparing old documents with a current answer, identify the exact notice or transaction and ask the insurer to explain how it relates to the policy record. This helps avoid treating an old billing record, a payment receipt, or a previous annual statement as a current coverage decision.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my life insurance policy is still in force?
Contact the insurer named on the contract, or its successor, through a verified channel and request written confirmation of the policy’s status as of a specific date. Ask for the effective date of that status and whether any premium is overdue, a grace period applies, or the policy has lapsed.
Does a bank draft or premium receipt prove my life insurance is active?
No. It can help establish that a transaction was attempted or recorded, but the insurer must confirm that the payment was applied to the correct policy and state the policy’s resulting status. Past premium payments alone do not prove coverage is active today.
What should I do if I missed a life insurance payment?
Contact the insurer promptly. Ask whether a grace period applies to your contract, what amount is due, the applicable dates, and what happens if payment is not received by the deadline. Grace periods and lapse procedures are not the same for every policy, so get the policy-specific answer in writing.
Can a lapsed life insurance policy be reinstated?
Possibly, but reinstatement is not guaranteed. Ask the insurer whether it is available under your contract and request the deadline, overdue premiums, interest, and evidence-of-insurability requirements in writing. Contract terms and state rules vary.
Can I use the NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator to check a living person’s coverage?
No. The locator is intended to help find a deceased loved one’s lost policy and connect beneficiaries with insurers. To check whether a living person’s policy is active, contact the insurer directly.
How long does it take to hear back from the NAIC policy locator?
The Louisiana Department of Insurance says a response can take up to 90 business days. That is the timing described by Louisiana for the service, not a nationwide guarantee. Its guidance also says a requester may not hear back if there is no match or the requester lacks beneficiary status or legal authority.
The Bottom Line
To find out whether your life insurance is still active, ask the insurer for a dated written status confirmation and compare it with the issued contract and payment records. Check the policy-specific term dates, cash-value details, grace or lapse provisions, and any reinstatement requirements. Do not treat a payment receipt, old statement, or general rule as proof of current coverage.
