First identify who operates it and what it can do with your money; verify the provider and any claimed partners through official sources; then examine the evidence, costs, risks, and account permissions. AI can help organize investment information, but its label does not establish an advantage or prove future performance.
The checks below apply across jurisdictions, but registration systems and investor protections differ. The US, UK, and EU sources cited here offer useful risk guidance; a US lookup is not a substitute for the official registration lookup in another country.

First work out what the service actually does
“AI investing tool” can describe very different services. A chatbot that explains a financial term does not pose the same risks as software that recommends a portfolio, sends trade instructions, or has authority to act in a brokerage account. Identify the actual service before evaluating its claims or agreeing to give it information or account access.
| What the service does | What to establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Explains or summarizes information | Which documents or data it uses, how current they are, and whether you can trace statements back to original sources | An explanation can be useful while still being incomplete, outdated, or wrong. |
| Recommends investments or a portfolio | What information it considers about you, what investments it can recommend, and who is responsible for the recommendation | A recommendation based on incomplete assumptions may not fit your finances, goals, or risk tolerance. |
| Sends trade instructions for execution | Which account it can access, what orders it may place, what limits apply, and how to stop it | FINRA describes auto-trading as a third party sending trading instructions directly to an investor’s brokerage account for execution. Transactions can occur before you notice them. |
A provider may combine these functions. Ask where AI enters the process: collecting data, summarizing documents, forecasting, allocating a portfolio, or generating or sending orders. Do not assume the provider’s marketing language tells you which tasks are automated or which require human review.

Verify the operator, people, and claimed relationships
Find the legal entity behind the service, the people accountable for it, the country where it operates, and any financial firm it says it works with. The company name in an app or advertisement may not be the legal name of the provider. Ask for the exact legal entity and the identity of the firm responsible for each part of the service.
Use the regulator lookup for the relevant jurisdiction
For a US provider or investment professional, Investor.gov recommends checking registration and disciplinary history. FINRA BrokerCheck is a resource for checking relevant individuals and firms. Start with the official lookup, search the exact legal name, and compare the result with the details the provider gave you. If you are outside the United States, use the official lookup maintained by the regulator in the country where the service operates or where you are receiving it; a US search alone does not establish status elsewhere.
If the provider claims a partnership with a bank, broker, adviser, or other firm, verify that claim independently. Find the firm’s contact details in its official directory or regulator listing and ask whether the relationship is real and what it covers. Do not rely on a phone number, email address, or link supplied only by the party making the claim.

Interpret registration narrowly
A registration check is a diligence step, not a guarantee that a service performs well, suits you, or will avoid losses. A record may help establish whether a named person or firm appears in a relevant system and whether disciplinary information is listed; it does not validate a return claim. Equally, the fact that a site has an app, customer reviews, or a professional-looking disclosure does not replace checking who is accountable for the service.

FINRA’s investor guidance on auto-trading dates to 2016. Its cautions about opaque operators, account access, and performance marketing remain useful questions to ask, but do not treat that older page as a complete statement of current law. The rules that apply depend on the service, the jurisdiction, and the activity it performs.
Make the AI claim specific enough to test
Ask the provider to describe what its system does in the actual service you are considering, not merely what AI can do in general. A meaningful explanation should identify the stage where the system is used, the information it processes, the kind of output it produces, and any person who reviews that output before it reaches you or affects a trade.
- Function: Does the system summarize filings, rank securities, forecast prices, set allocations, or initiate orders?
- Inputs: What market, company, or personal information does it use? How current is that information, and what happens when data are missing?
- Assumptions and limits: What conditions does the method rely on? What does it not consider?
- Human involvement: Who checks the output, and at what point? Is human review substantive or only a marketing description?
- Changes: Can the provider alter the model, data, or rules? How will it explain material changes that affect recommendations or trading?
Terms such as “AI-powered,” “proprietary algorithm,” and “machine learning” do not, on their own, establish what a system can do or whether it has an investment advantage. FINRA advises skepticism toward buzzwords without a specific explanation. The SEC’s March 18, 2024 statement on AI-related claims also emphasized that firms should describe their AI use accurately. SEC Chair Gary Gensler said, “Investment advisers or broker dealers should not mislead the public by saying they are using an AI model when they’re not, nor say that they’re using an AI model in a particular way, but not do so.” That is a warning about misleading claims, not proof that any particular service is reliable.
For a company making public claims about its AI use, the SEC Chair also said: “Public companies should make sure they have a reasonable basis for the claims they make and yes, the particular risks they face about their AI use, and investors should be told that basis.” A reader can use the same practical test: ask what supports the claim and what material risks accompany it. An answer that repeats promotional phrases instead of explaining the process leaves the central claim unverified.

Test performance claims instead of admiring the headline number
A return figure is meaningful only when you know what it measures and what was left out. Ask whether the result comes from actual live investing or a simulation, what period and market conditions it covers, which benchmark it is compared with, and whether it includes the full set of recommendations or trades. Seek the losing trades as well as the winners.
Questions to ask about the evidence
- Live or simulated? If simulated, ask what assumptions were used to model orders, execution, and costs. A backtest is a historical simulation, not a record of what you would necessarily have earned.
- Which dates and conditions? Request the start and end dates and ask whether the period includes different market conditions. A result from one selected period may not describe performance in another.
- What is the comparison? Ask which benchmark is used and whether the strategy and benchmark are being compared on a like-for-like basis, including the same dates and relevant costs.
- Is the record complete? Ask for the full set of signals, recommendations, or executed trades, not a selection of successful examples. FINRA warns that some pitches emphasize profitable trades while omitting investments that performed poorly.
- What costs are included? Check whether the claimed result accounts for fees and trading costs. A headline return that leaves expenses out is not the return you keep.
- Was it independently checked? Ask who verified the results and what exactly was verified. FINRA recommends skepticism toward claims without specifics or audited proof; a provider’s own presentation is not independent verification.
- Would the result matter to you? Compare the strategy’s risk and time horizon with your own needs. A historical return figure alone does not show whether a strategy suits your circumstances.
Be particularly cautious of claims framed as a regular, dependable income stream. FINRA’s auto-trading guidance describes some unregistered services promoting “consistent monthly returns of more than 10 percent.” That is a description of marketing claims, not an independently measured or verified performance result. The inter-agency alert from the SEC, NASAA, and FINRA warns that promises of high returns with little or no risk are a warning sign; even a registered professional should not be assumed capable of guaranteeing remarkable returns.
Do not let a backtest, testimonial, screenshot, or example trade stand in for a complete performance record. A testimonial may reflect one person’s experience, and a selected winning trade does not show how the service performed across all its recommendations. Ask for evidence in a form that allows you to understand both gains and losses, the relevant period, and what costs or assumptions apply. If the provider cannot substantiate a claim clearly, do not treat the claim as established.
Check whether the service fits your finances and objectives
Even a technically functioning tool can be unsuitable for a particular person. Automated services may rely on assumptions or consider only a limited universe of investments. They may not account for your other holdings, tax position, cash needs, investment experience, or a time horizon that changes. A service’s recommendation is not automatically a complete assessment of your financial situation.

Before relying on advice or allowing trades, compare the service’s stated approach with your own goals and constraints. Check whether its investment range, risk assumptions, and time horizon make sense for you. If a service asks for personal information to tailor its output, find out which information it actually uses and whether important parts of your circumstances are omitted.
Review the terms and all fees and expenses before signing up or funding an account. Establish how the provider is compensated, including whether it receives compensation connected to products, transactions, or referrals. These details can help you understand incentives and potential conflicts, but a disclosure by itself does not tell you whether the service is a good fit. Also check how to end the relationship and, where funds are held by a provider, how to withdraw them.

When a tool can trade, understand its authority before connecting an account. FINRA warns that auto-trading may lead to losses before an investor notices the transactions. It also cautions that unregistered services may ask for brokerage credentials, which can create privacy and financial-safety risks.

After enabling any account connection, monitor activity rather than treating automation as a set-and-forget arrangement. If a transaction is unfamiliar or the service behaves differently from what you authorized, use the account provider’s official contact channel promptly and follow its process for securing the account. The provider should be able to explain how access can be stopped; if that answer is unclear before you connect, do not proceed on the assumption that you can easily reverse it later.
Verify facts produced by a chatbot or investment assistant
AI-generated investment information can be stale, inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, or fabricated. Treat an output as a starting point for questions, not as evidence by itself. The FCA’s consumer guidance, updated July 30, 2026, advises: “Use AI to guide you where to dig deeper, not as your final answer.” It also says, “AI can help you understand the big picture without getting lost in financial jargon but always verify the facts using the original source.”
- Turn the answer into checkable claims. Separate a broad conclusion into specific facts, such as a company’s reported revenue, a fund’s stated fee, or a regulator’s warning.
- Follow citations to the original material. Do not stop at a chatbot’s summary or a search snippet. Open the underlying company disclosure, regulator publication, or other original document and confirm that it supports the statement.
- Check important points in more than one reliable place. Look for corroboration from authoritative sources, especially when a claim could affect a decision to invest or transfer money.
- Check dates and context. Confirm that the document is current enough for the question and that the AI has not confused a past event, forecast, or proposed change with a present fact.
Public AI output is not automatically regulated financial advice. FCA and ESMA guidance caution against relying solely on public AI when making financial decisions, and ESMA’s 2025 warning says that no one and nothing, including AI tools, can guarantee success in the stock market. The protections that apply depend on the jurisdiction and whether the service is supplied by an appropriately authorized firm. Do not assume that a general-purpose chatbot carries the same accountability or protections as a regulated service.

When comparing two or more services, assess each one against the same questions rather than letting a polished demonstration or a single advertised result dominate the decision. Record what the provider establishes and what remains unclear; an unanswered question is not evidence in the provider’s favor.
| Comparison area | What to compare | What a useful answer establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Accountable operator | Legal entity, responsible people, applicable jurisdiction, and claimed firm relationships | You can identify who operates the service and verify key claims through official channels. |
| AI function and data | Where AI is used, its inputs, data currency, limits, and human review | The provider explains the actual workflow rather than relying on labels or buzzwords. |
| Performance evidence | Live or simulated record, period, benchmark, full results, costs, and independent verification | You can evaluate the evidence with losses and relevant assumptions visible. |
| Fees and incentives | All fees and expenses, compensation arrangements, and possible conflicts | You can understand what you pay and how the provider may benefit from your use of the service. |
| Investment scope and assumptions | Investments considered, personal information used, and circumstances omitted | You can judge whether the method accounts for the factors relevant to your situation. |
| Permissions and privacy | Data collected, account access, trading authority, and limits | You know what information and actions the service can reach. |
| Oversight and control | Human review, customer support, transaction monitoring, and stopping or withdrawal steps | You know who can help and how to regain control if the service does not meet expectations. |
This comparison follows risks highlighted by FINRA, the SEC, the FCA, and ESMA; it is a diligence framework, not a rating of any provider. If a provider does not explain a material point, compare that uncertainty honestly rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
Recognize when not to proceed
Pause if a service pressures you to move quickly, refuses to identify its operator, or cannot explain what it does with your data and account. The same applies if a firm partnership cannot be confirmed independently, if performance examples omit losses or costs, or if the requested account access exceeds the function you thought you were buying.
- A promise of high returns with little or no risk, or language implying guaranteed success.
- Vague claims about a proprietary algorithm with no specific account of how it works.
- Return claims without dates, a benchmark, full results, cost treatment, or a credible explanation of verification.
- Testimonials or selected profitable trades offered instead of a complete record.
- Unexplained fees, compensation, conflicts, account authority, or procedures for ending the service.
- AI-generated claims that cannot be traced to original material or corroborated independently.
One warning sign does not by itself establish that a provider has broken a law, but it is a reason to slow down and seek verifiable answers. If the operator or the offer cannot be checked, do not transfer money or grant account access on the strength of its AI claims.
