The reliable way to estimate retirement-income tax is to calculate each income source separately, then combine the taxable amounts on the federal return. Social Security uses a special worksheet that counts half of your benefits plus other income (including tax-exempt interest); pensions and annuities may be partly tax-free when you recover your investment in the contract; and traditional IRA or employer-plan withdrawals follow their own rules. After deductions and credits, compare the projected tax with withholding and estimated payments.
This guide uses 2025 federal return figures and the Internal Revenue Service’s 2026 estimated-tax guidance. State income-tax treatment, early-distribution penalties, inherited accounts, and other specialized situations require separate state or IRS guidance.

The calculation in one view
Build the estimate in this order:
- Choose the tax year and expected filing status.
- Project annual income and collect the forms that document it.
- Use the Social Security worksheet to find the taxable benefit amount.
- Determine the taxable portion of each pension, annuity, IRA, or employer-plan distribution.
- Combine taxable income, apply deductions and credits, and calculate federal income tax.
- Subtract withholding and estimated payments to see whether you are on track or may owe more.
A payer’s gross monthly amount is not the same as taxable income. Basis, repayments, tax-exempt interest, filing status, and other household income can all change the result.

| Filing status | 2025 standard deduction | 2025 Social Security base amount |
|---|---|---|
| Single | $15,750 | $25,000 |
| Married filing separately | $15,750 | $0 if spouses lived together at any time during the year |
| Head of household | $23,625 | $25,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $31,500 | $32,000 |
| Qualifying surviving spouse | $31,500 | $25,000 |
The Social Security base amount is the starting comparison point in the benefits worksheet, not a tax bracket or an amount that makes all benefits taxable. Married people who file separately and lived apart for the entire year follow different worksheet rules, so use the instructions for that situation.
For 2025, a taxpayer age 65 or older may qualify for an enhanced senior deduction of up to $6,000 per eligible person ($12,000 for eligible spouses filing jointly). Eligibility conditions and income phaseouts apply; being retired or turning 65 does not automatically produce the maximum deduction. See the 2025 Form 1040 Instructions and Publication 554 for the qualification and phaseout rules.
2. Gather annual records, not just monthly figures
Estimate a full calendar year. If payments change during the year, add the actual projected payments for each period rather than multiplying one month by 12.

- Other income: taxable interest, dividends, capital gains, wages, rental income, and other expected receipts.
- Tax-exempt interest: municipal-bond and similar interest. It is generally not taxable itself, but it must be included in the Social Security worksheet.
- Payments and reductions: federal withholding, estimated payments, deductible contributions, deductions, and credits.
Keep the forms even when a payer reports a distribution as partly or fully nontaxable. The form and the plan’s basis records are inputs to the return, not a substitute for the applicable IRS worksheet.
3. Calculate the taxable part of Social Security
Social Security is neither automatically tax-free nor automatically fully taxable. The worksheet compares your filing-status base amount with a provisional-income calculation:
Provisional income = one-half of Social Security benefits + other income + tax-exempt interest.

“Other income” generally includes taxable pensions, IRA and plan distributions, interest, dividends, wages, and capital gains. Tax-exempt interest is added for this test even though it normally does not enter taxable income.

Apply the correct base amount
For 2025, the general base amounts are $25,000 for single, head-of-household, and qualifying-surviving-spouse filers; $32,000 for married filing jointly; and $0 for married filing separately when the spouses lived together during the year. If you are married filing separately and lived apart all year, use the separate instructions rather than the $0 rule.
Use the worksheet, not a shortcut percentage
When provisional income is above the applicable base amount, the worksheet computes the taxable benefit. In one income range, up to 50% of benefits can be included; at higher income levels, up to 85% can be included. The 85% figure is a ceiling on the portion of benefits included in taxable income, not an 85% income-tax rate.
Complete the Social Security Benefits Worksheet in the 2025 Form 1040 instructions or the applicable worksheet in Publication 915. The result can differ when benefits were repaid, when certain income is excluded, or when a traditional IRA contribution-and-deduction situation changes the worksheet. Follow the line instructions for your facts.
Illustrative worksheet setup
Suppose a joint filer projects $30,000 of Social Security, $20,000 of pension income, $4,000 of taxable interest, and $2,000 of tax-exempt interest. The first Social Security test uses $15,000 (half of $30,000) plus $20,000, $4,000, and $2,000, for provisional income of $41,000. That amount is compared with the 2025 joint-filer base amount of $32,000. The worksheet—not a flat 50% or 85% assumption—then determines the taxable benefit. This example demonstrates the inputs only; it is not a personalized tax result.
4. Identify the taxable portion of pensions and annuities
Do not treat every gross pension payment as fully taxable. Under Publication 575, periodic and nonperiodic payments can include a tax-free recovery of your investment in the contract. The taxable portion depends on the payment type and the recipient’s basis.

When basis matters
After-tax employee contributions or other investment in a contract generally represent basis. A payment can therefore contain a taxable part and a nontaxable recovery of that basis. Use the payer’s Form 1099-R and plan records, then apply the method and worksheet specified in Publication 575. If the payer has not calculated the taxable amount correctly, your records may be needed to make the adjustment on the return.
Periodic versus nonperiodic payments
Periodic annuity or pension payments and nonperiodic distributions can be treated differently. A one-time distribution, a payment from an annuity contract, and a regular monthly pension should not be run through one generic percentage. Read the relevant Publication 575 section and the Form 1099-R instructions for the distribution code and withholding shown.
5. Estimate taxes on IRA and employer-plan withdrawals
Traditional IRA distributions have separate guidance in Publication 590-B, which Publication 575 identifies as the companion source. The taxable amount depends on the account type, deductible and nondeductible contributions, and other facts. Employer-plan withdrawals likewise require the plan statement and Form 1099-R.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not assume that the amount deposited in your bank account equals the taxable amount. A payer may withhold federal tax before sending the distribution, while the gross distribution remains the amount reported for tax purposes. Conversely, an account with after-tax basis may produce a partly nontaxable distribution.
Situations requiring separate calculations
The general estimate in this guide does not calculate the 10% early-distribution additional tax, required minimum distributions, qualified charitable distributions, Roth basis, inherited-account rules, or special lump-sum elections. Those provisions can materially change the result. Identify them before finalizing an estimate and use the specific IRS publication and form instructions for the transaction.
6. Combine taxable income and apply 2025 deductions
Add the taxable portions of Social Security, pensions, annuities, IRA distributions, employer-plan withdrawals, and other income. Then apply adjustments, the standard or itemized deduction, any eligible senior deduction, and applicable credits before calculating the tax from the year’s tables or schedules.

| 2025 item | Amount or rule | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard deduction, single or married filing separately | $15,750 | Use only when the standard deduction is appropriate for the return. |
| Standard deduction, married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse | $31,500 | Applies to the listed filing statuses. |
| Standard deduction, head of household | $23,625 | Requires meeting the filing-status requirements. |
| Enhanced senior deduction | Up to $6,000 per eligible person; up to $12,000 for eligible spouses filing jointly | Eligibility and income phaseouts apply. |
These amounts are for 2025 returns. They are not a forecast of future-year deductions. Check the current Form 1040 Instructions for the tax year you are estimating.
7. Compare withholding with estimated-tax requirements
Withholding is a prepayment. It reduces the balance due or increases a refund, but it does not determine the final tax. Compare projected total tax with federal withholding from every payer, estimated payments, and expected credits.
2026 estimated-tax safe-harbor framework
Publication 575 states that for 2026, estimated tax generally applies when you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and credits and your payments are less than the smaller of 90% of current-year tax or 100% of prior-year tax. For taxpayers above the prior-year adjusted-gross-income threshold specified in the current instructions, the prior-year comparison becomes 110%. Complete rules, exceptions, and payment instructions are in Publication 575 and Publication 505.
| Comparison | What to calculate | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year method | Projected 2026 tax × 90% | Tests whether payments cover at least 90% of the current year’s liability. |
| Prior-year method | Prior-year tax × 100%, or 110% when the applicable AGI rule requires it | Provides a prior-year safe-harbor comparison when the conditions are met. |
| Expected balance | Projected tax − withholding − estimated payments − credits | Shows the amount that may remain due, subject to the complete rules. |
A safe harbor can limit an underpayment penalty; it does not make the final tax disappear. You can still owe the difference between total tax and payments when you file.
Choose a payment method
- Social Security withholding: Request federal withholding with Form W-4V.
- Periodic pension or annuity withholding: Use Form W-4P as directed by the payer.
- Certain nonperiodic distributions: Form W-4R may apply.
- Estimated payments: Use the current IRS payment instructions and schedule when withholding will not meet the projected liability or safe harbor.
Review all payers together. A default percentage selected by one pension administrator cannot account for a spouse’s income, taxable Social Security, investment income, deductions, or credits elsewhere on the return.

8. A practical annual workflow
- Open a worksheet for the correct year. Write down filing status, ages, and whether a spouse lived with you for the full year.
- Project gross annual amounts. Add each month’s expected Social Security, pension, annuity, IRA, and plan payments, including one-time distributions.
- Record basis and repayments. Separate after-tax contributions, investment in an annuity contract, and Social Security repayments from gross payments.
- Complete the Social Security worksheet. Add half of benefits, all required other income, and tax-exempt interest; then apply the filing-status thresholds.
- Determine each distribution’s taxable amount. Use Form 1099-R, plan records, Publication 575, and Publication 590-B rather than one blanket percentage.
- Apply deductions and credits. Use the 2025 standard deduction or itemized deduction, check the senior-deduction eligibility rules, and include applicable credits.
- Reconcile payments. Subtract withholding and estimated payments from projected tax and test the relevant safe-harbor comparison.
- Recheck after major changes. Recalculate after a new pension election, a large withdrawal, a sale of investments, a change in filing status, or a change in withholding.
9. Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using only taxable income to test Social Security
Problem: Tax-exempt interest is omitted because it is not generally taxable. Fix: Add it to the Social Security worksheet’s provisional-income calculation.

Applying the 85% figure as a tax rate
Problem: A retiree multiplies total income by 85%. Fix: Understand that up to 85% is the maximum share of Social Security benefits included in taxable income; ordinary income-tax rates are then applied to total taxable income.
Treating every 1099-R as fully taxable
Problem: After-tax basis or contract investment is ignored. Fix: Check the distribution code, basis records, and Publication 575 method.
Using last year’s thresholds
Problem: A prior-year deduction or Social Security threshold is carried forward. Fix: Start with the current year’s Form 1040 instructions and worksheets.
Confusing withholding with the final bill
Problem: A payer’s withholding is assumed to equal household tax. Fix: Add all income and payments, then compare projected tax with total withholding and credits.
Estimating from one month
Problem: A monthly amount is multiplied by 12 despite a midyear change or one-time withdrawal. Fix: Build an annual schedule by payment source and month.
10. Federal estimates do not determine state tax
This method estimates U.S. federal income tax only. States differ on Social Security, pension income, IRA distributions, deductions, and filing rules. Some states impose no broad income tax; others use different exclusions or thresholds. Check the revenue agency for your state of residence and any other jurisdiction that can tax the income.
Nonresident aliens and treaty claims also follow rules different from the general U.S. resident guidance in Publication 915. If that status applies, use the specialized IRS instructions rather than this general workflow.

11. When to obtain individualized help
A tax professional or the IRS instructions may be necessary when you have multiple states, a large one-time distribution, uncertain annuity basis, a repayment, an inherited account, required minimum distributions, a Roth conversion, an early distribution, or a complicated married-filing-separately situation. Bring the full-year statements and basis records; a monthly payment summary alone is not enough to reproduce the calculation.
Bottom line
Estimate retirement taxes by separating Social Security, pension and annuity payments, and account withdrawals; apply the worksheet and basis rules for each; then combine the taxable amounts with other income and current-year deductions. For 2025, use the stated Form 1040 figures and senior-deduction rules. For 2026 payments, compare withholding and credits with the applicable estimated-tax safe harbor, and treat state tax as a separate calculation.
