An eligible deposit at an FDIC-insured U.S. bank has federal deposit insurance within defined limits. A stablecoin does not: it is a digital asset designed to track a value, usually the U.S. dollar, and its holder does not get FDIC insurance on the token. A reserve backing and a dollar target can matter, but neither is the same as insurance or a guarantee that every holder can redeem at par on demand.
What is the difference between a stablecoin and a bank deposit?
A bank deposit is a claim on a bank under an account relationship. If the bank is FDIC-insured and the account and balance qualify, federal deposit insurance protects the covered amount if the bank fails. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) describes its role this way: “FDIC deposit insurance protects your money in deposit accounts at FDIC-insured banks in the event of a bank failure.” The FDIC’s deposit-insurance guidance explains which accounts qualify and how coverage is calculated.

A payment stablecoin is a digital asset intended to be used for payment or transfer and to maintain a stable value, commonly by tracking one U.S. dollar. An issuer holds reserve assets intended to support outstanding tokens. A holder may keep or transfer tokens through a wallet or platform, and may have a contractual route to redeem them. The Federal Reserve describes payment stablecoins and the U.S. reserve framework in its March 2026 note.
These are different legal and operating arrangements, not two versions of the same account. A bank deposit is a debt the bank owes its depositor. A stablecoin holder’s rights depend on the token issuer’s terms and the route through which the holder owns or redeems the token. A bank may hold deposits as part of a stablecoin issuer’s reserves, but that does not make token holders the bank’s depositors or give them ordinary FDIC coverage on their tokens.

Are stablecoins FDIC insured?
No. The FDIC insures qualifying deposit accounts at insured banks; it does not insure crypto assets such as stablecoins. Insurance on a bank’s reserve deposit, if any, applies according to the deposit’s actual ownership and the FDIC’s rules. It does not automatically pass through to every person holding tokens issued against that reserve. The FDIC’s April 2026 proposed-rule summary expressly addressed reserve deposits and proposed that stablecoin holders would not receive pass-through deposit insurance on them. That proposal is not itself a final rule.
Do not confuse a token that is backed by bank deposits with a deposit account in your own name. If you hold a stablecoin through an exchange or wallet service, you hold or have access to a digital asset under that service’s terms; the fact that an issuer or intermediary uses a bank does not by itself convert your position into an insured account. Similarly, a bank’s brand or the fact that a product is offered through a bank does not make every investment or crypto product an insured deposit.
For a bank account, check that the institution is FDIC-insured, identify the legal account owner and ownership category, and confirm that the product is a deposit rather than an investment. The coverage calculation depends on those details, not merely on the number of account statements or cards.

The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The limit is not $250,000 for each account number. Qualifying deposits owned in the same category at the same insured bank are generally added together when coverage is calculated. Different ownership categories may qualify for separate coverage if the accounts meet the applicable requirements. The FDIC’s coverage guidance, last updated April 1, 2024, explains the rules and examples.
If your balances approach or exceed the limit, calculate coverage based on your particular ownership, bank, and account types rather than assuming each account is independently protected. Joint, trust, and other ownership arrangements have specific conditions. Use the FDIC’s coverage materials or seek qualified advice if the amount is significant or the ownership structure is complex.

Insurance protects eligible deposits if an insured bank fails; it is not a guarantee against every loss involving a financial product. It does not insure a stablecoin, market investment, or non-deposit product just because a bank distributes it or holds assets connected to it.
What makes a stablecoin’s price stable—and what does not?
A dollar-pegged stablecoin has a design target: one token is intended to represent approximately one dollar. The issuer’s reserves are meant to support that target, while redemption terms and market trading help determine what a holder can actually get. These are related but separate questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Target: What value is the token designed to track?
- Backing: What assets does the issuer report holding against tokens and other liabilities?
- Market price: At what price can a holder sell the token through a particular venue at a particular time?
- Redemption right: Who may present tokens to the issuer, under what terms, and through which channel?
A token can trade below its target if buyers doubt the reserves, the issuer, or their ability to convert it; a market price close to one dollar does not by itself establish an unconditional right to redeem. Conversely, a reserve disclosure is evidence about backing, not a government guarantee, a substitute for insurance, or proof that every holder can withdraw immediately. Check whether a disclosure is an audit, an attestation, or another form of report, and read what it actually covers.
Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr warned about the importance of reserve quality and liquidity in an October 16, 2025 speech: “Because stablecoins are not backed by deposit insurance and stablecoin issuers do not have access to central bank liquidity, the quality and liquidity of their reserve assets is critical to their long-run viability.” Barr’s speech contrasts these features with the protections and liquidity arrangements associated with banks.
What stablecoin reserves can and cannot tell you
Reserve composition matters because assets differ in credit risk, liquidity, custody arrangements, and how quickly they can be converted to cash. The holder should also consider whether reserves are segregated, who controls them, how issuer liabilities are reported, and whether the issuer publishes independent assurance. A reserve ratio alone cannot answer all those questions.

In an April 8, 2026 note, the Federal Reserve reported issuer-attestation-based figures for two large dollar stablecoins. It described USDT as having about 1.04 times total reported reserves relative to the relevant token liabilities, with about 0.74 times in the note’s higher-quality reserve categories; it described USDC as backed at 1.0 times. These are dated figures, based on issuer attestations and the note’s own asset categorization, not a live measure or a guarantee of redemption. The Federal Reserve note explains its methodology and reserve discussion.

How do access and getting money out differ?
Accessing a bank deposit
You generally use the bank’s account and payment channels, subject to its terms and applicable law. If an insured bank fails, the FDIC says insured depositors have prompt access to insured deposits; the exact process depends on the resolution. The FDIC summarizes coverage and failure access in Deposit Insurance At A Glance. Deposit access is not the same as universal, uninterrupted availability: account restrictions, payment-system hours, identity checks, fraud controls, or an individual bank’s service outage may affect a particular transaction.
Accessing a stablecoin
To use a token, you need a compatible wallet or service, access to the relevant network, and enough information to send or receive it correctly. To turn it into bank money, you may need a platform that accepts the token or an issuer redemption channel for which you qualify. The available networks, fees, custody rules, identity checks, transfer limits, and service availability depend on the providers involved.
A blockchain transfer can be recorded and settled under the network’s operating rules, but that does not establish that it will always be faster or cheaper than a bank payment. Nor does a transfer guarantee that the recipient can redeem for dollars. A mistaken destination, unsupported network, frozen platform account, lost credentials, or unavailable conversion route can interrupt access; the ability to reverse or recover a transfer depends on the network and service, and may be limited.

Questions to answer before relying on a token for cash access
- Can you redeem directly with the issuer, or only sell through a platform or market?
- What eligibility rules, minimums, fees, processing times, and geographic restrictions apply?
- Does the route operate on weekends and holidays, and what happens during outages or heightened controls?
- Which network and wallet formats are supported, and can a mistaken transfer be recovered?
- How will you convert the token into money in a bank account when you need it?
There is no universal stablecoin transfer-speed, cost, or availability comparison established for every bank and token. Assess the actual path you would use, including the wallet or platform and the final conversion to dollars, rather than judging access by the word “digital.”

If an insured bank fails
FDIC insurance protects covered deposits up to the applicable limit and ownership category. The FDIC’s failure process is designed to provide prompt access to insured deposits, as described in its consumer overview. Amounts above applicable coverage limits are not made insured merely because they were held at an insured bank; the treatment of uninsured balances depends on the resolution and recovery process.
If a stablecoin issuer fails or cannot redeem
The token holder does not receive FDIC insurance for the token. The outcome depends on the issuer’s legal obligations, reserves, custody and intermediary arrangements, and the holder’s contractual and practical route to claim or sell the asset. A token may continue to trade, lose its peg, become difficult to redeem, or face restrictions; which outcome applies cannot be predicted from the peg or reserve figure alone.
The sources cited here do not establish a single failure process or recovery priority that applies to every stablecoin. Do not assume that an issuer’s reserves are automatically available to an individual holder, that a platform will continue processing withdrawals, or that a holder has the same position as a direct creditor or bank depositor. Read the issuer terms and the platform’s custody agreement to understand what claim you have and whom it is against.
What U.S. stablecoin rules mean—and what remains uncertain
The GENIUS Act was signed in July 2025, establishing a federal framework for payment stablecoins. Implementation details matter because a statute’s framework, a regulator’s proposed rules, and final operative requirements are not interchangeable. The Federal Reserve’s March 30, 2026 discussion describes payment stablecoins and the reserve framework. The Federal Reserve’s May 2026 Financial Stability Report said stablecoin assets had grown 16% from July 2025 to the end of 2025 and stood at approximately $320 billion at the report’s publication. Those figures describe that period and report date, not the market total on another date. See the report’s funding-risks discussion.

On April 7, 2026, the FDIC published a proposed rule for FDIC-supervised permitted payment stablecoin issuers and insured depository institutions. Its summary included a general proposed requirement to redeem within two business days and proposed that backing reserve deposits would not be insured to stablecoin holders on a pass-through basis. These are proposal details, not a statement that the two-business-day rule is final or currently binding. The source does not establish the final status of that rule after April 2026, so readers making a decision should check the regulator’s latest rule and the issuer’s current terms rather than treating the proposal as settled law.
Regulation may set issuer, reserve, and redemption standards, but it does not make a stablecoin an FDIC-insured deposit. A stablecoin’s specific terms, eligible redemption channels, fees, reserve disclosures, access restrictions, and available services still need to be checked for the issuer and route a person actually uses.
Are stablecoins safer than bank deposits?
There is no sound blanket answer for every bank and every token. For a person comparing an eligible balance within FDIC limits at an insured bank with a dollar-pegged stablecoin, the bank deposit has a protection the token does not: statutory FDIC coverage if the bank fails. That makes the deposit’s failure protection more clearly defined, within the coverage rules.

A stablecoin’s risks are different: reserve value and liquidity, issuer performance, custody and intermediary exposure, redemption eligibility, market liquidity, and technical operation all affect whether the holder can get dollars when needed. A holder who cannot redeem directly may depend on a platform or secondary market.
Make the comparison at the level of the actual arrangements: an identified deposit account, insured bank, and ownership category on one side; a named token, issuer terms, custody method, and redemption path on the other. Do not treat a stable target or reserve attestation as a substitute for the protections attached to a qualifying insured deposit.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before choosing where to keep dollars
- Identify what you own. Is it a deposit account in your name, a token held in your wallet, or a balance owed by an exchange or other service?
- Check insurance and coverage. For a bank deposit, verify the institution is FDIC-insured, confirm the product is a deposit, and calculate combined balances by bank and ownership category against the $250,000 standard limit.
- Read the stablecoin terms. Identify who may redeem, any minimums or fees, timing, geography limits, suspension rights, and whether you must use an intermediary.
- Inspect reserve information carefully. Check its publication date, asset categories, liabilities covered, custody, and whether the assurance is an audit or an attestation. Do not infer a government guarantee from it.
- Map the cash-out route. Confirm how to move from the asset or account to usable dollars, what services and networks are required, and what could interrupt that route.
- Match the instrument to the need. If your priority is insured cash within coverage limits and familiar bank access, a qualifying bank deposit directly addresses that need. If you need digital-token transfer functionality, evaluate the separate issuer, custody, redemption, and market risks instead of assuming deposit-like protection.
