A LinkedIn Poll takes only a few steps to publish, but useful results depend on more than clicking Post. Start with a focused question, give people two to four clear choices, select the right audience and duration, and invite voters to explain their answers. LinkedIn polls are useful for quick, directional feedback and conversation—not scientific surveys.
What a LinkedIn Poll is good for
Use a poll when your audience can make a meaningful choice quickly and you want to compare responses publicly. Common uses include:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Asking professionals about priorities, habits, preferences, or obstacles
- Testing whether a topic deserves a longer post, webinar, newsletter, or guide
- Collecting informal customer or community feedback
- Starting a discussion that does not require a long written response
- Helping a personal profile or LinkedIn Page generate a focused conversation
A poll is not a representative market survey, proof that the majority view is correct, or a substitute for interviews and validated research. Respondents are self-selected, and the people who see your poll may not match your customers or wider market.
LinkedIn also prohibits polls seeking sensitive information, including political opinions, health status, religious or philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation, trade-union membership, or precise geolocation. See LinkedIn’s poll FAQ for the platform’s current rules.

Before you create the poll
Answer these questions first:
- Who needs to answer? Your network, customers, job candidates, employees, or a specific professional group?
- What decision will the result inform? A poll is more useful when you know what you will do with the insight.
- Can the issue be reduced to two to four choices? If not, a text post or survey may be better.
- Are the options distinct? A voter should not have to guess which overlapping answer fits best.
- What will you ask in the comments? Plan a prompt that reveals context the vote cannot capture.
How to create a LinkedIn Poll on desktop
- Open LinkedIn and go to the homepage.
- Click Start a post.
- Open the More menu in the composer.
- Select Create a poll.
- Enter your question and answer choices.
- Select a duration: 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, or 2 weeks.
- Click Done.
- Review the visibility dropdown and select the intended audience.
- Add optional context in the post text field.
- Click Post.
LinkedIn’s current creation guidance documents a question limit of 140 characters, options of up to 30 characters each, and at least two choices. The creation guide and API specify a maximum of four choices. LinkedIn’s FAQ separately says that iOS may allow five, so two to four options is the safest cross-platform range. Check the live composer if your account displays different controls. See LinkedIn’s creation instructions and the poll API documentation.
How to create a LinkedIn Poll on mobile
- Open the LinkedIn app.
- Tap Post in the navigation bar.
- Tap More.
- Choose Poll.
- Enter the question and answer options.
- Choose the duration.
- Tap Done.
- Review the audience and accompanying text.
- Tap Post.
Labels can vary slightly by operating system, app version, account type, or LinkedIn experiment. If you do not see the exact wording above, look for Poll inside the normal post composer.
How to write a poll people can answer—and learn from
A strong poll asks about one decision, behavior, or opinion. It should make sense without a long explanation, matter to the people who will see it, and leave room for nuance in the comments.

- Priority: “Which skill is hardest to develop on your team?”
- Current behavior: “What is your biggest obstacle to publishing consistently?”
- Choice: “Which format helps you learn a new tool fastest?”
- Timing: “When do you usually review your quarterly goals?”
- Problem discovery: “What slows down your content approval process most?”
Questions to avoid
- Vague prompts such as “What do you think?”
- Questions with an obvious correct answer
- Double-barreled questions such as “Which tool is easiest and most powerful?”
- Overlapping choices
- False either-or questions when “it depends” is the honest answer
- Questions that promote your product so aggressively that the result is biased
- Requests for sensitive or personal information
Design better answer options
Keep the choices short, parallel, and easy to scan on a phone. Make them mutually distinct and realistic for the audience. Include “Not sure yet” only when uncertainty is a meaningful answer.
Use “Other” cautiously. If you include it, ask people to explain what is missing in the comments; otherwise, the option may collect votes without producing useful information. Do not make one choice much more specific than the others.
Choose the right poll duration
| Duration | Best fit |
|---|---|
| 1 day | A fast pulse check, event-day question, or time-sensitive decision |
| 3 days | A short campaign or question that needs more than one news cycle |
| 1 week | A practical default for a general professional audience across time zones |
| 2 weeks | A broader audience or a question requiring more reflection |
LinkedIn documents all four durations but does not establish a universal best choice. A longer window may gather more responses, while a shorter window can keep a time-sensitive discussion focused.

Add context and invite better comments
The poll question alone rarely explains why someone should participate. Add one sentence explaining the reason for the question, ask people to vote, and invite them to supply context.

Only promise a follow-up if you intend to publish one. Useful comment prompts include:
- “What made you choose that option?”
- “What would change your answer?”
- “What did I leave out?”
- “Does this differ by company size or industry?”
- “Can you share an example?”
- “What have you tried that failed?”
Reply substantively rather than posting repeated acknowledgments. Early replies can clarify the question, surface exceptions, and encourage others to contribute.
Who can create a poll?
Individual members can create polls from their home feed. LinkedIn Page super admins can create polls for Pages, and polls can also be created in LinkedIn Groups. A Page super admin can vote on behalf of a Page. Exact visibility and voter-information rules differ between member, Page, and Group polls.

LinkedIn polls are not anonymous. The poll author can see who voted and how each person voted. For a Page poll, Page admins can see voter identities and votes. LinkedIn’s documentation also says that, in a Group poll, only the poll author can view the results.

Voters can see aggregate percentages and vote counts after voting, and eligible viewers can see aggregate results after the poll closes. LinkedIn says voters can change or remove their vote while the poll remains open. Voting does not make the poll appear in the voter’s Activity section.
LinkedIn states that it cannot guarantee an author will not disclose a vote to others. Do not describe a LinkedIn Poll as private or anonymous when asking people to participate.
What to do after the poll closes
- Record the result: Note the date, audience, total votes, and distribution across choices.
- Read the comments: Look for explanations, exceptions, missing options, and differences by role or company size.
- Separate signal from sampling: A large vote count does not make a self-selected LinkedIn audience statistically representative.
- Share what you learned: Explain the result without claiming more certainty than the data supports.
- State what happens next: Turn the learning into a decision, resource, interview, experiment, or follow-up post.
A useful summary might say: “Among 186 people who answered this LinkedIn poll from my network during the first week of May, option A received 48%. The comments suggest the result varies by team size, so I’m treating this as a directional signal rather than a market-wide conclusion.”

LinkedIn’s creator guidance recommends asking follow-up questions, replying to comments, and posting about the results. That follow-up loop often creates more value than the initial vote.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether the poll worked
Measure usefulness separately from raw engagement. Track:
- Votes and vote distribution
- Substantive comments and replies
- Reactions and reposts
- Profile views or Page activity, where relevant
- New conversations, leads, interviews, or content ideas
- Whether the result changed a real decision
Ask whether the poll reached the intended audience, whether the choices answered the intended question, and whether commenters added useful context. A poll can succeed with modest reach if it reaches the right people and informs a decision. Conversely, a high vote count may be unhelpful if the audience was irrelevant.

Troubleshooting common problems
The Poll control is missing
Open the More menu in the standard post composer, update or restart the mobile app, and try LinkedIn on desktop. Account type, device, app version, and interface experiments can affect labels. A third-party scheduler may support ordinary posts without supporting native LinkedIn Poll objects.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe question or option is too long
Keep the question within the documented 140-character limit and each option within 30 characters. Move explanation into the accompanying post text or comments rather than forcing every qualification into the poll fields.
You found a mistake after publishing
LinkedIn says polls cannot be edited after publication. If the error materially changes the meaning, deletion and recreation may be the only practical remedy. Proofread the question, options, duration, and audience before clicking Post.
You want to reopen a closed poll
Closed polls cannot be reopened. If the question is still relevant, create a new poll and explain why you are running it again.
The poll gets votes but no insight
Add a direct comment prompt, reply to early responses, and ask for examples or exceptions. If the topic requires explanation rather than categorization, use a normal text post or a survey instead.

| Format | Use it when | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Poll | You need fast, in-feed directional feedback from a few choices. | Public conversation, limited options, and visible voter identity. |
| Normal text post | Nuance matters or you want unprompted answers. | No built-in vote distribution. |
| Dedicated survey tool | You need anonymous responses, longer questionnaires, skip logic, segmentation, exports, or more control over sampling. | More friction and less native in-feed visibility. |
| LinkedIn Brand Survey | You are using LinkedIn’s separate advertiser research product. | Different product, privacy model, and sponsorship requirements. |
LinkedIn itself is sufficient for creating a basic poll. Paid scheduling software is optional. Buffer, Hootsuite, and Sprout Social offer broader social publishing and analytics capabilities, but the cited vendor pages do not independently confirm native LinkedIn Poll scheduling. Verify that feature before buying.
HighLevel’s documentation states that its Social Planner supports LinkedIn polls with a 140-character question, two to four options of up to 30 characters, and 1-, 3-, 7-, or 14-day durations. It also documents a media limitation for the LinkedIn version. Treat that as vendor-documented functionality and confirm it for your account.
