If your Social Security earnings record is missing wages, shows the wrong amount, or includes earnings that belong to someone else, first identify the year and type of error. For an employer’s wage-reporting mistake, ask the employer to file Form W-2c. For other discrepancies, gather the records you have and contact the Social Security Administration (SSA); an online correction request is available to some people, but not everyone. SSA generally has 3 years, 3 months, and 15 days after the end of the tax year to correct a record, although specific exceptions can allow a later correction.

Why an earnings-record error matters

SSA uses your earnings history to calculate benefits. As the agency puts it, “We calculate your monthly retirement and disability benefit by looking at how you’ve earned.” A missing or misattributed year can affect eligibility or the amount of a benefit estimate or determination. It is worth checking the record even if you are not close to applying for benefits: finding an error earlier may make it easier to locate pay records or get help from a former employer.

Employers report wages to SSA. People who are self-employed report their earnings through tax returns. A wage record may be absent or wrong because an employer reported an incorrect amount, a name or Social Security number did not match, self-employment income was not recorded as expected, or earnings were posted to the wrong person. The correction route depends on which of these happened.

Check the record and identify the exact problem

  1. Sign in to my Social Security. Review the yearly earnings record and check whether the most recent year shown is correct. SSA recommends reviewing earnings because those amounts are used in benefit calculations.
  2. Write down the year and figures. For each discrepancy, note what the record shows and what you believe it should show. Keep separate notes for different years rather than combining them into one total.
  3. Classify the issue. Is it missing wages, an incorrect wage amount, self-employment income, or earnings that appear to belong to another person? Also note the employer, dates worked, and whether the problem could be a name or Social Security number mismatch.
  4. Gather records for that year. Keep copies of documents that support the amount and identity involved. The evidence SSA needs depends on the facts; the examples below are useful records, not a mandatory checklist for every case.

If the online record does not show enough detail to explain the discrepancy, use your own pay, tax, or employer records to describe what you believe is wrong when you contact SSA.

Choose the correction route that matches the error

Type of discrepancy First step What to expect
Employer-reported wages or worker identity details are wrong Ask the employer or payroll department to submit Form W-2c. The employer corrects its wage report. SSA says the employee does not need to make a separate correction once the employer has submitted the W-2c.
Missing wages or another error in the SSA record Gather available evidence and contact SSA through an available correction channel. SSA may ask for Form SSA-7008, more records, or information about the employer and work period.
Self-employment earnings are wrong or missing Gather the filed tax return and relevant schedules, then explain the year and amount in dispute to SSA. Tax-return evidence and filing timing matter. The rules for a correction after the ordinary time limit distinguish increases from reductions.
Earnings appear under the wrong person’s record Contact SSA and be prepared to verify your identity and explain why the earnings are not yours. SSA may request a declaration under penalty of perjury and supporting information. If identity theft is suspected, SSA directs people to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC); SSA can correct its own earnings record but does not handle identity-theft matters.

When an employer needs to file Form W-2c

If the underlying problem is an employer’s wage report—for example, a wrong wage amount or name or Social Security number—start with the employer or its payroll office. Ask whether it can review the report and submit Form W-2c, the corrected Wage and Tax Statement. A mismatch in the name or Social Security number can keep SSA from matching reported wages to your record.

SSA’s employer guidance says, “Employees do not need to make the corrections as long as their employer has submitted the W-2c.” That is different from asking SSA to investigate a discrepancy yourself: the employer corrects the report it filed, and you generally do not need to submit a separate correction for the same employer error after the W-2c is submitted. If the employer cannot resolve the matter, or the correction does not address the record problem, contact SSA with the information and evidence you have.

When to request a correction directly from SSA

For missing wages, a discrepancy that is not being corrected by the employer, or another issue in the SSA record, contact SSA. Some people can request a correction online through my Social Security. Online correction is not available to everyone; if the option is unavailable to you, SSA says you may need to visit a local office and provide additional information. Phone contact is also an option. Check SSA’s current contact instructions for the channel available to you rather than assuming that every case can be completed online.

Self-employment earnings

Self-employed people report earnings directly through tax filings, so the relevant evidence is different from an employer’s W-2. Have the filed return for the year in question and the schedules that show the income available when you contact SSA. SSA’s operating guidance identifies Form 1040 with Schedule SE and Schedule C or F as records that may help establish self-employment earnings; proof that a return was filed timely may also be relevant. Explain the year, the amount shown on the record, and the amount you believe should be credited.

Earnings attributed to someone else

If the record includes wages you did not earn, say clearly which entries are not yours and identify the years and employers involved. SSA’s guidance updated August 11, 2026, describes online and local-office routes and says the agency may verify identity or ask for a declaration under penalty of perjury. If SSA requests tax returns, its current FAQ recommends bringing copies for the years in question. SSA can address its earnings record; it does not investigate or resolve identity theft itself. For suspected identity theft, follow the FTC resources to which SSA directs you.

Gather evidence that fits your claim

Send or bring the records that best support the specific correction you are requesting. SSA may evaluate different evidence depending on whether the claim concerns wages, self-employment, a mismatched identity, or an entry assigned to the wrong person. Useful records can include:

Do not delay contacting SSA merely because you do not have every possible record. The agency’s public guidance gives examples of evidence, while its internal operating guidance describes additional evidence that may help in particular cases. Which items matter depends on the facts, and SSA may ask for more information after reviewing what you submit.

Submit a written request and keep a copy

Form SSA-7008, Request for Correction of Earnings Record, is the official form for describing the disputed period, employer or self-employment details, claimed earnings, and supporting evidence. SSA may ask you to complete it as part of the correction process. Under 20 CFR § 404.820, a correction request must be in writing, state that the record is incorrect, be signed, and identify the period involved; it should describe or include available evidence. The regulation also sets out where a request may be filed.

Understand the time limit—and the exceptions

Ordinarily, SSA cannot correct an earnings record after 3 years, 3 months, and 15 days have passed from the end of the taxable year. For a calendar tax year ending December 31, 2022, for example, the ordinary period ended April 15, 2026. The time limit is important, but it is not an absolute rule that every older year is permanently closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before the ordinary period expires, SSA may correct a year when satisfactory evidence shows that the record is wrong. After the period, 20 CFR §§ 404.821 and 404.822 allow specified exceptions. The categories include:

  • Correcting SSA’s records to agree with certain tax returns.
  • Correcting an error that is apparent from SSA’s own records.
  • Correcting an entry made for the wrong person or the wrong period.
  • Entering wages paid by an employer when none, or too little, were posted.

These are legal categories, not a promise that a particular old-year claim qualifies. If the year is beyond the ordinary period, identify the facts and evidence that may fit an exception and ask SSA to evaluate them. Avoid assuming either that an old year can never be fixed or that submitting a request guarantees a correction.

Special timing rule for self-employment income

For self-employment after the time limit, the regulation treats increases and reductions differently. Under the specified rule, a late-filed return may support removing or reducing self-employment income already posted, but generally cannot be used to increase it. Because the result turns on the filing history and the kind of change requested, provide the return and explain whether you are asking SSA to add income or reduce/remove an amount.

If SSA does not make the correction

Read the determination notice carefully. SSA’s internal process guidance says a person who disagrees with a correction determination has appeal rights. Follow the appeal instructions and deadlines printed in your notice; there is not one universal deadline established here for every possible correction case. Keep the notice with your submitted request and evidence, and refer to the years and amounts identified in the original submission when pursuing an appeal.
