Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare mobile carriers at the places you actually use your phone, then compare the full cost and conditions for the same number of lines and the same usage. Use the FCC National Broadband Map as a common reference, verify shortlisted options with each carrier’s own coverage tool, and check your phone and account obligations before you switch. Maps are estimates, not promises of service.
1. List the places where coverage matters
Start with the places you use your phone regularly, not just your home address. A carrier that looks strong at home may be less reliable at work or along your commute.
- Home, including rooms or areas where you need service.
- Work, school, or other regular destinations.
- Your usual driving, transit, or travel routes.
- Rural areas, indoor locations, or other places where losing service would cause a problem.
Coverage at one address does not establish how a network will perform everywhere you go.
2. Compare coverage maps carefully
Use the FCC map as a common reference
Open the FCC National Broadband Map and select Mobile Broadband; the map opens to fixed broadband by default. Search or zoom to the locations on your list, then compare providers and the available coverage layers. The map offers mobile filters for 3G, 4G, and two 5G speed thresholds, along with outdoor-stationary and in-vehicle views. It does not show indoor availability. FCC map guidance explains the available views.

Check shortlisted carriers’ own maps
Use each carrier’s address-based coverage tool as a second reference. Treat its colors as estimates rather than a direct, apples-to-apples comparison with another provider’s map: carriers may use different assumptions and may handle roaming differently. The FCC says mobile coverage is based on propagation modeling, so actual experience can vary with the device, terrain, and cell-site capacity. FCC coverage data notes describe these limitations.
Where possible, test a shortlisted network with your current phone, a trial or eSIM option, or a temporary line before moving your primary number. Trial availability depends on the provider; a map alone cannot establish whether a trial is offered.

3. Compare the full bill on equal terms
Make a side-by-side comparison using the same number of lines and realistic usage assumptions. A headline monthly price may depend on discounts or eligibility conditions and may omit charges that affect what you pay.
| What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Monthly service price | Regular price, any introductory or switching discount, how long it lasts, and whether autopay, paperless billing, or another condition is required. |
| Taxes and recurring charges | Taxes, regulatory fees, and carrier surcharges. These can vary by location. |
| One-time charges | Activation or connection fees and any other charges due when starting service. |
| Phone financing and promotions | Remaining device balance, monthly payments, trade-in credits, and whether a promotion requires a particular plan or financing period. |
| Features you will use | Data conditions, hotspot allowance, international features, paid extras, and subscriptions included at the quoted plan tier. |
The FCC’s fee-disclosure framework distinguishes recurring monthly charges from one-time fees and notes that government taxes, fees, and carrier surcharges may vary by location. FCC Order 22-7 describes that disclosure structure. Confirm current prices, fees, and eligibility directly with each provider before deciding; carrier offers and plan details can change.

4. Compare what each plan actually includes
Price is only useful when the plans provide comparable service. Read the terms for the features that matter to your household, including:
- Data thresholds and any prioritization conditions.
- Hotspot data and limits.
- International roaming or other international use.
- Network access and plan-tier restrictions.
- Customer-support options.
An “unlimited” label by itself does not mean two plans have identical data conditions or benefits. For example, Verizon’s carrier-published comparison shows that plan tiers can differ in hotspot, premium-data, and international features; its prices and offers are illustrative, can change, and are not an independent ranking of carriers. Verizon’s plan comparison is one example of the details to check.

5. Confirm your phone and switching obligations
Check compatibility and unlocking
Before switching, confirm that your phone is compatible with the new carrier and unlocked if required. Compatibility can depend on the network’s bands and services; support for one 5G band does not establish support for every 5G service. Verizon’s coverage map help page includes an address lookup and notes that device-band support can affect access to some 5G coverage.
Review balances, agreements, and credits
Check for a remaining phone balance, service agreement, or promotional credits with conditions that could be affected by leaving. Include any remaining payments or lost credits in the cost comparison rather than judging the switch only by the new plan’s monthly price.

Keep your number by having the new provider start the port
If you want to keep your phone number, contact the prospective carrier and ask it to initiate the transfer. The FCC says customers can generally keep a number when staying within the same geographic area, and number transfers can occur between wireline, IP, and wireless providers. Keep the old number active until the transfer is complete; do not cancel the old service first. See the FCC guide to porting and keeping your number.
Make the decision using your own priorities
There is no universal “best” carrier established by coverage maps or headline prices. Weigh the options against the locations, total expected cost, service conditions, and phone requirements that matter to you. A practical comparison should show, for each candidate, coverage at your key locations, monthly and first-year cost, data and feature limits, and any switching costs or obligations.
