How to Evaluate Sherwin-Williams Stock Beyond an Analyst Price Target

An analyst target is only a bundle of assumptions. Here is how to test SHW’s earnings, segment performance, cash generation, costs, guidance, and valuation range.

Evaluate Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) by building your own range of values from its earnings, cash generation, business segments, risks, and the assumptions investors are paying for—not by treating an analyst price target as a promise. The latest figures in the sources available here pair a July 28, 2026 company update with an October 6, 2026 market snapshot, so they provide context rather than a live quote or a buy-or-sell verdict.

What Sherwin-Williams sells—and why the segments matter

Sherwin-Williams develops, manufactures, distributes, and sells paint, coatings, and related products to professional, industrial, commercial, and retail customers. Its three reportable segments are Paint Stores Group, Consumer Brands Group, and Performance Coatings Group.

The company combines a company-operated store network with brands sold through third parties. Sherwin-Williams-branded products reach customers through more than 4,900 company-operated stores and facilities. Other brands are sold through mass merchandisers, home centers, independent paint dealers, hardware stores, automotive retailers, and industrial distributors. Performance Coatings serves construction, industrial, packaging, and transportation markets in more than 120 countries. These channels and end markets mean one demand trend cannot describe the whole company; evaluate segment sales and margins separately. What the latest operating figures say

The company’s fiscal 2025 ended December 31, 2025. Its year-end results, released January 29, 2026, and its July 28, 2026 second-quarter update give two different views: a completed fiscal year and a later quarterly snapshot with forward guidance.

Period and source Reported figures How to read them
Fiscal 2025, company year-end results released January 29, 2026 Net sales of $23.57 billion, up 2.1% year over year; diluted GAAP EPS of $10.26, down 2.7%; adjusted diluted EPS of $11.43, up 0.9%; net operating cash of $3.45 billion, or 14.6% of net sales; Paint Stores Group same-store sales growth of 1.7% for the year. GAAP and adjusted EPS tell different stories. Adjusted EPS excludes specified acquisition-related amortization and other adjustments; treat it as supplemental and compare it with GAAP earnings and cash generation.
Second quarter 2026, company update released July 28, 2026 Net sales of $6.79 billion, up 7.5%; diluted GAAP EPS of $3.43; adjusted diluted EPS of $3.70. Quarterly growth is not by itself proof of durable organic growth. Break out price, volume, mix, and acquired revenue where the company discloses them.

The 2025 year-end release and investor materials also described a 47th consecutive annual dividend increase. That record may matter to an income-oriented investor, but dividend history alone does not establish that the current share price is attractive.

How to interpret the analyst target and market snapshot

StockAnalysis.com showed an October 6, 2026 closing price of $321.16, market capitalization of $77.51 billion, trailing P/E of 29.63, forward P/E of 25.04, and an average analyst target of $387.18. The page labeled its analyst consensus “Buy.” These are date-specific figures from one third-party provider, not an independently verified current quote. Forward P/E depends on forecast earnings; an average target depends on which analysts the provider covers, the timing of their estimates, and how it aggregates them.

A target price compresses assumptions into one number. To assess it, ask what future earnings or cash flow it requires, what growth and margins support those results, and what valuation multiple is being applied. A target is neither a guaranteed future price nor a substitute for deciding whether those assumptions are plausible for your own time horizon and risk tolerance.

A practical framework for valuing SHW

1. Normalize earnings instead of choosing the most flattering EPS

Start with diluted GAAP EPS, then reconcile it to adjusted diluted EPS using the company’s reported adjustments. Consider whether acquisition amortization and restructuring are genuinely exceptional or recurring features of a business that uses acquisitions. Compare both measures with operating cash flow, capital spending, and free cash flow. A simple starting calculation is operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, but check the company’s cash-flow statement and the timing of working-capital movements before treating one year as a normal run rate.

2. Separate segment growth, pricing, and volume

Track Paint Stores, Consumer Brands, and Performance Coatings individually. For each, ask whether sales changes came from organic demand, price, product mix, acquisitions, or some combination—and whether operating margins moved with sales. Where the company does not disclose a component, do not assume it. Paint Stores same-store sales can inform the store channel, but it is not a measure of every segment’s performance.

3. Test the 2026 outlook against the demand signals

On July 28, 2026, management raised its full-year 2026 net-sales-growth expectation to the mid-to-high single digits and adjusted diluted EPS guidance to $11.80–$12.20. It also said leading indicators pointed to continued second-half demand softness. Treat that guidance as management’s outlook on that date, not as a realized result. In your model, test what happens if sales growth slows, and distinguish reported growth from underlying volume and price/mix rather than assuming the higher sales outlook means demand is uniformly strong.

4. Model input inflation and the timing of price increases

Management cited inflation in raw materials, energy, logistics, and packaging in the second-quarter update. It announced an 8% Paint Stores Group price increase effective September 1, 2026. That is a stated list-price action, not evidence that realized prices rose by the same amount or that margins automatically improved. Consider timing, customer response, mix, and whether weaker demand limits the company’s ability to offset costs. Stress gross and segment margins in a case where costs rise faster than realized pricing.

5. Check cash uses, financing, and per-share effects

Use the 10-K balance sheet and cash-flow statement to compare operating cash with capital expenditure, dividends, share repurchases, acquisitions, and debt service. Repurchases can increase EPS per share by reducing the share count, but do not by themselves show that the underlying business is growing or that a repurchase price was attractive. Acquisitions can add brands and markets while also bringing integration costs, amortization, and financing needs.

6. Build a bear, base, and bull range with explicit assumptions

Use at least two valuation lenses, such as normalized earnings and a cash-flow-based valuation. For an earnings-multiple approach, estimate sustainable diluted EPS and multiply it by an explicitly chosen P/E; for a cash-flow approach, forecast cash available to investors, discount it using an appropriate required return, and account for debt and shares. These are frameworks, not company-provided valuations.

Case Assumptions to vary Question to answer
Bear Slower sales growth, weaker volume, margin pressure from costs, lower acquisition contribution, higher financing costs, and a lower exit multiple. How much could value fall if demand softens and price increases fail to protect margins?
Base Moderate growth, margins that reflect the balance of pricing and input costs, and acquisition contributions supported by disclosed results. What value follows from assumptions you consider most defensible—not merely management’s or analysts’ most optimistic case?
Bull Stronger organic growth, resilient margins, effective cost recovery, and a higher justified exit multiple. What evidence would need to emerge for the more favorable assumptions to be credible?

Calculate the implied value per share in each case, then compare the range with the market price using the same valuation date. Vary growth, margins, interest expense, acquisition contributions, and terminal or exit multiples one at a time as well as together; this reveals which assumptions matter most. A matched peer comparison requires a consistently defined peer group, aligned fiscal periods, and comparable accounting and forecast definitions. A full-cycle SHW valuation history and a matched peer set are not established by the figures above, so do not fill those gaps with mismatched vendor ratios.

Risks that could change earnings or the multiple

Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 Form 10-K describes exposure to cyclical customer markets, macroeconomic conditions, inflation and interest rates, tariffs and trade-policy changes, raw-material availability and costs, supply-chain disruption, and foreign exchange. These can affect demand, operating costs, margins, cash flows, and the multiple investors assign to the shares. The second-quarter 2026 update specifically paired broad input-cost inflation with management’s expectation of softer demand indicators in the second half.

For a personal investment decision, also distinguish business risk from portfolio fit: a sound company can still be a poor purchase at a price that assumes too much, and a valuation range can still be wrong. Decide what loss you could tolerate, how concentrated you already are in individual stocks or housing-related businesses, and whether you need the money within the period your thesis requires.
