Compare a company’s revenue across several annual periods and the same quarter in successive years, then investigate what drove the changes. Check segment results, acquisitions, currency effects, reporting changes, revenue-recognition policies, margins, and cash flow before treating growth as meaningful. Revenue growth alone cannot tell you whether a stock is profitable, fairly valued, or suitable for you.
Start with a consistent revenue time series
Before deciding whether revenue is rising or falling, make sure you are comparing like periods. A company’s fiscal year may not match the calendar year, and its year-end may differ from another company’s. Use the fiscal periods named in the company’s filings rather than assuming that “2025” means the same 12 months for every issuer.

For each company, collect annual revenue for several years and the latest reported quarters. Three years of statements can show the recent direction; a longer history can help reveal whether a change is new or part of a longer pattern. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy’s September 2011 guide to reading a 10-K describes selected financial data for five years and detailed financial statement information for the past three years. Filing layouts and disclosure requirements can change, so check the company’s actual, latest filing rather than assuming a particular summary table will be present.

Use revenue from the income statement as your starting figure. Record the exact fiscal period and the label the company uses—such as “revenue” or “net revenue”—so that you do not accidentally combine figures with different definitions. A spreadsheet can make the comparisons easier to inspect:

For annual growth, calculate the change between adjacent fiscal years: (current-year revenue − prior-year revenue) ÷ prior-year revenue. For a quarterly year-over-year comparison, use the same calculation with the current quarter and the corresponding quarter of the prior year. State the periods alongside the result. A percentage without its period and base can conceal whether it describes one quarter, a full fiscal year, or a different interval.
Why matching quarters matters
Many businesses have seasonal patterns. Comparing one quarter with the immediately preceding quarter can mistake a normal seasonal rise or fall for a change in the business’s underlying direction. Comparing the same fiscal quarter year over year reduces that particular distortion, although it does not eliminate every issue: the company may have changed its fiscal calendar, acquired a business, or faced unusual conditions in one of the periods.
Use both annual and quarterly views. Annual figures provide a broader view of the company’s reported trend; the latest year-over-year quarter can show whether the recent direction differs from the full-year pattern. A single quarter should not be treated as proof of a lasting trend without examining the filing’s explanation and the surrounding periods.

A revenue figure tells you what the company reported, not why it changed. Read the discussion around it in the same filing. The SEC’s September 2011 investor bulletin says, “The ‘Business’ section is a good place to start to understand the company.” For trend analysis, the business description helps you understand what the company sells and how it organizes its operations; the financial statements and accompanying notes show the reported amounts and accounting details.
Management’s Discussion and Analysis
In Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), look for management’s explanation of material period-to-period changes, stated business drivers, trends, uncertainties, and accounting judgments. Note whether management attributes growth to factors such as customer volume, pricing, product or service mix, or an acquisition. Also look for explanations of declines or for factors that offset stronger results elsewhere.

Treat MD&A as management’s account, not independent verification. Check whether the explanation is consistent with the income statement, segment disclosures, and relevant notes. A stated driver is more useful when the filing gives enough detail to connect it to reported results; do not infer a precise contribution if the company has not disclosed one.
Financial statements, notes, and risks
Review the income statement for the total, then consult the notes for accounting policies, segment information, and other details that affect comparability. The filing’s risk discussion can also identify factors that could affect future revenue, though a risk disclosure is not a forecast that a particular outcome will occur. The SEC’s guide describes the 10-K as company-prepared and cautions that the SEC neither writes the filing nor vouches for its accuracy. A filing is a disclosure source to analyze, not an endorsement of the company or its results.
Find out which parts of the business are growing
Consolidated revenue can rise even while an important product, service, geography, or customer category weakens. Where the company reports segments or other useful breakdowns, compare them across the same periods as total revenue. Ask which units contributed most to the change, whether some areas offset others, and whether the company reorganized or changed how it reports those units.
Intuit’s FY2026 Form 10-K, filed September 9, 2026, illustrates how different segment trends can sit beneath a consolidated growth figure. The figures below are Intuit’s reported results, not targets or benchmarks for other companies.
| Intuit reported measure | Reported result | Period and context |
|---|---|---|
| Total net revenue | $16.285 billion | FY2024 |
| Total net revenue | $18.831 billion | FY2025; reported year-over-year increase of 16% |
| Total net revenue | $21.448 billion | FY2026; reported year-over-year increase of 14% |
| Global Business Solutions segment | 16% revenue growth | FY2026 |
| Online Ecosystem | 19% growth | FY2026 |
| Desktop Ecosystem | 6% growth | FY2026 |
In that filing, Intuit reported three years of total revenue and segment data, discussed online versus desktop ecosystem growth, and described drivers of changes. Its FY2026 results show why a total can be less informative than the breakdown: growth rates differed across the reported parts of the business. Those figures do not establish what growth rate is attractive for another issuer or whether Intuit’s stock is a good investment.

Use segment disclosures to understand composition, not to manufacture precision. Segment definitions may not map neatly to products a customer recognizes, and a company may not report every business line separately. If the company changes its segment presentation, earlier figures may be recast or may not be directly comparable; identify the change before drawing conclusions from a trend line.
Separate reported growth from changes in the business or its reporting
Revenue growth can reflect more than changes in demand for an unchanged business. Before describing a trend as durable or organic, check whether acquisitions, divestitures, currency translation, fiscal-period changes, discontinued operations, or presentation changes affected the comparison.
- Acquisitions and divestitures: An acquired business can add revenue to the current period that was not present in the earlier comparison period. A sale can remove revenue from a later period. Look for the company’s explanation of the effect; do not assume the total change came from the pre-existing business.
- Currency translation: For a company with business in more than one currency, translation into the reporting currency can affect reported results. Use the filing’s description of the impact if disclosed. Do not calculate or label a currency-adjusted result unless the company provides a defined basis for doing so.
- Fiscal-period changes: If a company changes its year-end or reporting period, check the lengths and dates of the periods being compared. A period that covers a different number of weeks or months is not automatically comparable with the prior one.
- Discontinued operations: Determine whether reported totals include or exclude operations that were sold or otherwise classified as discontinued, and use consistent figures where the filing provides them.
- Segment or accounting presentation changes: A reorganization can change which activities appear in each segment even when the underlying business has not changed in the same way. Read the company’s explanation and note whether it recast prior periods.
Do not call reported growth “organic” unless the company defines the adjustment and explains what it excludes. Companies can use different definitions for adjusted or constant-currency measures, so the label alone does not establish that two issuers’ figures are comparable.
Intuit’s FY2026 filing is a concrete example of why this check matters: it said some prior-period segment information was recast after reorganizing businesses and functions. A comparison using segment figures should account for that reporting change rather than assuming the segment series was presented identically throughout.
Inspect how and when revenue is recognized
Revenue recognition determines when a company records revenue and can depend on contract terms, delivery or service obligations, estimates, and other accounting judgments. Read the revenue-recognition policy and related notes in the issuer’s own filing, paying attention to the timing of recognition, material estimates, contract balances or obligations discussed, and any policy changes that could affect comparisons.

Teradata’s FY2025 filing describes the core principle in Accounting Standards Codification Topic 606: revenue depicts the transfer of promised goods or services for consideration the company expects to receive. Its policy also sets out the standard’s five-step model. That filing is an illustration of what a company may explain; its company-specific policy details should not be presumed to apply identically to every issuer. Use the accounting policy and notes of the company you are evaluating.
If a policy, estimate, or contract structure changes, consider whether it affects the timing or measurement of reported revenue. A change in reported revenue does not necessarily mean that customer demand changed by the same amount in the same period. The filing’s explanation is essential to judging what can and cannot be inferred.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare companies without assuming their revenue is directly equivalent
When comparing two or more stocks, align fiscal periods first, then compare the same dimensions for each issuer. Differences in business models, segment definitions, accounting policies, and disclosure detail can limit direct comparability. The aim is to identify meaningful similarities and differences, not to force every company into a single score.
| Comparison axis | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-year trend | Annual revenue over several fiscal years | Shows the direction across more than one reporting period. |
| Recent direction | Latest quarter versus the same fiscal quarter a year earlier | Helps avoid mistaking normal quarter-to-quarter seasonality for a trend. |
| Business mix | Reported segments, products, services, geographies, or customer categories | Shows whether total growth is broad-based or concentrated in particular units. |
| Stated drivers | Management’s explanation of pricing, volume, mix, or other disclosed factors | Connects the reported change to the company’s account of what changed. |
| Comparability | Acquisitions, divestitures, currency, fiscal periods, discontinued operations, and presentation changes | Identifies changes that can make reported periods less like-for-like. |
| Accounting | Revenue-recognition policies, timing, estimates, and material changes | Helps explain when and how the issuer records sales. |
| Financial context | Margins, operating income, and cash flows | Shows whether revenue growth accompanies profitability and cash generation. |
A faster reported growth rate is not automatically better. One company may be expanding quickly from a smaller base; another may be growing more slowly with different margins, cash generation, or business risks. The available evidence does not establish a universal “good” revenue-growth percentage or a single named statistic that can judge an investment on its own.

Revenue is the top line, not the bottom line. Compare the direction of revenue with gross or operating margins, operating income, and cash flows. Faster sales growth can coexist with weaker profitability or cash generation, so a rising revenue series does not by itself demonstrate that the company is becoming more financially productive.

Look at the relevant statements over matching periods and examine the notes where necessary to understand changes. If revenue increases while operating income or cash flow weakens, investigate the company’s explanation rather than assuming the divergence is temporary or harmless. Conversely, a lower growth rate alone does not establish that a company’s business is deteriorating. Interpret the combination of figures in light of the issuer’s business model and the disclosed drivers.
A practical filing-by-filing workflow
- Open the latest annual filing. Confirm the issuer, filing date, fiscal year-end, and period covered. Use the income statement to record revenue for each annual period shown.
- Add the latest quarterly filing. Record the quarter’s revenue and the corresponding fiscal quarter from the prior year. Keep the fiscal dates visible so you do not compare mismatched periods.
- Calculate and label changes. Calculate annual growth between adjacent fiscal years and year-over-year growth for the latest quarter. Label each result with the exact periods used; do not present a growth percentage without its base period.
- Read the MD&A explanation. Note the company’s stated causes of material increases or decreases, along with trends, uncertainties, and judgments relevant to the revenue line.
- Break out reported components. Compare segments or other disclosed categories with consolidated revenue. Identify faster- and slower-growing areas and any offsets the company describes.
- Check comparability adjustments. Search the filing for discussion of acquisitions, divestitures, currencies, changes in reporting periods, discontinued operations, and recast or reorganized segments. Record only adjustments the company defines and supports.
- Read revenue-recognition notes. Review how the issuer recognizes revenue, what estimates or contract terms matter, and whether the filing describes a material policy or presentation change.
- Check financial context. Compare the trend with margins, operating income, and cash flows. Investigate divergence rather than treating revenue growth as a complete measure of performance.
- Repeat the same process for each company. Align fiscal periods and use the same comparison axes, while noting that different business models and disclosures may prevent a direct one-to-one comparison.
For current figures, use the issuer’s actual latest filings. A previously published summary, an older annual report, or a comparison built around an outdated segment structure can miss changes in the company’s current disclosures.
What a revenue comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A disciplined comparison can show whether reported revenue has risen or fallen across multiple periods, which reported business units contributed to the change, what management says drove it, and whether known changes make the figures less comparable. It can also identify questions to investigate in the notes and financial statements.
It cannot, by itself, establish that growth will continue, that reported growth is organic, that a company is profitable or generating cash, or that its shares are appropriately valued. Revenue analysis is one part of investment research. A decision about a stock also depends on evidence beyond the top line, including the company’s financial condition, risks, and the price of its shares.
