To block online purchases or international transactions on a credit card, open your card issuer’s app or online banking and look for Card Controls, Manage Card or Transaction Controls. If available, turn off online or e-commerce transactions and international or cross-border transactions separately. These controls are issuer-specific, so contact your issuer through its official support channel if you cannot find them.
Online and international controls block different things
An online purchase and an international transaction are not the same category. One describes how a payment is made; the other describes its relationship to the countries associated with the merchant and the card issuer. A transaction can meet one definition, both, or neither. If you want to restrict both, look for both controls rather than assuming that one covers the other.

Online or e-commerce transactions
Visa describes e-commerce controls as applying to card-not-present transactions made through e-commerce or mail-order/telephone-order merchants. In practical terms, a card-not-present payment is one where the physical card is not presented to the merchant in the way it typically is for an in-person purchase. The exact transactions affected by an issuer’s setting depend on that issuer’s definitions and implementation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInternational or cross-border transactions
Visa describes cross-border controls in terms of the merchant’s country and the card issuer’s country differing in specified contexts. That is not necessarily the same as the cardholder being physically abroad. Visa’s overseas-spend use case describes a cardholder blocking transactions outside their home country and, in the example, allowing purchases in a selected country. Whether your issuer offers that country-specific option is a separate question.

What the distinction means for your settings
Look for controls by channel (online, point of sale or ATM), geography (domestic, international or selected countries), and scope (a transaction category or the whole card). An online block may not prevent an in-person purchase abroad, and an international block may not stop an online purchase from a merchant in your issuer’s country. Read the explanation shown for each control before changing it.
It can help to think through a few possible combinations. An online order from a merchant in the card issuer’s country may be online without being cross-border under the issuer’s definition. An in-person purchase from a merchant outside that country may be cross-border without being an e-commerce transaction. An online purchase from a foreign merchant could potentially fit both categories. These are ways to understand the two dimensions, not guarantees about how a particular issuer classifies a payment. If a transaction matters, ask the issuer how it applies its settings to that merchant and payment type.
Your physical location is another separate detail. A cardholder can be at home and make an online purchase from a merchant abroad; a cardholder can also travel and make a purchase that the issuer does not classify as cross-border. Visa’s documentation describes controls using transaction and country criteria, while issuer implementations determine how those criteria are presented to customers. Do not rely on the word “overseas” alone to predict what will be blocked.
How to turn off online or international transactions
The card issuer provides the setting; there is no universal cardholder switch that works across all banks. Visa describes transaction controls as features an issuer chooses to make available through its app or online banking. Menu names, eligible cards and supported controls differ, so the following is a general route rather than a guaranteed menu path.
- Open your issuer’s official app or online banking. Sign in using the channel you normally use for your credit-card account. If you are unsure whether an app or website is genuine, use the contact or access details provided by your issuer rather than following an unsolicited message.
- Select the credit card you want to manage. Make sure you are viewing the correct card, especially if your account includes more than one card or cardholder.
- Find the card-control area. Look for a label such as Card Controls, Manage Card or Transaction Controls. The label may differ or the option may not be available for your card.
- Review the available transaction categories. Look separately for online/e-commerce and international/cross-border controls. Some issuers also show domestic usage, contactless, point-of-sale or ATM controls, spending limits, or alerts.
- Turn off only the category you intend to restrict. Read the issuer’s on-screen definition and any warning before confirming. If you want to block both online and international use, check whether the issuer provides two separate settings and change each one as needed.
- Confirm the setting in the issuer’s interface. Follow any confirmation prompt and check the displayed status. Do not assume the change has taken effect merely because you tapped a control; the issuer’s confirmation is the available indication in its service.
- Keep a note of what you changed. Record the affected card and category so you can restore only the needed access later. If the interface is unclear, ask the issuer what the setting covers before relying on it.
Visa says issuers may offer blocks as well as alerts, and may allow an internet-transaction block to apply to all internet transactions or only those above a purchase amount. A limit or alert is not necessarily the same thing as a block. Check the setting’s description to distinguish them.
If you see several controls, compare what each one changes before selecting anything. A channel setting may be limited to online purchases, while another may control point-of-sale or ATM use. A geographic setting may distinguish domestic and international transactions or, where the issuer supports it, allow country selection. A card-level on/off setting is broader in intended scope than a single-category switch. Availability of each option depends on the issuer and card.

Do not interpret the absence of a control as proof that a transaction type cannot be restricted in any way. It may mean your issuer does not offer that particular self-service option for your card, or that the relevant setting is elsewhere in its service. Ask the issuer whether the feature is available and what alternative controls it provides. Visa’s description is of capabilities issuers can select, not a universal interface or entitlement for every cardholder.
What issuer examples show—and what they do not
Published issuer examples show that these controls exist for some cards, but they do not establish a common procedure for every bank or country. Use your issuer’s current guidance for your own account rather than copying another bank’s menu path.
| Issuer example | What its published guidance describes | How to use the example |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Bank (India) | Eligible credit-card customers can enable or disable online, contactless and international functionality, and adjust limits using Fedmobile. | This is an example of available controls for eligible customers, not a guarantee of eligibility or identical settings on other cards. |
| ICICI Bank (India) | Its FAQ describes setting spend limits, enabling or disabling domestic or international transactions, and controlling online, point-of-sale or ATM channels through iMobile Pay. It describes temporary locking separately through net banking or iMobile. | Check the bank’s current app and instructions for the exact labels and options applicable to your card. |
| HDFC Bank (India) | Its guidance describes controls for online, contactless and international card usage through its card-control channels. | Use the bank’s current official instructions for the steps; the broad description does not establish one menu path for every customer. |
The examples are specific to named issuers in India. They are not a directory of all banks, and they do not establish what a card issued elsewhere offers.
For example, Federal Bank’s description groups online, contactless and international functionality among options eligible customers can manage in Fedmobile, alongside limits. ICICI’s description covers several channels, including online, point of sale and ATM, and separates a temporary card lock from those channel and international controls. HDFC’s guidance also describes online, contactless and international usage controls. These examples are useful for showing the range of issuer-provided controls, but they are not interchangeable instructions. A customer should follow the current steps and eligibility details published by their own issuer.
When a temporary card lock may be the better choice
If you want to stop all use of a card temporarily, check whether your issuer offers a card-wide lock. Visa lists a global card-level on/off control separately from e-commerce and cross-border controls. ICICI Bank likewise describes temporary locking separately from controls for transaction channels and international use.

A card-wide lock has a broader intended scope than switching off just online or international transactions. Choose a category control when you want other uses of the card to remain available; consider the broader lock when you want the card itself temporarily switched off. The issuer’s description governs what each control actually does. Do not assume a lock will handle every transaction type or timing scenario identically.

The choice depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you want to keep in-person purchases in your home country available but stop e-commerce use, a channel-specific control is more targeted if your issuer offers it. If you want to keep online payments available but restrict transactions classified as cross-border, the geography control is the relevant one to investigate. If you want to suspend use of the card rather than one category, ask about the card-wide lock. Compare the issuer’s descriptions before acting; the name of a control does not establish every transaction it affects.
Visa’s documentation separates global on/off, e-commerce, and cross-border controls as different potential features. That distinction is a useful comparison framework, but it does not establish which features your bank has activated or how it treats every edge case. ICICI’s materials similarly describe temporary locking separately from changing channel or international usage. In either case, consult the current issuer instructions for the card in question.
If a legitimate payment is declined
A declined payment after changing a setting does not, by itself, tell you which control caused it. Check the relevant setting and the issuer’s explanation before changing anything. The reviewed issuer and network materials do not establish one universal way every issuer processes a transaction after a control is changed.
- Identify the transaction type. Was it an online/card-not-present purchase, an in-person payment, or a transaction involving a merchant outside your issuer’s country? This helps you identify which control may be relevant, but the issuer’s definitions take precedence.
- Review the card’s current controls. In the issuer’s app or online banking, check whether the applicable category is disabled and whether a broader card lock is on. Avoid enabling unrelated categories as a first response.
- Read the issuer’s guidance for that control. Check whether it describes the transaction category, any limit, or any geographic exception you need. Do not infer that a control covers recurring, wallet-based, offline-authorized or already-authorized transactions unless your issuer says so.
- Restore only the access needed for the payment. If the issuer’s instructions support it, enable the relevant category or adjust the relevant control, then follow its confirmation process. The available sources do not establish how quickly every issuer applies changes, so do not rely on an assumed timing.
- Contact the issuer if the payment still fails or the setting is unclear. Use the support channel in official banking materials and ask which control applies to the transaction and how to change it. Avoid repeatedly changing several controls without knowing which one matters.
Before trying the payment again, check whether the issuer describes an alert, a spending limit, or a block as the active setting. An alert may notify you without stopping a transaction, and a limit may affect only transactions covered by that limit. Visa’s Getting Started documentation gives the example that an issuer might let cardholders block all internet transactions or only internet transactions above a specified purchase amount. If your issuer offers a threshold, read whether it applies to all transactions in the category or only those meeting its stated condition.
If the card control appears enabled but the payment is still declined, do not assume that switching several settings on will solve it. Ask the issuer which control, if any, applies to the transaction and whether the current setting is active for that card. The documents cited here do not establish a standard processing delay or a universal result when a setting is changed. Follow the issuer’s confirmation and support guidance rather than relying on a presumed activation time.
Limits to keep in mind before relying on a block
- Availability varies. Visa says issuers select which transaction-control features they provide. A feature shown for one issuer or card may not exist for another.
- Labels are not definitions. A setting called “international” or “online” may be described differently by different issuers. Read the issuer’s explanation rather than assuming that everyday wording covers every transaction you have in mind.
- A block is not always a full-card lock. Channel and geographic controls are distinct from a card-level on/off control in Visa’s documentation. Check which scope you are changing.
- Some transaction behaviors are not established across issuers. Do not assume a card-wide lock or a category block necessarily stops every tokenized wallet payment, recurring transaction, offline authorization or transaction already authorized. Ask your issuer about the specific card and payment type.
- Do not assume country exceptions are universal. Visa describes a capability to allow purchases in a selected country in an example; this does not establish that every issuer offers country selection.
- Alerts and limits serve different purposes from blocks. An alert can notify you, and a limit can constrain eligible transactions, but neither should be treated as a block unless the issuer explicitly describes it that way.
These limits matter because a card control is not a universal guarantee against every transaction someone might describe as online or overseas. A recurring charge, a payment through a digital wallet, an offline authorization, or a transaction authorized before a setting changed may be handled differently depending on the issuer. The cited issuer and Visa descriptions do not establish a common rule for those cases. If one of them is the reason you want a restriction, ask specifically about that payment type instead of relying on a general category label.

Also distinguish the control you can see in the app from the network-level capability it may use. Visa describes transaction-control functions that issuers can choose to surface through a mobile app or online banking site. Visa’s statement that an issuer may offer an internet block for all internet transactions, or only those over a purchase amount, is an example of possible configuration—not a promise that every issuer has that feature or threshold.
Questions to ask your issuer
If you cannot find a setting or need confidence about a particular payment, ask your issuer these focused questions:
- Does this card support separate online/e-commerce and international/cross-border controls?
- How does the issuer define each category, including the merchant-country rule for an international transaction?
- Does the setting block transactions, set a limit, or send an alert?
- Does the issuer offer selected-country exceptions, and do they apply to this card?
- How does the control apply to recurring payments, digital wallets, offline authorizations or transactions already authorized?
- How can you confirm the setting is active, and how should you restore access for a legitimate payment?
These questions matter because Visa documents a range of possible issuer-selected features, not one standard package that every cardholder receives.
When speaking with support, describe the goal and the transaction rather than asking only for an “international block.” For instance, explain whether you want to prevent online purchases, transactions from merchants in other countries, or all use of the card for a period. If you are concerned about a recurring charge or wallet payment, name that specifically. Ask the representative to distinguish a block from a spending limit or alert, explain any country-selection option, and confirm the scope for your card. This can help avoid turning off a broader category than you intended.
There is no physical accessory that changes the issuer’s authorization setting for online or cross-border payments on an existing card. The practical route is the issuer’s own card controls or support service. Use official issuer channels, and do not buy a wallet, sleeve or generic security product expecting it to implement an account-level transaction block.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I block online purchases on my credit card?
Possibly. Open your issuer’s app or online banking and look for Card Controls, Manage Card or Transaction Controls. If your card supports it, turn off the online or e-commerce category and read the issuer’s definition of what it covers. Not every issuer offers the same control.

Can I block overseas or international transactions?
Some issuers offer an international or cross-border control. Check the card’s settings and the issuer’s definition, which may be based on the merchant’s country and the issuer’s country rather than simply where you are physically located.
Does blocking international transactions also block online purchases?
Not necessarily. Online describes the payment channel, while international or cross-border describes a geographic relationship. A payment could fit either category or potentially both. Check whether your issuer offers and requires separate controls.
Can I allow transactions in one country while blocking others?
Visa describes selected-country controls as a capability issuers may provide, but that does not mean every issuer or card offers country exceptions. Ask your issuer whether the option applies to your card.

Should I use a temporary card lock instead?
A card-wide lock is intended to have broader scope than switching off one transaction category. If you want to stop card use generally for a time, check whether your issuer offers a lock and what its description says. Visa and ICICI describe locking separately from channel and international controls.
Will a block stop recurring charges or digital-wallet payments?
Do not assume it will. The cited issuer and Visa descriptions do not establish how every issuer handles recurring payments, tokenized wallet transactions, offline authorizations or payments already authorized. Ask your issuer about the specific card and transaction.
What if a legitimate payment is declined after I change a setting?
Check the current control status and identify whether the payment was online, cross-border or another transaction type. Restore only the relevant access if the issuer’s instructions support it. If the cause or activation timing is unclear, contact the issuer through an official support channel.
Is there a product I can buy to block these transactions?
The relevant controls are issuer-provided account settings. A physical wallet or card sleeve does not implement an issuer-side authorization block on an existing credit card; use your issuer’s app, online banking or support service.

To restrict online and international credit-card use, check your issuer’s app or online banking for separate e-commerce and cross-border controls. Read the definitions, confirm which card and categories are affected, and use a card-wide lock only if you want broader suspension. Because availability and transaction handling vary by issuer, contact the issuer through its official channel when the setting is missing or a specific payment type matters.
