Cash back is usually the simpler choice for holiday shopping; travel rewards can be better if you will use the specific travel redemption and its value to you exceeds the cash you could earn. The right comparison is not the card’s headline reward rate. It is what the card earns on the purchases you expect to make, after caps and exclusions, minus fees and any interest, compared with what you can realistically redeem.
Start with the kind of rewards you will actually use
Cash back, flexible points and co-branded miles are different currencies. Cash back generally has a clear dollar equivalent. Points and miles may have several redemption options, with different values and restrictions. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that point values vary by redemption option; major issuers typically estimate them at about one cent apiece, but that general estimate is not a guaranteed value for a particular program or redemption. The CFPB’s 2024 issue spotlight is a useful reminder to assess points by what you can actually redeem, not by a universal conversion rate.

For a holiday purchase, compare the value you can use—not the biggest number printed in an offer. A cash reward that can offset an expense has a straightforward benefit. A travel reward has value to you only if the program lets you redeem it for travel you want, at a cost and on dates that work. If you would not take the trip, cannot use the available redemption, or would have to spend more to make a redemption worthwhile, the advertised points balance may be less useful than a smaller cash-equivalent reward.

Compare the rewards on your actual holiday spending
Make a short list of the purchases you expect to put on a card: for example, gifts, groceries, dining, travel bookings or purchases from a particular retailer. Then check how the specific card treats each merchant and purchase type. A card’s headline rate may apply only to eligible purchases in selected categories. A purchase that feels like “holiday shopping” to you may not qualify for the category or merchant treatment you assumed.
Issuer programs are card- and offer-specific. The categories, rates and redemption options on one card cannot be assumed to apply to another, even within the same issuer. Chase’s cash-back-versus-points explanation illustrates that the trade-offs depend on the particular card and rewards program; it does not establish a universal rate or value for every card.
Read the earning rules, not only the headline
Before choosing, inspect the current terms for the exact offer. In particular, look for:
- Eligible categories and merchants: Identify which of your planned purchases qualify and whether the terms define eligibility narrowly.
- Spending caps: Find out whether a higher rate applies only up to a specified amount, and what rate applies after that limit.
- Activation requirements: Check whether you must activate a category or offer before purchases qualify and note any stated deadline.
- Exclusions: Look for purchase types or transactions that do not earn rewards under the offer’s terms.
- Offer conditions: Confirm the dates and other conditions that apply to the particular promotion rather than assuming a seasonal offer is automatic.
These details can change the result. A card that looks generous on a broad category may earn less on your actual checkout transactions if a cap is reached, a purchase is excluded or an activation step is missed. Do not treat a merchant’s description of a purchase, a card’s marketing language and the issuer’s eligibility rules as interchangeable.

Use a like-for-like comparison
Write down the rewards you expect to earn from the purchases you plan to make, using each card’s current terms. For cash back, use the amount the program says the eligible spending earns. For points or miles, first determine whether you have a redemption you would genuinely use; then compare its actual stated cost with the cash price of that travel. If a program does not make the value clear until you choose a redemption, do not substitute a general cents-per-point estimate as if it were guaranteed.
A simple comparison is: usable reward value on planned purchases − card costs − expected interest. This is a decision framework, not a promise that every reward can be converted into cash or travel at a particular rate. If fees or interest cannot be estimated confidently, treat them as unresolved costs rather than assuming the reward will cover them.
How cash back and travel rewards differ
| Decision factor | Cash-back card | Travel-rewards card |
|---|---|---|
| What you earn | A cash-equivalent reward, subject to the card’s earning rules and terms. | Points or miles whose value depends on the program and redemption option. |
| How to judge value | Compare the reward amount with the eligible spending that earns it. | Compare a redemption you will actually make with its cash cost; do not assume one fixed value per point or mile. |
| Best fit | You prefer a clear, flexible reward and have no specific travel redemption in mind. | You expect to use the program’s travel redemptions and can realize value that exceeds the cash alternative. |
| What to verify | Categories, caps, activation, exclusions, redemption rules and fees. | Those same earning terms, plus the available travel redemption, restrictions, redemption terms and any relevant fees. |
| Main uncertainty | The specific offer may limit which purchases earn the stated reward or how and when it can be redeemed. | The number of points earned does not, by itself, establish what travel they will buy or whether the redemption suits you. |
The table is a general comparison, not a ranking of current cards. No single cash-back rate, travel-point value, annual fee or holiday offer applies across the market. Check the issuer’s current terms for the card you are considering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen cash back is likely to be the better fit
Cash back is a strong default when you want a reward with a direct cash-equivalent reference and do not have a travel redemption in mind. It may also be the easier option to evaluate if your holiday spending is spread across different merchants or if you do not want to work through program-specific travel terms. That simplicity does not mean every cash-back card earns well on every purchase: categories, caps and exclusions still matter.

Cash back can also make the comparison clearer when you are deciding whether a card’s reward is worth an annual fee. Estimate the reward on your expected eligible spending under the card’s terms, then account for the fee and other costs. If the result depends on spending more than you planned or on a category that may not qualify, do not count that projected reward as certain.
Cash back is not automatically the best choice
A cash-equivalent reward can still be outweighed by costs, or by a travel redemption that is genuinely more valuable to a particular cardholder. A card with a prominent cash-back headline may also be a poor fit if your purchases do not qualify for that rate, you reach a cap early, or the reward’s redemption rules do not suit you. Compare actual terms rather than using “cash back” as a guarantee of simplicity in every detail.
When travel rewards may be worth choosing
Travel rewards can make sense if you already expect to travel and can identify a redemption you will use. Estimate the value by looking at the program’s available redemption for your intended trip and comparing it with the cash price of that travel. Then compare that result with the cash reward you would earn on the same purchases. The CFPB’s finding that point values vary by redemption is why a general point estimate should not replace this comparison.
Consider whether the redemption is practical, not merely possible. A points balance that cannot be used for the trip you want, or that requires a redemption you would not otherwise choose, should not be valued as though it were equivalent to cash. Include any applicable restrictions and costs when judging the value. The program’s current terms—not the abstract number of points—determine what you can redeem.

Do not value points as cash unless the terms support it
Some programs offer multiple ways to use rewards, but the value can differ by option. A travel redemption may suit one cardholder while another available option is more relevant to someone else. If the issuer or program gives a value estimate, read what redemption it applies to and whether it is a general estimate or a specific offer. The CFPB’s approximate one-cent description for issuer estimates is context, not a universal floor, fixed exchange rate or promise that a point can be cashed out for one cent.

Rewards are only one part of a card’s cost. Check the annual fee and any other fees relevant to your use, and compare them with the value you expect to redeem. A reward calculation that ignores a fee can make a card look more valuable than it is for your spending. Do not assume that holiday purchases will earn enough to offset an annual fee; the result depends on eligible spending, the card’s terms and whether you would use the rewards.
More importantly, consider whether you can pay the statement balance in full. The CFPB said in May 2024 that “Consumers who carry revolving balances often pay far more in interest and fees than they get back on rewards.” That is the agency’s general statement, not a calculation of any one cardholder’s costs, but it captures the priority: if you expect to carry a balance, estimate the borrowing cost before considering rewards. A reward is not a discount if interest and fees exceed its value.
If you cannot confidently pay for the holiday spending by the due date, compare the card’s cost and your repayment plan—not just the rewards. Do not make extra purchases or choose a card with a fee solely to earn a bonus. A points balance or cash reward cannot make borrowing cost-free.

Be careful with store-card offers at checkout
A checkout discount or special reward can make a retail card seem attractive during the holiday season. The CFPB notes that retail-card originations tend to be seasonal, peaking in November and December as retail sales and promotions rise. That is a reason to pause and read the offer, not proof that every store card is a bad choice.
In a survey sample reported on the CFPB’s retail-card action page, more than 80 percent of retail cards were issued by four large banks. In that same cited sample, 90 percent of retail cards had a maximum APR above 30 percent, compared with 38 percent of non-retail general-purpose cards. These are sample-level comparisons reported by the CFPB, not current quotes for any particular offer or claims about every retail card. The page’s publication date is not established here, so the statistics should not be read as a current market-wide rate comparison.
Before accepting a card in a checkout line, check the exact offer’s APR, fees, discount conditions and rewards agreement. Find out whether the discount applies immediately, what purchases qualify, and what happens if you return an item or fail to meet an offer condition. Compare the card with your existing options after accounting for any cost of borrowing. A one-time discount should not substitute for understanding the card you would be opening.

Rewards terms can change what you earn or keep
Read the current rewards agreement, including conditions for earning, redemption and forfeiture, and keep records of rewards you earn. The CFPB’s 2024 Circular 2024-07 explains that rewards-program conduct can raise consumer-protection concerns in a variety of circumstances, including conduct involving a merchant partner and conduct that may be consistent with program terms. The circular is an agency statement about potential legal issues, not a guarantee that a particular program will change or that a particular cardholder will lose rewards. Read the CFPB circular for its explanation.
For a holiday decision, the practical point is to avoid relying on an assumed future value or an unverified promise. Check the program’s current rules, save the offer and terms that apply when you sign up, and track the rewards credited to your account. If a reward is missing, or the issuer’s displayed balance does not match what you expected, compare your transaction and offer records with the terms and contact the issuer through its official support channel.
A practical decision process before you apply
- List planned purchases. Estimate the amount you expect to spend and identify the merchants and purchase types, rather than relying on a broad “holiday shopping” label.
- Check each card’s current earning terms. Verify eligible categories, caps, activation deadlines, exclusions and offer dates for the specific card and offer.
- Estimate the usable reward. For cash back, use the stated cash-equivalent earning under the terms. For points or miles, identify a redemption you would actually use and compare its value with the cash alternative.
- Subtract costs. Account for annual and other relevant fees. If you may carry a balance, put expected interest and fees ahead of reward value in the decision.
- Read redemption and account terms. Check how rewards can be redeemed, any conditions that could affect earning or forfeiture, and keep a copy of the offer details.
- Choose only if the card fits your spending and repayment plan. Do not apply solely to capture a holiday promotion or welcome offer if the ongoing terms do not make sense for you.
This process does not require predicting every purchase perfectly. It does require using realistic spending and a redemption you would actually make, rather than treating a promotional headline as your expected return.
Bottom line: the better card is the one whose rewards you can use
For a shopper who wants a transparent cash-equivalent return and has no specific trip in mind, cash back is often easier to assess. For someone with a realistic travel redemption and the ability to get more value from it than from cash back, travel rewards may be the better fit. In either case, the exact card’s purchase eligibility, caps, redemption rules and fees matter more than the category label. If you expect to carry a balance, prioritize the cost of borrowing over rewards.
