A higher P/E than either benchmark is a reason to investigate—not proof that the stock is overvalued.
What a valuation comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A valuation multiple relates a company’s share price or market value to a financial measure such as earnings. The price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E, is a common starting point: it compares a share price with earnings per share. A stock with a higher P/E than its industry reference or the S&P 500 is priced more highly relative to the earnings measure being used. That describes a relative difference; it does not establish what the stock is worth.

The comparison is useful because it gives the number context. An industry benchmark helps you assess a company against businesses with more similar activities, while the S&P 500 provides a broad large-cap U.S. market reference. Neither benchmark is a valuation verdict. A company may merit a different multiple because its growth prospects, profitability, or earnings reliability differ from those of the comparison group. Conversely, a low multiple may reflect weak or uncertain earnings rather than a bargain.

Start with P/E only when earnings are meaningful. Conventional P/E is not useful for a company with negative earnings: a negative ratio cannot be read as a straightforward discount or compared as if it were a normal positive multiple. In that case, investigate whether another valuation measure is appropriate to the business, and explain the limits of that alternative rather than forcing a P/E comparison.

Choose one earnings basis before comparing
Trailing P/E uses reported past earnings
Trailing P/E compares the current share price with earnings from a past reporting period, commonly the most recent 12 months. It is anchored in reported results, but those results may not represent the company’s future earning power. A temporary profit surge, a loss, or a major change in the business can make the trailing figure unusually high, low, or unusable.
Forward P/E uses estimated future earnings
Forward P/E compares the current share price with forecast earnings. It therefore depends on estimates, which can change and may not match eventual results. The Federal Reserve’s S&P 500 forward P/E measure uses expected earnings for the next 12 months. When using a forward figure for a stock, industry, or index, check the forecast horizon and the source of estimates; do not assume every provider calculates it on the same basis.
Do not compare a stock’s trailing P/E with an industry or index forward P/E as if the values were directly equivalent. If the available data forces that mismatch, label it plainly and treat the result as a rough, limited comparison, not a clean ranking. The more reliable approach is to put all three figures on the same basis—trailing or forward—and to document the period each one covers.

Use the industry as the closer comparison
Choose an industry classification that reflects what the company actually does, not simply the broad label that sounds closest. Companies grouped in one industry can still differ in products, customers, operating models, profitability, or exposure to economic conditions. If the company has several substantial lines of business, a single industry multiple may be an imperfect reference; say so rather than presenting the peer group as exact.
Use a published industry statistic consistently and find out how it was constructed. An industry figure might be a median, an average, or an aggregate; those calculations can produce different results. It also matters whether and how firms with losses are included. For instance, a conventional P/E cannot be meaningfully calculated for a loss-making company, so the choice to exclude such firms or handle them another way can change the reported industry comparison.
Aswath Damodaran’s NYU Stern U.S. industry dataset, labeled as using data as of January 2026, illustrates why a single industry number needs context. It presents firm counts, the percentage of firms with negative earnings, current/trailing/forward P/E measures, expected five-year growth, and PEG by industry. These are separate pieces of dataset context, not one universal market multiple. The dataset’s date also matters: its January 2026 figures should not be described as current indefinitely, because prices, estimates, and industry composition can change.

Use the S&P 500 as a broad-market reference
The S&P 500 is a large-cap U.S. equity benchmark comprising 500 constituent companies, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices’ methodology description retrieved in 2026. It is useful for asking how a stock’s valuation compares with a broad market reference, but it is not a direct peer group for every company. An individual stock may operate in a very different industry or have a different earnings profile from the index’s constituents.

Its aggregate characteristics therefore do not describe a typical company in equal measure. When you compare one stock with an S&P 500 multiple, frame the result as a comparison with the index—not as a comparison with a representative company that necessarily resembles the stock.
Use the industry and index references to answer different questions. The industry figure is usually the more relevant starting point for relative business context. The S&P 500 figure can show how the stock’s multiple sits against the broad large-cap market. A stock can be above one benchmark and below the other without contradiction: the reference groups differ in membership and purpose.

Build a comparison that can be checked
Before drawing a conclusion, put the stock, industry, and index figures side by side with their definitions. Record the information for each figure separately; a comparison is only as clear as its least transparent input.
| What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Valuation measure | Confirms whether all values are P/E or another multiple, rather than mixing unlike measures. |
| Earnings basis and period | Shows whether P/E is trailing or forward and, for forward P/E, what forecast horizon is used. |
| “As of” date | Prices and estimates change. A value calculated on one date may not be comparable with a value from another. |
| Source | Identifies where the price, earnings, estimates, and benchmark statistic came from. |
| Industry construction | States whether the statistic is a median, average, or aggregate and how firms with losses are treated. |
| Industry classification | Makes clear which peer group the company is being compared with and whether it fits the business. |
| Profitability and growth context | Helps explain why a multiple may differ and whether earnings are meaningful and dependable. |
There is no definition-free “industry P/E.” If two reputable sources provide different industry values, first check whether they use different dates, classifications, earnings horizons, statistic types, or rules for loss-making firms. Do not average the numbers just to make them agree. Select the measure that best matches your comparison, explain the choice, and keep the alternative in view if the construction difference is material.

If the stock’s P/E is higher
A higher multiple means investors are paying more for each unit of the earnings measure used in the calculation. It may be consistent with higher expected growth, but the comparison alone cannot establish that growth will occur or justify the premium. Check whether the company’s expected growth and earnings reliability are meaningfully different from those of the industry or index. Also confirm that the gap survives a like-for-like comparison using the same trailing or forward basis and a compatible date.

For a forward comparison in particular, estimates can lag a fast-moving share price. The Federal Reserve’s April 2025 Financial Stability Report observed of S&P 500 forward valuation: “Despite the recent decline, prices remained high relative to analysts’ earnings forecast, which update more slowly than market prices.” The point is not that every high P/E is wrong; it is that the price and its earnings denominator may update at different speeds. Treat an estimate-based multiple as a dated snapshot, not a fixed fact.
If the stock’s P/E is lower
A lower multiple can reflect weaker expected growth, less reliable earnings, or other differences in the business; it does not by itself show that the stock is cheap. Check whether reported earnings are unusually strong, whether future estimates are lower than trailing results, and whether the business resembles the companies in the benchmark. If an industry figure excludes loss-making firms while the stock’s profitability is deteriorating, the comparison may be especially misleading.
If the stock is close to a benchmark
A similar multiple does not mean the stock has the same risk, growth outlook, or earnings quality as the benchmark. It only says that the selected price-to-earnings relationship is similar on the stated basis. The business context still matters, and the apparent similarity may disappear if dates, forecast horizons, or industry construction do not line up.

A practical workflow for an individual stock
- Confirm the company and its earnings status. Identify the business and check whether it has positive earnings. If earnings are negative, do not interpret conventional P/E as a normal valuation signal.
- Select the P/E basis. Decide whether the question concerns reported past earnings (trailing P/E) or expected earnings (forward P/E). Use that same basis for the stock, industry, and index wherever possible.
- Choose a relevant industry reference. Find the company’s industry classification and a published statistic suited to it. Note the statistic’s construction and whether firms with losses are included, excluded, or otherwise handled.
- Collect the broad-market figure. Use an S&P 500 measure with the same earnings basis as the stock and industry values. Keep in mind that the index is a market-cap-weighted large-cap benchmark, not a stock-specific peer set.
- Align dates and definitions. Record the “as of” date, earnings period or forecast horizon, and source for each figure. If an input is not aligned, either replace it or explicitly qualify the comparison.
- Explain the difference. State whether the stock’s multiple is above or below each reference, then examine profitability, growth expectations, earnings reliability, and business similarity for reasons that could account for the gap.
- Limit the conclusion to what the comparison supports. Describe relative valuation as a clue for further analysis, not proof that a stock is overvalued or undervalued.
Common comparison mistakes
- Mixing trailing and forward P/E: the denominators represent different earnings periods, so a simple comparison can mislead.
- Ignoring dates: prices and estimates can move at different speeds, leaving a multiple stale or internally inconsistent.
- Treating an industry value as self-explanatory: median, average, and aggregate measures—and the treatment of loss-making firms—can yield different reference points.
- Calling the S&P 500 a peer group: it is a broad large-cap index, and its market-cap weighting gives larger constituents greater influence.
- Reading a high P/E as proof of overvaluation: the premium may reflect a different expected growth profile, but the ratio does not establish whether expectations are justified.
- Reading a low P/E as proof of undervaluation: weak or uncertain earnings can make a low multiple a warning rather than an opportunity.
- Using P/E for a loss-making company: conventional P/E does not provide a useful normal comparison when earnings are negative.
How to present the result clearly
A useful comparison states the stock’s multiple, the chosen industry reference, and the S&P 500 reference; identifies whether each uses trailing or forward earnings; and gives the dates and sources. For an industry statistic, also say whether it is a median, average, or aggregate and how loss-making firms are treated. If an input is unavailable or its construction is unclear, disclose that limitation instead of implying precision.
Then describe the relative result in plain language and give the key contextual reason or unresolved question. For example, an analysis might say that a stock’s forward P/E is above its industry reference and the index on the stated date, while noting that the figures rely on forecasts and that the company’s growth outlook differs from its peers. Such wording separates the measured comparison from the interpretation; it does not turn either into a fair-value conclusion.
