A single large-midcap index fund can combine large- and mid-cap exposure in one scheme; separate large-cap and mid-cap funds let you choose and manage the split yourself. To compare them, look past the labels: check each option’s benchmark and allocation, actual holdings, costs, tracking, and the time you are willing to spend monitoring the portfolio. Neither structure is automatically better.
Start by defining what you want the funds to do
This comparison is often made in the context of Indian mutual funds, including funds that track the Nifty LargeMidcap 250. The title does not name a country or index, though, so the Nifty example below is specifically an Indian illustration—not a rule for every fund marketed as large-midcap. The basic comparison applies more broadly: one fund follows one benchmark, while two funds let you choose separate large-cap and mid-cap exposures.

Before looking at returns, decide what role the investment should play in your portfolio. Are you seeking exposure to both company-size segments in a defined proportion, or do you want the ability to set that proportion yourself? The first points toward a single fund whose index methodology fits your aim. The second may point toward separate funds, provided you are prepared to monitor and, if needed, rebalance the combined allocation.
An index is not itself an investable fund. An index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund that seeks to track an index, and it may hold all the index’s securities or use a representative sample. The SEC’s Investor.gov explanation of index funds makes this distinction. A fund’s name therefore does not tell you exactly what it owns or how closely its results will match its benchmark.

What a “large-midcap” label can—and cannot—tell you
The Nifty LargeMidcap 250 illustration
Zerodha Fund House describes its Nifty LargeMidcap 250 Index Fund as tracking the Nifty LargeMidcap 250 Index TRI. Its product page describes an index composition of the top 100 large-cap companies and the next 150 mid-cap companies, with equal allocation between the two groups. In the issuer’s illustration, a ₹1,000 investment allocates ₹500 to each group.
That is the design described for this particular index and fund, not a universal definition of “large-midcap.” It also describes allocation between the two groups, not a promise about returns or a guarantee that the fund will exactly match index performance. Check the current benchmark methodology and the fund’s own documents rather than inferring the allocation from a product name.
Separate funds define a split you choose
With one large-cap fund and one mid-cap fund, your contributions determine how much you initially put into each. Over time, the proportions in the combined portfolio may move away from the split you intended as the holdings change in value. You can decide whether to redirect new contributions or make other adjustments to restore your chosen proportions; either approach involves a decision and some monitoring.

The two funds’ benchmarks and holdings still matter. A label such as “large-cap” or “mid-cap” is not a substitute for inspecting what each scheme tracks and owns. You are choosing two exposures, not simply dividing a fixed amount between two interchangeable boxes.
Compare the structures side by side
| Question | One large-midcap index fund | Separate large-cap and mid-cap funds |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the large/mid split? | The selected index methodology and the fund’s implementation. In the cited Nifty LargeMidcap 250 example, the issuer describes an equal allocation between 100 large-cap and 150 mid-cap companies. | You set the proportions through contributions and any later adjustments, subject to what the two funds’ benchmarks and holdings provide. |
| What benchmarks must you inspect? | One benchmark, including its construction and the fund’s approach to replicating it. | Both benchmarks, then the combined exposure they create. |
| How many holdings lists need review? | The fund’s holdings and benchmark are the primary items to examine; a fund may sample rather than hold every constituent. | Both funds’ holdings, including securities that may appear in both. |
| How should costs be assessed? | Check the scheme’s current expense ratio and applicable transaction costs. | Check the costs of both schemes and any account-level trading charges. Two funds are not automatically more or less expensive. |
| What tracking should be reviewed? | Compare the fund with its own benchmark over matching periods, using tracking difference and tracking error where reported. | Assess each fund against its own benchmark over matching periods, then consider the combined portfolio exposure. |
| Who handles allocation maintenance? | The index determines the target exposure; the fund makes holdings changes in line with its benchmark. | You monitor the combined proportions and decide whether and when to adjust them. |
Check the benchmark before comparing performance
Confirm the index’s rules and weight scheme
Read the benchmark name in the scheme documents and find out how its constituents and weights are determined. In the Nifty example, the issuer’s description supplies a specific group split. Other products bearing a large-midcap label may follow different index rules, so do not assume that the example applies to them.
For a separate-fund approach, inspect the benchmark of each scheme. The relevant question is not just whether one is called large-cap and the other mid-cap, but whether their actual benchmark exposures together produce the mix you want. Look at index constituents and weighting as well as the names assigned to the categories.

Understand the fund’s replication approach
Index funds seek to track an index, but they can differ from it. The SEC notes that sampling, fees, trading costs, and tracking error can contribute to a gap between an index fund’s returns and those of its benchmark. A fund’s objective is therefore not the same as a guarantee of identical results.

Check the fund’s stated approach and its reported tracking information. For a single fund, compare that fund with the benchmark it says it tracks. For two funds, assess each against its own benchmark; evaluating just one combined headline return can hide how either component is behaving relative to its target.
Compare costs on an equivalent basis
Fund expenses reduce investor returns. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 investor bulletin directs investors to the standardized fee table in a prospectus and notes that ETF investors may also face commissions and market-price premiums or discounts to net asset value. These are general investor-education points from a U.S. regulator; they do not establish India-specific costs, rules, or account outcomes.
For an Indian scheme comparison, use current scheme documents and compare the same type of plan or share class and the same investment period. For a one-fund choice, inspect that scheme’s expense ratio and applicable transaction costs. For two funds, account for the costs of both schemes and any account-level trading charges that apply to your situation. Do not conclude that two funds necessarily cost more—or that one fund must be cheaper—without checking the relevant figures and fee basis.
Keep the cost comparison separate from the tracking comparison. A low stated expense ratio alone does not establish that a fund has tracked its benchmark more closely over a particular period. Compare the available tracking data as well, using like-for-like periods and the benchmark associated with each fund.

Owning more than one fund does not automatically mean owning more distinct investments. The SEC’s diversification guidance recommends examining top holdings and warns that several funds can have overlapping securities. That principle matters when comparing one blended fund with a pair of funds: the number of schemes is not a measure of diversification.

Review each fund’s actual holdings and top positions. In a two-fund portfolio, note where the same companies appear in both lists and how prominent they are. In a single-fund portfolio, inspect the fund’s own holdings and the benchmark’s composition. Use the published holdings rather than guessing from the labels or from the number of funds.
Holdings can change as a benchmark changes and a fund implements it. Treat the holdings information as a dated view, and consult current fund information before making a decision. The practical aim is to understand the exposures you actually own, not to assume that every holding list remains fixed.
Decide whether you want allocation control or less portfolio upkeep
A single scheme reduces the number of positions you manage
One fund may simplify the investor’s side of the portfolio by putting both segments in a single scheme. It does not mean the underlying exposure is static: the fund can change holdings in line with the benchmark it follows. You still need to understand the index construction and review the scheme’s current information.
Two schemes provide control—and responsibility
Separate funds give you more control over the relative amounts allocated to large-cap and mid-cap exposure. That flexibility is useful only if the chosen proportions are intentional and you are willing to keep track of them. If the proportions drift, you will need to decide whether to accept the change or rebalance. Rebalancing is a portfolio-maintenance choice, not a guarantee of better performance.
Be clear about what you will monitor and how you will make adjustments before choosing this structure. The comparison is not simply “one fund versus two”: it is one benchmark-defined allocation versus an allocation that you control and maintain.
Use a consistent process to compare actual schemes
- Write down the intended role and mix. Decide whether you want a benchmark-defined combination or a large-cap/mid-cap split that you choose. Do not start with a recent-return ranking.
- Identify each scheme’s benchmark. For a blended fund, confirm the named index and its methodology. For separate funds, identify both benchmarks and consider their combined exposure.
- Read the current scheme documents. Check the objective, index-replication approach, current holdings information, expense details, tracking data, and risk information. Terms and ratings can change, so an older document may not describe the current scheme.
- Compare holdings and overlap. Look at top holdings and the full available holdings lists. Note repeated securities in a two-fund combination rather than treating the fund count as proof of diversification.
- Put costs on a like-for-like basis. Compare the same kind of plan or share class, fee basis, and investment period. Include applicable transaction or account-level charges where relevant.
- Review tracking against the right target. Match each fund with its own benchmark and compare the same periods. For a two-fund structure, inspect both tracking records before considering the combined exposure.
- Choose a maintenance plan. For separate funds, decide how you will monitor the proportions and what would prompt an adjustment. For a single fund, understand that the benchmark and scheme documents—not your personal target split—govern the exposure.
- Check suitability in the full portfolio. Consider your objectives, risk tolerance, time horizon, and the rest of your investments. A scheme’s historical performance does not establish that it is the better choice for you.
Common comparison mistakes to avoid
Assuming the name tells you the allocation. “Large-midcap” is not enough information to infer the benchmark’s construction or group weights. The Nifty LargeMidcap 250 example described by Zerodha Fund House has a particular structure—100 large-cap companies and 150 mid-cap companies, with equal allocation between the groups—but another product may not use those rules. Verify the benchmark and methodology for the scheme in front of you.

Treating an index and a fund as identical. You cannot buy the index itself through an index-fund label. The fund seeks to track its benchmark and may use sampling; expenses, trading costs, and tracking error can affect the result. Look at actual fund documents and tracking information rather than expecting exact index returns.
Counting schemes instead of exposures. Two funds do not necessarily mean two distinct sets of holdings. Compare their holdings lists and top positions, and identify overlaps. Conversely, one scheme is not automatically more concentrated simply because it appears as a single line in an account. Use the underlying holdings to understand exposure.
Comparing unlike fee figures or periods. A comparison is less useful if it mixes different plans or share classes, different periods, or different cost measures. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 bulletin emphasizes the effect of expenses on returns and directs investors to standardized prospectus fee information. Apply the same discipline to the current documents for the schemes being considered, and include any relevant transaction charges.
Choosing on past performance alone. Performance figures should be compared against the relevant benchmark and over matching periods, but even a favorable historical record does not establish that a structure suits your goals or risk tolerance. Check the investment objective, risk disclosures, holdings, costs, and maintenance demands as well.

A SEBI-hosted scheme information document for the Edelweiss NIFTY Large Mid Cap 250 Index Fund describes it as an open-ended scheme replicating the Nifty LargeMidcap 250 Index, notes tracking error, and gives a “very high” risk rating. That statement concerns the scheme document cited here; risk classifications and scheme terms can change. Check the current documents for any fund you are considering instead of transferring that rating to every large-midcap product.
The U.S. SEC materials cited above are useful for general principles about index funds, expenses, tracking, and diversification. They do not determine Indian tax treatment, regulatory requirements, or account-specific outcomes. No tax comparison follows from the fund-structure comparison alone; consult current Indian scheme and regulatory information for those matters.

How to make the choice
A single large-midcap index fund is a plausible fit when the benchmark’s defined allocation matches the exposure you want and you prefer to manage one scheme rather than maintain two separate proportions. Separate funds are a plausible fit when you want to choose the large-cap/mid-cap split and are willing to monitor it. These are structural trade-offs, not performance predictions.
There is no universal winner established by the fund labels or by the fact that an investment tracks an index. The better comparison is between specific current schemes and the role you need them to play: benchmark construction, holdings, cost basis, tracking record, risk disclosures, and the effort you are prepared to take on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one large-midcap index fund replace separate large-cap and mid-cap funds?
It can provide both segments in one scheme if its benchmark allocation matches the exposure you want. Separate funds let you set the split yourself, but you take on the job of monitoring and potentially rebalancing it. Compare the actual benchmark, holdings, costs, and tracking information before deciding.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes every large-midcap fund split its money equally between large-cap and mid-cap stocks?
No. Zerodha Fund House describes its Nifty LargeMidcap 250 Index Fund as tracking an index with 100 large-cap and 150 mid-cap companies and an equal allocation between the groups. That is the described design of this particular example, not a universal definition. Check each scheme’s current benchmark methodology.
Are two separate funds automatically more diversified than one blended fund?
No. Multiple schemes can hold some of the same securities. Review the funds’ actual holdings and top positions to identify overlap and concentration; the number of schemes alone does not establish diversification.
How should I compare the costs of one fund with two?
Check current expense details on a like-for-like plan or share-class and investment-period basis. For two funds, consider the costs of both schemes and any applicable account-level trading charges. ETF investors may also face commissions and market-price differences from net asset value. Do not assume either structure is always cheaper.
Can I expect an index fund to match its benchmark exactly?
No. An index fund seeks to track its benchmark, but sampling, fees, trading costs, and tracking error can contribute to differences. Review reported tracking information against the fund’s own benchmark over matching periods.

The Bottom Line
Choose between a benchmark-defined combined allocation and the extra control—and upkeep—of separate funds. Confirm current benchmarks, holdings, costs, tracking information, and risk disclosures; neither the fund label nor the number of schemes settles the comparison.
