Choose produce by checking its condition, matching its ripeness to when you plan to use it, and asking the grower how to judge that variety. Buy delicate and refrigerated foods last, keep perishables cold and separate from raw meat, and wash produce under running water at home. The best choice is the one that is sound, suited to your plans, and likely to be used before it spoils.
How to inspect produce before you buy
Look closely at the item or bunch you intend to take home. Favor produce that looks fresh and is free of bruises, cuts, mold, and rot. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Public Affairs Specialist Meredith Carothers explains: “It’s important to choose fruits and vegetables that are not bruised or damaged, because these can provide an environment where bacteria multiply and thrive.” (USDA FSIS, updated August 6, 2024.)
A small bruise does not necessarily mean the entire item must be discarded, but damaged produce is less suitable for keeping. If you buy an otherwise usable item with a bruised or damaged area, cut that area away and use the produce promptly rather than storing it as if it were undamaged.
How to judge ripeness and choose the right amount
Match ripeness to your schedule
Decide whether you want produce to eat today or to keep for later. Ask the grower how to tell when the specific variety is ready and how it is likely to hold up. Appearance can help you compare condition, but there is no single ripeness cue that works for every crop or variety.

Buy for meals you expect to make
Compare the amount on offer with what you can realistically use and the produce’s condition and likely usable life. A generous bunch is not a good value if much of it will go unused. Prices vary by market and vendor; no price comparison can establish which option is the better buy for your budget.

- What is ripe and ready to eat now?
- How can I tell when this variety is ready?
- When was it harvested, and how should I store it?
- What is in season locally right now?
Use vendor advice to inform your choice, not as an independent guarantee of safety or quality. If you want to check seasonality beyond the market, look for a chart for your state: USDA’s farmers market education toolkit points shoppers toward state-specific seasonality information (USDA Agricultural Marketing Service toolkit, 2025). What is in season depends on location and date, so a universal peak-produce list can mislead.

When to shop for perishable foods
Browse and buy shelf-stable goods first when possible. Save meat, soft cheese, pre-cut fruit, and other perishables for the end of your visit. Select vendors who keep raw meat and soft cheese on ice, in a cooler, or under refrigeration.

Keep cold foods cold on the way home
USDA FSIS recommends using an insulated bag or cooler with ice, frozen gel packs, or frozen beverages to keep perishables below 40°F during the rest of the visit and the trip home (USDA FSIS, updated August 6, 2024). An insulated cooler bag for a farmers market is useful if you plan to bring home foods that need chilling.
Keep raw meat and poultry in a separate bag from produce and ready-to-eat food. If the temperature outside is above 90°F, USDA FSIS says perishable foods have only one hour before bacteria can multiply to dangerous levels. Avoid leaving them unrefrigerated while you continue shopping or travel home.

How to wash and store produce at home
- Rinse before eating, cutting, or cooking. Wash produce under running water, even if you intend to peel it. FDA says, “Washing can reduce bacteria that may be present but will not eliminate it.” (FDA, Selecting and Serving Produce Safely.)
- Use a clean brush for firm produce. Scrub items such as melons and cucumbers with a clean produce brush under running water.
- Skip soap and produce washes. Do not use soap, detergent, or commercial produce wash. USDA FSIS also advises against washing produce with soap (USDA FSIS, updated February 7, 2024).
- Refrigerate items that need chilling. Refrigerate cut or peeled produce promptly, along with pre-cut or packaged produce as directed. FDA advises keeping perishable produce such as strawberries, lettuce, herbs, and mushrooms at 40°F or below.
Wash reusable fabric shopping bags frequently with hot water and soap. Use separate bags for raw meat and produce or ready-to-eat foods to reduce the chance of cross-contamination.
