What Farm Rescue provides
Farm Rescue helps farm and ranch families affected by a major illness, injury, or natural disaster complete time-sensitive work. The assistance is operational: equipment and volunteer labor for approved farm tasks, rather than cash grants for routine expenses such as bills, feed, or repairs.
Farm Rescue currently lists these service categories on its homepage:
- Planting
- Haying
- Harvesting
- Commodity hauling
- Livestock feeding
The organization’s 2023 annual report also describes planting and harvesting, hay baling and transport, and livestock feeding. The exact work available for an applicant depends on the circumstances and Farm Rescue’s capacity.

Who may qualify and where help is available
Farm Rescue’s stated focus is farm and ranch families facing a major injury, illness, or natural disaster. Assistance is free to qualified families, but that does not mean every applicant or every requested task will be approved. The organization reviews each situation; check the live application page or speak with Farm Rescue about eligibility and service in your area.
Service territory and the timing of specific work can change. In a February 25, 2026 announcement about expanding into Missouri, Farm Rescue said Missouri would become its 11th state served. It announced plans to begin harvest assistance there in fall 2026, followed by planting, haying, commodity hauling, and livestock feeding. Those are plans stated in that release, not confirmation that a particular service is currently available in every Missouri location. Contact the organization to verify local availability.

How to apply for Farm Rescue assistance
Farm Rescue’s application page describes this general process:
- Submit an application. Share your contact information, describe what happened, and explain what help is needed. The page estimates that the application usually takes about 20–30 minutes.
- Complete a phone interview. A Farm Rescue representative discusses the situation and the requested work.
- Wait for an approval decision. The page says decisions are often made within 48 hours after the interview. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed decision deadline or service date; complete applications receive priority consideration.
- Schedule approved work. If the request is approved, the organization schedules the task and volunteers carry it out.
The application page lists materials that may support an application. Depending on the case, these can include a Producer Farm Data Report from the local Farm Service Agency (FSA), a prior-year FSA-578 showing farming history, field maps with the relevant fields highlighted, a physician letter for an illness or injury, and a photo. Farm Rescue may request additional information. Check the live page for current requirements and instructions.

- Our Stroke Medical Identification clearly explains communication challenges due to a stroke. It informs others that while the holder may have difficulty speaking, they can understand what is being said. This helps reduce frustration and ensures a smoother experience when interacting with people in shops, public places, or medical settings.
- The Stroke Medical Photo ID features the holder’s name and photograph for quick identification. The visual and written details make it clear to anyone assisting what the individual needs and how to best support them during a difficult moment.
- This identification includes two emergency contact fields on the reverse side, allowing first responders or bystanders to contact loved ones immediately in case of an emergency. It ensures the holder is supported and their condition is understood, even if they cannot explain it themselves.
- Our Stroke Medical Identification is credit-card sized (3.4 x 2.1 inches) and made from biodegradable plastic. Its lightweight, sturdy design fits easily in a wallet or purse, ensuring convenience without compromising sustainability.
- The card politely requests patience and assistance, such as using pen and paper for communication. This helps foster understanding and cooperation from others in non-emergency situations, whether in social settings, work environments, or public spaces.
How to contact Farm Rescue or refer a family
Farm Rescue says prospective applicants can also be referred. Its homepage lists 701-252-2017 and [email protected], along with weekday office hours. Confirm current contact details and hours on the organization’s website.
Farm Rescue and the Farm Rescue Foundation are different programs
Farm Rescue’s volunteer services focus on getting essential farm work done. The separate Farm Rescue Foundation describes support for families facing physical challenges, including expenses for specialized equipment or accessibility improvements that may help someone continue farming or ranching. Examples include seated lifts and automated systems for particular equipment. The Foundation’s program is distinct from operational field work; contact it directly to determine whether a specific need or applicant qualifies.

Farm Rescue’s published figures offer a dated picture of its scale, not a current live count. Its FY2023 annual report said it had assisted more than 1,000 farm families across eight states and listed 300+ skilled volunteers, nine staff members, and 1,700+ donors and sponsors. A January 2025 announcement said the organization had assisted nearly 1,200 farm and ranch families over 20 years. These figures come from different publications and should not be combined into a new current total.
Farm Rescue also reports that Regional Strategic, Ltd. evaluator Mark Imerman estimated more than $10 in direct and indirect economic impact for every $1 spent. That is an attributed estimate reported by Farm Rescue, not a guarantee of financial benefit for an individual farm or a universally applicable measure.
