By April 14, 2024, corn planting had reached 6% across the 18 leading corn-growing states, up from 3% the week before and just ahead of the five-year average of 5%. USDA’s April 15 Crop Progress report also said planting had begun in all but five of those states. These are historical figures for the 2024 season, not a current planting update.
What the April 14, 2024 report showed
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released its third Crop Progress report of the 2024 growing season on April 15, with progress measured as of Sunday, April 14. Successful Farming reported the national corn figures for the top 18 corn-growing states:
| Measure | Progress |
|---|---|
| As of April 14, 2024 | 6% |
| Previous week | 3% |
| Five-year average | 5% |
The 6% figure applies to the report’s 18 leading corn-growing states; it should not be read as a measure of every U.S. corn acre. The comparison shows planting was ahead of both the previous week and the five-year benchmark.
What “six more states” means
The report summary said planting had begun in all but five of the top 18 states. The headline’s “six more states” refers to states newly reporting planting progress, but the accessible article text does not name them. It also does not provide the exact weekly percentages for Missouri or North Carolina, so their gains cannot be quantified or ranked from these figures.

How to read Crop Progress figures
NASS Crop Progress reports track planting, harvesting, crop development stages, and crop condition during the growing season. State reporters estimate the share of a crop that has reached or passed a specified stage as of Sunday. NASS says its reporters are primarily extension agents and Farm Service Agency staff; nearly every county is represented by at least one reporter, and returned reports account for more than 75% of acreage for major commodities.
Weekly tables can compare the current week with the prior week, prior year, and five-year average. Those are measures of timing and progress—not forecasts of final yield, production, or market prices. For the series and reporting details, see the USDA NASS Crop Progress publication index and its Crop Progress and Conditions survey guide. The index lists reports weekly during the growing season; as of October 8, 2026, its latest listed report was dated October 5, 2026. That current schedule does not change the historical April 2024 figures.
