What you are choosing when you choose an AI agent
An agent is more than a model answering a prompt. Anthropic describes it as a model that directs its own process and tool use toward a goal, repeatedly planning, acting, observing results, and adjusting until it finishes or needs human input. The working system also includes its instructions and guardrails, tools, and context. That is why a strong model can still be a poor fit if its runtime, permissions, or integrations do not match your task. Anthropic explains the agent loop and practical design considerations.

If you are building rather than buying a ready-to-use product, the implementation choice matters too. OpenAI’s documentation distinguishes a managed Agents API for long-running tasks, an Agents SDK for custom tools and workflows in an application, and the Responses API for direct model calls or a more self-built integration. These approaches differ in where the agent runs, how state is stored, how tools execute, and how much implementation work you take on. OpenAI’s agent documentation outlines these options.
How to choose an AI agent for research, coding, and business tasks
Start with the task and the consequences of an error. Write down the inputs the agent needs, the output you expect, the tools it must use, and what a person must check or approve. Then test a small shortlist against the same representative work.

For research
Use a multi-step investigation rather than a one-question fact lookup. Check whether an agent can make a sensible plan, find relevant sources, attach claims to evidence, handle conflicting material, and produce a synthesis a person can audit. Google’s Gemini documentation describes Deep Research as an autonomous research agent for planning, conducting, and synthesizing work such as market analysis, due diligence, and literature reviews. Keep benchmark claims in perspective. OpenAI reported that ChatGPT Agent scored 68.9% on BrowseComp, 17.4 percentage points above Deep Research in that evaluation. That is a vendor-reported result for a particular task set, model, and evaluation setup—not proof of a general ranking for the research you need done. For coding
Test a real issue from the repository you intend to use, not a toy coding prompt. The agent should be able to inspect the codebase, use the required terminal, editor, and runtime, make a focused change, run tests, explain failures, and leave a diff a developer can review. Also check whether its workspace persists, whether execution is sandboxed, and whether repository credentials and network access are restricted appropriately. Managed and application-controlled execution arrangements can differ substantially. OpenAI’s documentation describes agent execution and tool arrangements.

A published coding score is useful only with its setup attached. OpenAI’s system card describes SWE-bench Verified as a fixed subset of 477 validated tasks and explains its task and grading setup; it also describes a pull-request evaluation graded with hidden tests. Neither result establishes dependable performance on an arbitrary codebase. OpenAI’s system card describes these evaluations.

For business workflows
Pick one concrete workflow, such as drafting a customer response, preparing an expense report, or updating a record. Determine which systems and data it needs, which actions it may take, which steps require approval, and how an operator can inspect or undo its work. Test what happens when information is missing: in Anthropic’s receipt example, the agent pauses when it encounters an unknown expense cap and asks whether it should retrieve the policy before continuing. Anthropic’s article illustrates how an agent can seek human input.
For sensitive records or external systems, inspect the actual permissions and network settings rather than relying on a product’s general safety description. Google’s managed agents documentation says the service is in Public Preview and recommends reviewing actions and outputs before sensitive workflows. It also says outbound network access is unrestricted by default unless restricted with an allowlist, and advises using trusted tools, minimum necessary permissions, and carefully scoped credentials. Compare the whole system, not just its model
Use these criteria to compare finalists. Decide in advance which are essential for your task and which are trade-offs you can accept.
- Task quality: Does it produce correct, complete work on representative tasks?
- Evidence and inspectability: Can you inspect sources for research, diffs and test output for code, or audit records for business actions?
- Tool and integration fit: Can it use the browsers, repositories, files, APIs, and business applications you need?
- Execution and data boundaries: Does it run in a managed service or your own runtime? What are its sandbox, network, and credential controls?
- Control and recovery: Can you interrupt it? Does it request approval, escalate uncertainty, and support rollback?
- Reliability and operating cost: How often does it complete successfully, and what do retries, latency, usage charges, setup, human review, and mistakes add?
There is no comparable current price table established across the providers covered here. Verify current plan and usage charges directly with each vendor, and include setup and human oversight in your cost comparison.

When does using multiple agents help?
Do not assume that more agents produce better results. Google Research’s January 28, 2026 report, “Towards a science of scaling agent systems: When and why agent systems work,” describes a controlled evaluation of 180 agent configurations. It found that results depend on task structure and system architecture: coordination helped some parallelizable tasks and harmed some sequential ones. The report illustrates that variation with +81% on Finance-Agent and −70% on PlanCraft. Those figures apply to the configurations and benchmarks studied; they are not expected gains for every deployment. Google Research’s report explains the evaluation.
How to run a practical pilot
- Select representative tasks. Choose a small set for research, coding, or the business workflow you want to improve. Define pass/fail criteria before testing products.
- Make comparisons fair. Give finalists the same tasks under comparable conditions. Keep the prompts, outputs, tool settings, and model or version details.
- Score the work, not the demo. Assess correctness, completeness, citation or test quality, time saved after review, and how the agent recovers from mistakes.
- Test safeguards. Begin with least-privilege access. Check approval gates, whether you can stop the agent, and how you can undo actions.
- Calculate the real cost. Count successful output, retries, setup, monitoring, and human correction—not just usage charges.
- Choose the simplest setup that passes. Try multiple agents only where independent parallel work could help, and measure coordination costs as well.
What public evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Benchmarks can help identify systems worth testing, but they are not buying decisions. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent system card says that it “does not demonstrate improved performance on software engineering and AI research tasks relevant to AI self-improvement risks.” That statement is limited to the evaluated tasks and comparison described in the system card; it does not say the product cannot help with ordinary coding or research. Read the system card’s evaluation context.
Transparency itself is worth checking. The MIT-led 2025 AI Agent Index, published for FAccT ’26, found that 25 of 30 indexed agents disclosed no internal safety results, 23 of 30 had no third-party testing information, and only 3 of 30 had documented third-party testing. These counts describe the Index’s sample and annotation method, not every agent on the market. The AI Agent Index documents its coverage and findings.
