How to Check Which RAM Is Compatible With Your Motherboard

Check your motherboard and CPU specifications, match the RAM generation and form factor, then verify the kit’s capacity, speed and QVL configuration.

To check RAM compatibility, identify your exact motherboard model and revision, then confirm its supported DDR generation, module type, capacity, slot configuration and memory speeds in the manufacturer’s specifications or manual. Check your processor’s memory limits as well. For a particular kit, search the motherboard’s memory support list (QVL) by its exact part number and the number of modules you plan to install.

1. Identify the exact motherboard model

Start with the full model name and, where applicable, the board revision. Similar names can refer to boards with different memory specifications. Look for the model printed on the board or in your computer’s system information, then open the manufacturer’s support page and manual for that exact model. Intel also advises consulting the motherboard documentation or vendor when checking a specific memory model: Intel’s processor memory guidance.

2. Match the memory generation and module type

DDR generation

Check whether the board accepts DDR4, DDR5 or another generation. These generations are not interchangeable: a DDR5 module will not fit or work in a DDR4 slot, and vice versa. The notch positions differ, so do not rely on a kit’s appearance or its advertised speed to determine compatibility. See Crucial’s guide to motherboard and RAM compatibility.

DIMM or SO-DIMM

Confirm the module form factor specified for your system. Desktop motherboards generally use full-size DIMMs; laptops and some compact systems commonly use smaller SO-DIMMs. Check the board or computer documentation rather than assuming based on the device’s size.

  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = UDIMM, Pin Count = 288-pin, PC Speed = PC4-25600, Voltage = 1.2V, Rank and Configuration = 1Rx8 or 2Rx8

3. Check capacity, slots and processor limits

Use the motherboard specifications to find its maximum memory capacity, number of slots, supported module sizes and permitted configurations. A board’s headline maximum does not guarantee that every CPU and arrangement of modules can reach it. The processor also has memory limits, including maximum capacity, speed and supported channels. Check the official specifications for the CPU installed in your system as well as the board. Intel explains how to find those processor limits in its memory size, speed and channel guide.

When comparing kits, note both total capacity and capacity per module, plus how many modules you will install. A kit’s total capacity alone does not show whether its module sizes or slot arrangement are supported.

4. Look up the exact kit in the QVL

A motherboard vendor’s Qualified Vendor List (QVL), also called a memory support list, records memory combinations the vendor tested. Search for the kit’s complete part number, then check the listed module count or configuration. A listing is useful evidence that the specific combination was tested; an absent listing does not, by itself, establish that the kit is incompatible.

Kingston’s memory support guidance recommends checking the motherboard QVL and the processor’s supported speed. Its memory finder can help identify candidate upgrades by system or memory specifications, but use the motherboard and CPU documentation to verify the final choice.

PUSKILL DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Desktop RAM Kit Heatsink, 32GB (2x16GB)
  • [UNCOMPROMISED 32GB PERFORMANCE] Supercharge your rig with 32GB (two 16GB modules) of high-speed memory. Designed for power users, this kit effortlessly handles heavy 4K video editing, complex 3D rendering, and lets you play AAA games while streaming without a single stutter.
  • [3200MHZ BLAZING FAST SPEED & CL16] Experience ultra-responsive multitasking with speeds up to 3200MHz (PC4-25600) and tight CL16-18-18-42 timings. NOTE: To achieve the advertised 3200MHz speed, you MUST enable the XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) profile in your motherboard's BIOS.
  • [AGGRESSIVE ALUMINUM HEATSINK] Keep your system cool under extreme pressure. The premium aluminum heat spreader efficiently dissipates heat from the memory modules, preventing thermal throttling during marathon gaming sessions while adding a sleek, aggressive look to your build.
  • [MAXIMUM DUAL-CHANNEL POWER] Installing this matched pair activates dual-channel architecture, doubling your memory bandwidth. This dramatically increases frame rates in CPU-intensive games and cuts down rendering times for creators.
  • [BROAD COMPATIBILITY & DIY INSTALL] Engineered to work flawlessly with major Intel and AMD motherboards. Easy push-to-install design for 288-pin desktop slots. (Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).

5. Treat advertised speeds as conditional

A kit’s advertised high speed may depend on enabling a BIOS memory profile and is not guaranteed for every processor, motherboard and DIMM configuration. Compare the kit’s speed with both the board’s specifications and the CPU’s supported memory speed. Start with settings supported by the system vendors; do not assume a profile’s advertised speed is the system’s default or guaranteed operating speed.

6. Check BIOS support for an older system

When upgrading an older computer or installing newer, high-capacity modules, review the motherboard vendor’s current BIOS notes and memory support page. Some newer DRAM chip densities may require BIOS optimization, and older systems may not support certain higher-density modules. Kingston discusses BIOS and configuration considerations in its memory support information.

Compare candidate kits before buying

What to compare What to verify
Generation The kit’s DDR generation matches the motherboard.
Form factor The system accepts DIMMs or SO-DIMMs as appropriate.
Capacity and layout Total capacity, per-module capacity, module count and populated slots fit the board and CPU limits.
Speed The standard speed and any profile-based speed are supported by the board and processor.
Tested combination The exact kit part number and intended module configuration appear on the motherboard QVL, if listed.
Firmware The board’s BIOS support is appropriate for the memory, particularly for an older platform or newer high-capacity modules.

There is no universally compatible kit based on the motherboard model alone: the right choice depends on the exact board, CPU and memory configuration.
