If your computer works well and a RAM upgrade is optional, keep using it rather than buying in a rush. If memory use is slowing down work you need to do, choose a compatible kit that solves that problem within your budget. Prices and stock vary by retailer and location, so check current local listings and return terms before deciding.
Decide whether the upgrade is worth paying for now
Start with the workload that matters to you: the applications, games, or tasks that make the computer feel slow. Check memory use while those are running. If use is not high and performance is acceptable, there may be no financial benefit to upgrading immediately.

If memory pressure coincides with slowdowns, an upgrade may help. Set a budget and identify the capacity your workload needs before shopping. MSI’s vendor guide suggests buying sufficient capacity rather than stretching for an aspirational target when prices strain the budget; its example capacities are not universal requirements for every user. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Optional upgrade: Continue using the current system, monitor local offers, and decide what price would make the upgrade worthwhile.
- Work is affected: Prioritize enough compatible memory for the applications causing the problem, while weighing the upgrade against other uses for the money.
Waiting does not guarantee a price drop, and a market forecast does not guarantee that a particular retailer’s price will rise.

What market forecasts can—and cannot—tell you
Memory-market reports provide context about supply pressure, but their figures refer to specific markets and dates. They are not a substitute for checking the price of a consumer kit in your area.
| Source and date | Reported figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| TrendForce, July 9, 2026 | 13–18% quarter over quarter | Forecast increase in server DRAM contract prices for 3Q26—not retail desktop RAM pricing. TrendForce also expected server contract prices to keep rising quarterly from 2H26 through 2H27, at a moderating pace. TrendForce’s July 2026 server DRAM outlook |
| TrendForce, February 2, 2026 | 90–95% quarter over quarter for conventional DRAM; above 100% for PC DRAM | Forecast contract-price increases for 1Q26. These were dated forecasts for contract markets, not measurements of retail kit inflation. TrendForce’s February 2026 DRAM forecast |
| Counterpoint Research, 2026 | Up to 90% versus Q4 2025 | The insight title describes a surge in memory prices; the available page details do not establish a more specific market segment or methodology. Counterpoint Research’s memory-price insight |
| MSI, 2026 | Over 300% in six months | A claim in a vendor guide about DDR5 prices, not an independently established universal retail statistic. MSI’s guide to choosing RAM |
TrendForce’s July outlook concerns server DRAM contracts and describes undersupply in that market; it cannot establish what a particular DDR4 or DDR5 consumer kit costs. The February forecast period has passed, so its figures should be read as projections made at the time, not as current price measurements.

How to find an alternative when your preferred kit is out of stock
Look for another kit supported by your computer or motherboard rather than buying based only on a similar name or advertised speed. Check these details in the system or board documentation:
- DDR generation: The system must support the kit’s generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5.
- Form factor: Confirm that the modules physically fit the computer, such as desktop DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs.
- Capacity and supported limit: Check the system’s maximum supported memory and the capacity needed for your workload.
- Speed and platform support: Confirm that the processor and motherboard support the kit’s settings.
Use the computer or motherboard maker’s documentation or a compatibility tool to check a substitute. MSI’s guide links to Kingston’s memory configurator as a selection aid. When comparing listings, consider the total price, seller reliability, delivery, and return window—not just the advertised speed.

Understand XMP and EXPO before paying extra for speed
Some kits advertise speeds that depend on enabling an XMP or EXPO memory profile. The CPU, motherboard, and BIOS must support the relevant profile. Without it, a kit may run at standard JEDEC settings; advertised overclock speeds are not guaranteed on every system. Check platform documentation before treating the headline speed as a result your computer will deliver.
