If you suspect a wallet or DeFi account has been compromised, first confirm which activity is unauthorized, then protect any funds that remain. An exposed recovery phrase or private key requires a new wallet and a new phrase; revoking a token approval addresses only that permission. Secure any affected device or linked account, preserve transaction details, and report the incident through trusted channels. Do not send more money to a suspected scam or to anyone promising to recover your crypto.
First, confirm what happened and record the details
An unfamiliar transaction is not automatically unauthorized. Check its date and time, recipient address, amount or value, and the dapp involved. MetaMask recommends using a block explorer to inspect these details. Do not connect your wallet to an unfamiliar site or sign a new request just to investigate.

Before changing anything, save what you can: transaction hashes, timestamps, amounts, sending and receiving addresses, and the names of any exchange, wallet provider, or other service involved. Keep relevant messages, emails, and screenshots. This information can help providers and law enforcement understand what happened.

Choose the response based on what may be compromised
If someone may have your recovery phrase or private key
Treat that wallet and any accounts derived from the exposed phrase as compromised. Revoking an approval does not make them safe: someone with the phrase or key may still control the assets.

- Use a different device or browser profile you believe is safe. If the device itself may have malware, do not create a new wallet on it.
- Create a genuinely new wallet with a new recovery phrase. If the old wallet was linked to a Google or Apple account that may also be compromised, do not use that account to set up the new wallet.
- If funds remain, move them to the new wallet as soon as you can do so safely. A suspected sweeper script may take gas sent to the compromised address, so do not blindly send gas to it.
- Stop using the compromised wallet and all accounts derived from its exposed phrase. Do not enter the old phrase into a website or share it with anyone offering help.
If the likely problem is a token approval
A token approval gives a dapp or contract permission to move a specified kind and amount of token. If you suspect an approval is malicious, review permissions through a wallet or provider interface that you reach independently, then revoke permissions you do not trust. Interface labels and steps can change, so use the provider’s current official directions rather than links in unsolicited messages.
Revocation can block that specific permission; it cannot return tokens already transferred, and it does not protect a wallet whose phrase or private key was exposed. Treat those as separate problems.

If you signed a suspicious request
A signature can create risk even when you do not see an ordinary transaction with a network fee. Uniswap Labs explains that signatures may authorize token spending, including through Permit2-related flows. A review of ordinary on-chain approvals may therefore not show every permission you may have granted.

If your device, browser, or wallet extension may be compromised
Possible causes include malware, phishing, disclosure of a secret phrase or key, excessive contract permissions, or a fake wallet extension. MetaMask advises reviewing browser history and scanning the computer. Avoid using a suspected device to create a replacement wallet or enter sensitive credentials until you have addressed the device risk.
If a custodial account or linked provider may be compromised
Contact the provider through an official channel you verify independently—not a phone number, link, or direct message supplied by someone who contacted you unexpectedly. Change the account password and set alerts. Never give an unsolicited caller or message your password, recovery phrase, or one-time code.

Report the incident and understand what recovery can mean
If you are in the United States, FBI guidance asks victims to report promptly to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or contact a local FBI field office, and to include available transaction information. The FTC also warns that crypto transfers can be difficult to recover and do not carry the same legal protections as card payments.

For a self-custodial wallet, a support team cannot reverse a completed blockchain transaction. MetaMask states that, for its self-custodial service, “transactions cannot be reversed, nor missing funds restored.” That statement concerns its service; it should not be read as a claim about every provider or the outcome of every legal process.
Avoid losing more to recovery scams
Do not send additional money to a suspected scammer, pay extra “taxes” or fees to release funds, or pay a person or service claiming it can recover stolen crypto. The FBI specifically warns against sending more money or paying recovery services. Treat anyone asking for a phrase, private key, password, or one-time code as unsafe, even if they claim to represent a wallet provider, law enforcement, or a recovery team.
