Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery closed on October 6, 2026, and the new owner says its direct-to-consumer streaming products will unify into one service over time. The announcement does not specify the final service name, launch date, price, or which current app experience will remain. Until those details are announced, compare the services and plans available now, verify where the shows you want are streaming, and avoid cancelling a subscription solely because the companies now share an owner.
What the merger changed—and what it has not changed yet
Skydance announced on October 6, 2026, that its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery had closed, bringing Paramount and WBD under one owner. The combination includes Paramount+, HBO Max and Discovery+ among its streaming services. Skydance says the direct-to-consumer products “will unify into a single service over time.” That is a plan, not confirmation that the apps, subscriptions, catalogs or billing have already been combined.

The completion announcement does not give a launch date, final name or consumer price for a unified service. Nor does it provide a title-by-title timetable showing when individual films, series, sports or other programming might move. Ownership of a studio or service is not the same as an immediate change in where a title streams: distribution agreements and regional licensing can affect availability.

How to choose a streaming service after a merger
Make the decision in this order: identify the programming you need, confirm where it is available now, compare the actual plan costs and terms, and then check whether the service works for your household. A large combined catalog may sound appealing, but it does not tell you what is available today, in your country, on a particular plan, or at a price that fits your budget.
1. Make a short must-watch list
Write down the specific shows, films, sports, news or channels that would make a subscription worthwhile. Include who in the household watches each item and how often. Separate titles you want to watch now from titles you might watch someday; a speculative future catalog is not a strong reason to pay for a service today.
- Use exact titles or teams, leagues, events and channels where relevant, rather than a studio or service name.
- Mark each item as essential, desirable or merely interesting. This makes it easier to decide which service is worth keeping if several subscriptions overlap.
- For a series, check the availability of the season or episodes you intend to watch, not just the show’s page or a search result.
- For live programming, confirm the event, channel or local feed you need. A broad statement that a company has sports or news assets is not a plan-level schedule.
Skydance’s announcement describes a broad combined portfolio, but neither it nor the other sources cited here establish a complete current catalog or a migration schedule. Treat a title as available only after checking the service’s current catalog for your location.
2. Confirm the title’s current home in your country
Search each service’s current catalog or official plan information before subscribing or cancelling. Availability can differ by country and can change as rights agreements begin, expire or roll out. Do not assume that a title becomes available everywhere at the moment its studio changes ownership.
A current example shows why timing and geography matter. Netflix and Sony announced a global Pay-1 agreement that is expected to roll out gradually by territory, beginning later in 2026, with full global availability expected in early 2029. That agreement concerns its own licensing arrangement; it is not a timetable for Paramount or WBD programming. It illustrates that even a stated global deal can have a phased rollout rather than one simultaneous worldwide start.

If a title is not listed for your country, or its page does not say when it will be available, do not include it in your subscription decision as a confirmed benefit. If you travel or split time between countries, check the catalog and terms for the location where you expect to watch.
3. Compare the full cost, including advertising and bundles
Use the price shown on the official service page when you make the decision, because the merger announcements do not establish a new combined-service price. Compare the plan you would actually choose, not a headline starting price that may be for a different tier. Record whether the price is monthly or annual, whether it includes advertising, and what the renewal and cancellation terms say.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| What to compare | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Price and billing period | Current monthly or annual amount, billing frequency and renewal terms shown for your country | An annual plan can require paying more up front and may have different cancellation consequences than a monthly plan. |
| Advertising | Whether the plan includes ads and what the ad-free option costs, if offered | A lower advertised price may not match your preference or the viewing experience you want. |
| Bundle terms | Included services, eligibility, promotional period and price after any promotion | A bundle is useful only if you will use its included services and understand the ongoing cost. |
| Current service status | Whether the subscription is separate, bundled or billed through another provider | Knowing who bills you helps avoid keeping two subscriptions unintentionally or cancelling the wrong one. |
| Potential future combined service | Only a published price and terms, once announced | The completion announcement does not establish a consumer price; corporate financing or projected efficiencies are not a substitute. |
To see whether a subscription fits your budget, add the plans you would actually keep and compare that total with your monthly entertainment limit. If you are considering an annual payment, divide it by 12 for a simple monthly equivalent, but also consider the amount charged upfront and the plan’s cancellation and refund rules. These calculations help compare options; they do not predict what any post-merger plan will cost.
Do not infer that a combined service will cost less, more or the same as the current services. The reviewed merger reporting does not establish the future consumer price, plan structure or whether existing subscriptions will convert automatically.
4. Assess live sports, news and local channels separately
If your main reason for subscribing is live programming, verify the specific rights and channels you need for your market and plan. On-demand libraries and live coverage solve different problems: a service can have a deep film and series catalog without carrying the game, event, local station or news feed you watch.

Skydance identifies live sports among the assets associated with the combined company, but its completion announcement is not a schedule of which events are included in which streaming plans. Check the plan details and current programming information for the service you are considering. If the required live content is not clearly listed, do not count it as a confirmed feature.
5. Check practical fit before committing
A service that has the right title can still be a poor fit if it does not work with your household’s devices, viewing habits or billing preferences. Check current official plan information for supported devices, the number of simultaneous streams, downloads, and cancellation terms. These details can differ by service and plan; the merger announcements do not provide a comprehensive product-by-product feature comparison.
- List the televisions, phones, tablets and other devices people in your household use, then confirm support for each one.
- Estimate how many people may watch at the same time and compare that with the plan’s stated limit.
- If offline viewing matters, confirm whether downloads are available on your chosen plan and device.
- Note how to cancel, when cancellation takes effect and whether you are billed directly or through another provider.
What is known about the services and the proposed unification
The distinctions below help separate announced facts from decisions that remain open. They are not a guarantee that any existing app, plan or catalog will stay unchanged.
| Service or subject | What is established | What is not established by the merger announcements |
|---|---|---|
| Paramount+ | It is among the streaming products brought under the combined ownership. | A final migration date, combined-service name, future consumer price, or title-by-title transfer schedule. |
| HBO Max | It is among the streaming products brought under the combined ownership. David Ellison earlier said, “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO.” | That earlier statement is not a guarantee of the final app or corporate structure. The final product design and consumer terms remain unannounced. |
| Discovery+ | AP’s October 6, 2026 report identifies it among the acquired services. | Its eventual app, catalog, plan or relationship to any unified product. |
| One unified direct-to-consumer service | Skydance says the products will unify into a single service over time. | The name, launch date, price, migration mechanics, plan options and precise content included. |
Skydance reported more than 200 million streaming subscribers across platforms in its 2026 completion announcement. That is a company-reported combined scale figure, not a count of unique households or subscribers to one service. The company also stated commitments or output figures of at least 30 theatrical films annually and more than 180 television shows and series. Those figures describe company scale or production, not an immediate guarantee that those titles will stream in one place, on a particular plan or in every country.
Will Paramount+ and HBO Max become one app?
The owner says its direct-to-consumer streaming products will unify into one service over time, so a single service is the stated direction. The October 6, 2026 completion announcement does not identify a launch date or final name, or explain how current apps, accounts, subscriptions or billing would change. Until the company publishes those details, treat the services as separate for practical decisions and check your account notices before making changes.

AP reported that the consumer implications were still unknown and noted Ellison’s earlier comment that HBO should stay HBO. The comment is relevant context, but it does not settle whether HBO Max will remain a separate app, become a section of a broader service, or take another form.
Will HBO Max get more expensive after the merger?
No post-merger consumer price is established in the completion announcement or AP’s October 6 report. Those sources do not show whether HBO Max’s price will rise, fall or stay the same, or how any eventual unified service will be priced. Check the current price and renewal terms on your account and wait for official terms before treating a future increase or discount as fact.
Do not use the companies’ combined scale, corporate debt, production targets or projected business benefits to estimate a subscription price. Those figures do not tell you what customers will be charged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you cancel HBO Max or Paramount+ now?
Make the decision from your current use and cost rather than the ownership change alone. If you use a service for a title, sport or feature that is available to you now and the cost fits your budget, there is no announced migration date that requires you to cancel it today. If you rarely use it, cannot find a current title you want, or need to reduce expenses, compare its current value with the other subscriptions you pay for.
- Check current viewing. Look at what household members watched recently and which specific upcoming titles or live events they plan to watch.
- Verify present availability. Confirm that the programming you care about is currently on the service in your country, rather than assuming it will arrive after the merger.
- Check the bill and billing source. Record the renewal date, plan, ad terms, and whether a provider or bundle bills you.
- Compare alternatives you already pay for. Cancel only after confirming that another subscription you intend to keep actually includes the programming you need.
- Review account messages before changing anything. If a migration, billing change or new plan is announced, read the specific instructions and effective date rather than inferring what happens from the merger news.
For a household that subscribes to both services, the sensible choice can be to keep both temporarily, keep only the one with current must-watch content, or cancel one and reconsider when an official product announcement changes the options. The key is to base that choice on today’s service terms and your own viewing—not on an unannounced future bundle.

How large is the combined company in the U.S. streaming market?
AP reported on October 6, 2026, that Paramount+ and HBO Max together represented roughly 14% of the U.S. streaming market, citing JustWatch. AP compared that figure with Amazon Prime at 17% and Netflix at 19%. The report does not establish in this account that the measure is subscriber share, so it should not be read as a percentage of subscribers, households or viewing time without confirmation of JustWatch’s methodology. It is market context, not a forecast of a combined service’s price, catalog or quality.
The U.S. Department of Justice reached a separate conclusion about competition. On June 12, 2026, the DOJ Antitrust Division said its review found the proposed transaction was not likely to harm competition or American consumers in subscription video on demand, linear television, or film development, production or distribution. The agency said its eight-month investigation included more than two million documents from over 80 custodians. Those numbers describe the investigation record; they are not measures of market size.
The DOJ’s conclusion is the agency’s assessment based on its investigation, not proof that prices will decline or that every household will have more choice. AP’s report likewise said consumer costs and choices remained unknown. For a subscriber, the practical test is still the actual plan, available programming and terms when making a decision.

A simple decision worksheet
Before you change a subscription, fill in these items using current information from the services and your own account. If you cannot confirm a detail, leave it out of the decision rather than treating it as promised.
- Must-watch titles or live programming: Name the exact content and the household member who wants it.
- Current availability: Confirm service, country, season or event, and date checked.
- Plan that fits: Note the current monthly or annual price, ad status, bundle conditions and renewal terms.
- Use and overlap: Estimate how often the household will watch and whether another subscription already covers the same need.
- Device and household fit: Confirm support, simultaneous viewing and any download requirement on the chosen plan.
- Exit or change terms: Record where the subscription is billed and how its current cancellation or plan-change process works.
- Unannounced merger details: Do not assign a value to a future app, price or catalog until official specifics are published.
This approach remains useful whether the eventual combined service is a single app, a bundle or another arrangement. A larger owner may have more content and production capacity, but neither those assets nor an announced intention to unify services answers the individual questions that determine whether a subscription is worth paying for: what you can watch, where, on which plan and at what current cost.
