Sign in to your personal my Social Security account through SSA.gov and look for your benefit and payment information. That is the Social Security Administration’s official online route for checking your own benefit and payments. The payment schedule is different: it lists payment dates, not a complete itemized record for your account.

If your deposit is lower than the benefit amount you expected, check whether federal tax withholding or a Medicare premium may explain the difference. These are separate: voluntary federal tax withholding is managed through SSA, while Medicare premiums may be taken from a Social Security payment or billed directly by Medicare.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The key is to match the tool to the question. Your account is where to begin for your individual payment information; SSA’s schedule is for expected dates; and a direct Medicare bill is handled separately from SSA’s tax-withholding feature.

What you can—and cannot—learn online

SSA says beneficiaries can use my Social Security to check benefit and payment information. This is the right place to start when you need to review your own payments rather than find out when payments are generally scheduled. SSA describes the account as “your online gateway to Social Security” in its Using Your Account information.

SSA’s public information does not establish a universal number of past years available in every account or a single history layout that all beneficiaries will see. It also does not establish that every account displays the same complete list of deductions. Sign in and check the information available for your benefit; if a payment or adjustment you need is missing or unclear, contact SSA or Medicare as appropriate.

That limit matters when you are trying to answer a specific question. An account feature may let you review benefit and payment information, but that does not promise that every person sees the same dates, fields, labels, or amount of historical detail. Do not assume an item is absent from your record simply because another person describes a different screen. Follow the labels in your own account, and ask SSA about information that is not available or is unclear.

Keep these three kinds of information separate:

  • Your payment information: Account-specific benefit and payment details available through my Social Security. Use this when you want to review your own benefit and payments.
  • The payment schedule: SSA’s calendar for upcoming and past payment dates. It helps answer “when,” but is not an individualized ledger of what was paid or withheld.
  • Withholding or premiums: Adjustments that may affect the amount deposited. Federal voluntary tax withholding is handled through an SSA feature; Medicare premiums may be deducted or billed directly.

These resources answer different questions. A scheduled payment date does not show that a particular person received a particular amount. A bank deposit shows what arrived in that account, but by itself does not identify the reason for a difference from a benefit amount. An SSA account record, where the relevant information is available, is the starting point for reviewing the individual benefit and payment details.

How to check your payment information

  1. Start at SSA.gov. Navigate to the Social Security Administration’s official website yourself and choose the my Social Security sign-in route. Avoid sponsored search results, advertisements, and third-party “benefits checker” pages when entering account credentials. The official account is the route SSA identifies for recipients to check benefit and payment information.
  2. Sign in to your personal account. Existing users follow the sign-in options presented by SSA. New account users currently choose Login.gov or ID.me and complete identity verification. SSA’s account page says you must be at least 18 and have a valid email address to create an account. Sign-in methods and account policies can change; use the current directions on SSA.gov.
  3. Open your benefits and payment information. Look for the account area that provides benefit and payment information. SSA confirms that this information is available, but it does not publish a stable, universal click-by-click menu path or promise a particular history duration, so follow the labels shown in your own account.
  4. Review the dates and amounts shown. Compare the payment information with your bank deposit or other payment record for the same period. Note any difference between the benefit information and the amount received, and check for an explanation such as tax withholding or a Medicare premium. Make sure you are comparing the same payment period rather than a scheduled date with a deposit from another period.
  5. Follow up on gaps or unexplained amounts. If the account does not show the detail you need, or a payment amount still does not make sense, contact SSA. For a Medicare premium that is billed directly rather than withheld, use Medicare’s billing or payment options.

It can help to write down the period or date you are reviewing before signing in. Then keep the question narrow: are you trying to confirm an individual payment, understand its amount, find its expected delivery date, or check an adjustment? Separating those questions can prevent a calendar date from being mistaken for a personal payment record, or a tax-withholding setting from being mistaken for a Medicare bill.

Do not expect the account setup process or account display to be identical indefinitely. SSA’s account information says new users need to choose Login.gov or ID.me and complete identity verification. The current account page should be your authority for the requirements and sign-in steps in effect when you create or access an account.

How to tell what may have reduced your deposit

A benefit amount and the amount deposited are not necessarily the same figure. A deduction can reduce the deposit without changing the date on which SSA schedules payment. Start by identifying whether you are looking at a benefit amount, an account payment record, a scheduled payment date, or a bank deposit; each answers a different question.

When comparing figures, do not treat the difference as proof of a particular deduction. First identify what each figure represents and whether it covers the same payment period. Then check the information available in your account and, if needed, the related Medicare billing information. Federal voluntary tax withholding and Medicare premiums are two specific items to check, but they are not a verified exhaustive list of every possible reason an expected amount and deposit may differ.

Federal voluntary tax withholding

SSA’s Voluntary Tax Withholding (VTW) feature concerns federal income-tax withholding. Through my Social Security, users can check, start, change, or stop their VTW request rate. This is the relevant online feature if you want to review or manage a request to withhold federal tax from benefits. SSA’s FAQ updated June 30, 2025 uses the same “check, start, change, or stop” description.

VTW is voluntary federal tax withholding—not a Medicare premium. If you are unsure whether tax withholding explains a particular deposit, check your account’s available payment and withholding information. If the record does not answer your question, contact SSA rather than assuming a tax amount from the difference alone.

There are two related but distinct questions here. One is whether you have a voluntary federal withholding request and what request rate is recorded; VTW is the SSA feature for checking or managing that. The other is whether the withholding accounts for a particular payment amount. The feature description establishes that the request can be managed online, but it does not guarantee that every account display will provide a complete item-by-item explanation for every payment. Use the information shown in your account and ask SSA when it does not resolve the issue.

Medicare premiums

A Medicare premium may be deducted from a Social Security benefit. If it is not deducted, Medicare bills the person separately. In that case, a Medicare bill or payment record—not an SSA tax-withholding setting—is the place to investigate the direct payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Medicare identifies several ways to pay a bill when premiums are not withheld: online payment, recurring Medicare Easy Pay, bank bill pay, or payment by mail. The fact that Medicare offers direct payment matters when interpreting a deposit: a premium that is paid separately is not necessarily an item withheld from that Social Security payment.

So, if you see a Medicare bill, do not assume the amount was also subtracted from the Social Security deposit. Determine whether the premium is being deducted from the benefit or billed directly, then use the corresponding information: review the Social Security payment information for the benefit payment, or check the Medicare bill and payment route for a separately paid premium. Medicare’s options describe how to pay a direct bill; they do not turn that bill into an SSA tax-withholding item.

When the difference has no clear explanation

Tax withholding and Medicare premiums are two adjustments to check, not a guaranteed exhaustive list of every reason a person’s deposit might differ from an expected amount. Do not infer the cause from a payment date or from a difference in dollar amounts alone. Review the account information and contact SSA if the Social Security payment remains unexplained; contact Medicare about a separately billed Medicare premium.

Also avoid treating the payment schedule as an explanation for an amount. A schedule tells you when SSA lists a payment date, and SSA says timing depends on the beneficiary’s birthday and benefit type. It does not identify the amount deposited or itemize a deduction. If your concern is the date, consult the current schedule; if it is the amount or a possible adjustment, use the personal account and the relevant agency’s information.

Payment history versus the payment calendar

SSA’s payment schedule page lets people check upcoming and past payment dates. The schedule is useful when the question is whether a payment is expected on a particular date. SSA says timing depends on the beneficiary’s birthday and benefit type, and directs readers to the current schedule for the applicable rules. It should not be treated as proof that a specific person received a specific amount, or as a record of that person’s deductions.

The schedule is therefore a reference for timing rather than a substitute for your account information. Looking up a date can help you check when a payment is listed, but the schedule does not establish whether a particular deposit reached your bank, what amount was deposited, or which adjustments applied to your benefit. Those are individual payment questions, not calendar questions.

For an individual payment amount, use your my Social Security account’s benefit and payment information. For an expected delivery date, use SSA’s schedule. If you cannot access the account and your immediate question is when a payment should arrive, SSA lists automated phone help at 1-800-772-1213; say “check delivery.” TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. SSA says automated help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in English and Spanish.

If you cannot sign in or find the record

  • You are setting up an account: Follow SSA’s current account-creation directions and choose Login.gov or ID.me when prompted. The account page currently says new users need to be at least 18 and have a valid email address, and must complete identity verification.
  • You can sign in but do not see the detail you expected: SSA confirms that benefit and payment information is available online, but does not promise a particular lookback period or identical display for everyone. Contact SSA about missing or unclear Social Security payment information.
  • You need a date, not an itemized account record: Consult SSA’s benefit payment schedule. For automated delivery help, call 1-800-772-1213 and say “check delivery,” or use TTY at 1-800-325-0778.
  • You are looking for a Medicare premium paid directly: Check the Medicare bill or payment record and use Medicare’s available payment routes. A direct Medicare bill is distinct from SSA’s voluntary federal tax-withholding feature.
  • You are unsure whether a page is official: Begin at SSA.gov rather than entering account details through an advertisement or third-party benefits tool.

Not seeing a particular deduction on a screen does not by itself show that there was no adjustment; the public SSA feature information does not guarantee that every account presents the same list. Likewise, do not infer that all payment details are missing just because the schedule does not show them: the schedule is a calendar, while personal payment information is in the account. If the record you need is not displayed or the available information does not answer the question, follow up with SSA.

If your issue is specifically a federal tax-withholding request, look for the VTW function in my Social Security. If the issue is a Medicare premium paid directly, review Medicare’s bill or payment record. If it is only a delivery-date question and you cannot get into the account, SSA’s automated phone service can help with “check delivery.” Choosing among these routes is more useful than repeatedly consulting a payment calendar for a deduction explanation.

What to have ready when asking for help

Before contacting an agency, identify the payment period or date you are asking about and the amount you see in your account or deposit record. Be clear about whether the unresolved item is the payment amount, delivery timing, federal tax withholding, or a separately billed Medicare premium. This helps direct the question to the right place: SSA for Social Security benefit and payment information, or Medicare for a direct Medicare bill.

It may also help to describe exactly which sources you compared: the account information, the payment schedule, your deposit record, or a Medicare bill. That makes it easier to explain whether you are asking about a date, an individual payment, a possible withholding request, or a separate premium payment. Keep the payment period consistent when comparing amounts. A date on the schedule and a deposit amount are different kinds of information and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Account display details and sign-in policies may change. SSA’s account access, payment schedule, and withholding information reflected here were current as of October 9, 2026; use the current SSA.gov instructions when you sign in or need a date-specific answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my Social Security payment history online?

Go to SSA.gov, sign in to your personal my Social Security account, and look for your benefit and payment information. SSA confirms that recipients can check this information online, but does not promise a universal history duration or identical account layout for everyone.

Does the Social Security payment schedule show my payment history?

No. SSA’s schedule lists upcoming and past payment dates. It helps answer when a payment is scheduled, but it is not an individualized ledger showing what you received or what was withheld.

Why is my Social Security deposit lower than the benefit amount?

Federal voluntary tax withholding or a Medicare premium may affect the amount deposited. These are two items to check, not a complete list of every possible explanation. Review the information in your account and contact SSA if the payment remains unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I check or change federal tax withholding from my Social Security benefits?

Use the Voluntary Tax Withholding (VTW) feature in my Social Security. SSA says users can check, start, change, or stop their request rate online. VTW concerns federal income-tax withholding, not a Medicare premium.

How do I know whether Medicare was deducted from my Social Security payment?

A Medicare premium may be withheld from a Social Security benefit, or Medicare may bill you separately. Review the available Social Security payment information and, if Medicare bills you directly, check the Medicare bill or payment record.

What if I cannot access my account and only need to know when a payment should arrive?

Use SSA’s current benefit payment schedule. For automated payment-delivery help, call 1-800-772-1213 and say “check delivery.” TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. SSA says automated help is available 24/7 in English and Spanish.

What do I need to create a my Social Security account?

SSA’s account page currently says users must be at least 18 and have a valid email address. New account users choose Login.gov or ID.me and complete identity verification. Check SSA.gov for the current account-creation requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use your my Social Security account to review your own benefit and payment information, SSA’s payment schedule to check dates, and Medicare’s billing information for a premium paid directly. VTW is the online feature for voluntary federal tax withholding. If the account does not explain a payment or adjustment, ask SSA or Medicare rather than guessing from the deposit difference.
