How to Check Your 401(k) Balance, Contributions, and Investment Returns

Use your employer’s retirement-plan portal and statements to review your balance, compare contributions with payroll records, and distinguish investment performance from changes in account value.

Start with the retirement-plan website or app listed in your employer’s enrollment materials, benefits portal, or latest plan statement. Once signed in, look for your account balance, statements, contribution or transaction history, investment performance, and fee information. If you cannot find the account or a deposit, ask your employer’s benefits team or plan administrator how to access the plan and compare the plan’s records with your payroll deductions.

Where to find your 401(k) account

For most participants, the employer’s retirement-plan portal is the first place to check. The employer may link to it from a benefits website, or the plan’s recordkeeper may provide a separate website or app. Your enrollment materials, recent statement, or benefits team can help identify the correct portal. The portal name and menu labels vary by employer and recordkeeper, so there is no single sign-in path that applies to every plan.

After signing in, look for sections labeled with terms such as account, balance, statements, transactions, contributions, or investment performance. Those are examples of labels, not guaranteed menu names. If you cannot find the plan, do not assume that an old login or a search result is the right account. Ask your employer’s benefits team or the plan administrator for the official portal and access instructions. The U.S. Department of Labor’s guidance on 401(k) fees also directs participants to plan materials and the plan administrator for information about their plan.

If you cannot sign in or do not know the recordkeeper

  • Check the benefits portal and enrollment materials for a retirement-plan link, provider name, or contact details.
  • Look at a prior plan statement, if you have one, for the portal or recordkeeper information.
  • Ask your benefits team or plan administrator how to register, recover access, or confirm which account is associated with your employment.

These steps are especially useful when a former employer’s plan is involved or your employer has changed providers. The exact account-recovery process is plan-specific; the plan or recordkeeper must give you the instructions that apply to your account. If you are unsure whether you have reached the right site, confirm the provider through employer materials or the plan administrator before entering account information.

Once you have access, take note of how the portal organizes information. A statement may be a downloadable document, while recent deposits or fees may appear in a separate transaction list. A performance figure may be shown on an investment page rather than beside the balance. Checking each relevant section is more reliable than assuming the summary screen contains every detail.

What to check on a statement and account page

A statement is more than a balance snapshot. The Department of Labor’s publication What You Should Know About Your Retirement Plan says a statement may include salary level, amounts contributed by you and your employer, investment performance, and other participant information. Review the statement and account details for accuracy rather than relying on the headline balance alone.

Information What to look for Why it matters
Account balance The value shown for the account and the date it represents. It tells you the account’s stated value at that point in time, but not by itself how much came from deposits versus investment gains or losses.
Employee contributions Deposits attributed to your contributions, including the dates or pay periods shown in transaction history. These records can be compared with the retirement deductions on your pay statements.
Employer contributions Any employer deposits listed separately from your own contributions. Separating the two makes it easier to see which source a deposit came from.
Investment performance The plan’s displayed performance information and the dates or measurement period attached to it. It helps distinguish investment results from the movement of the total account balance.
Fees and expenses Investment-related costs and any administrative or individual fees shown in plan materials or account records. Fees affect account value and are disclosed in plan materials and, in participant-directed plans, information about fees actually charged to an account.
Personal and plan details Participant information and other account details shown on the statement. Incorrect details may need to be corrected through the plan or employer.

The Department of Labor advises participants: “When you receive a statement, check it to make sure all of the information is accurate.” The statement is a useful review document, but if a line item is unclear, ask the plan administrator what it represents rather than guessing from the label.

When you review a statement, first identify its closing date or the period it covers. Then distinguish information about a single date, such as an ending balance, from activity over a period, such as contributions, fees, or investment performance. These figures answer different questions. An ending balance is not a record of every deposit, and a contribution total for a quarter is not an investment-return percentage.

It can help to keep a simple record of the statement date, ending balance, employee contributions, employer contributions, and any fee or performance details you are checking. That gives you a clear reference point for the next statement and helps you describe a discrepancy precisely. Use the dates and labels supplied by your plan, since the format and level of detail may differ among recordkeepers.

How to check that contributions reached the account

To check a deposit, compare what your payroll record says was deducted with the transaction history or contribution details in the plan account. The plan may display contributions by date, pay period, or source; the format depends on the recordkeeper. Check employee and employer contributions separately, since they are distinct entries.

  1. Choose a pay period. Open the pay statement for the period you want to verify and note the retirement-plan deduction. Use the same period when reviewing the plan account.
  2. Open the plan’s contribution or transaction history. Find the entry or entries associated with that period, if available. Check whether the displayed amount is identified as an employee contribution or an employer contribution.
  3. Compare like with like. Compare your payroll deduction with the corresponding employee-contribution record. Do not treat an employer contribution as part of your payroll deduction or assume the two sources will appear as one entry.
  4. Check the dates and account period. The payroll date and the date a plan transaction appears may not be displayed in the same way. If you cannot match an entry, ask the plan administrator or benefits team which dates and records to compare.
  5. Raise an unresolved difference. Give the benefits team or administrator the pay period, payroll deduction, and account entry you are asking about. Ask what the plan shows and what additional information is needed to investigate.

The guidance does not establish one contribution-posting deadline or a standard delay that applies to every plan. If an expected deposit is not visible, confirm the plan’s process with the administrator instead of assuming that a particular number of days is normal. The Department of Labor recommends checking statement information for accuracy; comparing payroll records with the account’s transaction history is a practical way to investigate a contribution question.

For a clearer comparison, work through one pay period at a time instead of comparing a whole year of payroll deductions with a single account balance. Note the payroll deduction, the plan transaction that appears to correspond to it, and any employer contribution listed separately. If the portal groups several transactions together or labels them by a different date, do not force a match based only on the amount. Ask the administrator how the plan records and displays contributions.

A missing entry in the portal does not by itself establish what happened. There may be a difference between the way payroll and the plan label a period, or the records may need explanation or correction. Share the specific pay statement and plan transaction details with the benefits team or administrator and ask them to trace the item. Keep a note of the date you asked and any next steps they provide.

How to understand your balance and investment returns

Your balance is the account’s value on a particular date. It can change because of contributions, investment gains or losses, and fees. That means a higher balance does not tell you, on its own, how well the investments performed: deposits can raise the balance even when investments lose value, and fees can reduce it even when investments gain value.

For investment performance, use the return information supplied by the plan or its investment materials, and note the period it covers. Compare figures only when the beginning and ending dates match. A return shown for one period cannot be compared directly with a balance change measured over another period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why balance growth is not a formal return

Subtracting an earlier balance from a later balance gives the change in account value, not automatically the investment return. The calculation does not account for when contributions entered the account, withdrawals if any, or fees. For example, an account can rise because new money was deposited, not because existing investments earned that amount. The Department of Labor’s A Look At 401(k) Plan Fees explains that contributions, investment performance, and fees all affect the benefits in a 401(k) account.

Do not label the leftover amount after subtracting contributions from a balance change as a formal rate of return unless the calculation method and dates are clearly defined. For a straightforward review, use the plan’s own investment-performance figure and its stated measurement period. If the portal’s figure is unclear, ask the recordkeeper or plan administrator how it is calculated and what dates it covers.

A practical way to review performance

  1. Find the plan’s investment-performance information or the performance section of a statement.
  2. Write down the period and dates attached to the figure.
  3. When reviewing another figure, confirm that it covers the same dates and uses a comparable measure.
  4. Keep the account balance separate from the performance figure; the balance includes the effects of contributions and fees as well as investment results.

This process helps answer the recordkeeping question—what the plan reports for a given period—without turning a changing account balance into an unsupported return calculation or a prediction of future results.

For example, suppose you compare two statement balances several months apart and see that the later one is higher. That observation tells you the account value increased between the statement dates, but it does not show how much came from new employee deposits, employer deposits, investment results, or fees. If the plan reports investment performance for the same interval, use that figure for the performance question and the balance for the account-value question. Keep the dates aligned: a quarterly performance figure and a balance comparison spanning a different set of dates are not a like-for-like comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the plan displays several performance periods, such as multiple date ranges, make sure you understand which one you are reading before comparing it with another figure. The plan’s investment materials or administrator can clarify what a displayed number represents. Avoid inferring a future result from a past period or treating a plan display as a personalized projection; the purpose here is to understand the account records.

When statements and fee information are available

Statement timing and fee disclosures are related but not identical. The Department of Labor says defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s generally must provide individual benefit statements quarterly when participants direct their investments and annually when they do not. The plan’s own statement and delivery preferences can clarify how its process works.

This cadence is a general rule, not a promise that a statement will appear on a particular date or in a particular format. Check whether your plan provides statements electronically, by mail, or through the portal, and review the delivery preferences or plan materials for the process that applies to you. If you expected a statement and cannot locate it, ask the plan administrator where statements are provided and what period the latest one covers.

For participant-directed plans, information about the plan and its investments, including fees and expenses, is provided before a participant first directs investments and generally annually thereafter. Information about administrative or individual fees actually charged to a participant’s account is provided at least quarterly. Those fee disclosures do not necessarily mean that every statement contains every plan or investment detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fee information may be in investment materials, a benefit statement, the Summary Plan Description, or the plan’s Annual Report (Form 5500). These documents can serve different purposes, so use the one that answers your question: a statement may show fees charged to your account, while plan or investment materials may describe fees and expenses more generally. If you cannot tell whether a figure is a fee, what it applies to, or whether it was charged to your account, ask the plan administrator to explain it.

Looking at fees alongside performance can help you understand factors that affect account value, but the records should still be read separately. Investment performance describes the plan’s stated investment result for a period; fees are costs that may affect the account. Do not assume a fee line is an investment loss or treat a broad plan disclosure as proof that a particular amount was charged to your account. Check the dates and wording on the relevant statement or disclosure.

What to do if information looks wrong or is missing

Start by identifying the exact record that raises the question. A specific pay period, transaction, statement date, or fee entry is more useful to the administrator than a general report that the balance seems wrong. Keep relevant pay statements and plan records together so you can describe the discrepancy clearly.

  • A payroll deduction is missing from account history: Compare the pay period and amount, then ask the benefits team or plan administrator to explain the plan’s posting process and investigate the record.
  • A statement amount or personal detail appears incorrect: Point to the affected line or detail and ask how to request a correction.
  • A fee is unfamiliar: Ask which plan or investment disclosure describes it and whether it is an amount charged to your account.
  • A performance number is unclear: Ask what dates and measurement the number covers, and whether the figure is for an investment, the account, or another period.

Keep the question focused on records and definitions. A plan administrator can explain the information and direct you to the relevant plan material; do not infer a cause or a required correction from a portal label alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before contacting the administrator, gather the information that makes the question verifiable: the statement date, the pay period, the amount deducted from payroll, the transaction or fee entry in question, and the screen or document where you saw it. You do not need to make your own estimate of a formal return or decide what the plan should have done. Ask what records the plan has, how the item is labeled, and what information is needed to review a possible mismatch.

If the first person you contact cannot answer, ask whether the plan administrator or another benefits contact handles account records, statements, or contribution questions. The appropriate contact and process depend on the employer’s plan. Keep copies of relevant documents and follow the plan’s instructions for requesting clarification or a correction.

A Department of Labor fee example is not a personal forecast

The Department of Labor’s fee FAQ gives a hypothetical illustration in which $25,000 grows to $227,000 over 35 years until retirement, assuming average investment returns of 7%, fees and expenses reduce average returns by 0.5 percentage points, and there are no further contributions. The page does not state a publication year for the example. It illustrates how fees can affect long-term accumulation under those assumptions; it is not a forecast, an expected result, or an estimate of what an individual participant will have.

The example is specific to its stated starting balance, time horizon, return assumption, fee reduction, and assumption of no additional contributions. Changing those assumptions changes the illustration, so the $227,000 figure should not be used as a benchmark for your own balance or as a prediction of an account’s future value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For your own account review, rely on the balance, transaction history, performance information, and fee disclosures associated with your plan. The illustration should not be substituted for those account-specific records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I see my 401(k) balance?

Start with the retirement-plan website or app named in your employer’s enrollment materials, benefits portal, or recent statement. After signing in, look for an account or balance section. If you cannot identify the right portal, ask your benefits team or plan administrator; provider names and menu paths vary by plan.

How do I check whether my 401(k) contributions went in?

Compare the retirement deduction on a pay statement for a chosen pay period with the employee-contribution entry in the plan’s transaction or contribution history. Check employer contributions separately, and ask the plan administrator or benefits team to explain any entry you cannot match.

What should I do if a payroll deduction is not visible in my account?

Note the pay period and deduction amount, then compare those details with the plan’s transaction history. Because posting schedules and date labels vary, do not assume a particular delay is standard. Contact the plan administrator or benefits team with the specific records and ask them to investigate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my 401(k) balance change if my investments did not perform the same amount?

The balance reflects contributions, investment gains or losses, and fees. Deposits can increase the account value independently of investment performance, while fees can reduce it. Use the plan’s performance information for investment results and the balance for the account value on its stated date.

How often should I receive a 401(k) statement?

The Department of Labor says defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s generally provide individual benefit statements quarterly when participants direct investments and annually when they do not. Check your plan’s delivery preferences and materials for its process.

Where can I find 401(k) fee information?

Look in plan and investment materials, benefit statements, the Summary Plan Description, or the plan’s Annual Report (Form 5500). In participant-directed plans, information about administrative or individual fees actually charged to an account is provided at least quarterly. Ask the plan administrator if you cannot tell what a fee entry means.

Does the Department of Labor’s $227,000 example predict what my account will be worth?

No. It is a hypothetical illustration based on a $25,000 starting balance, 35 years, average returns of 7%, fees reducing average returns by 0.5 percentage points, and no further contributions. It is not an individual forecast or expected result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use your employer’s plan portal and statements to review the balance, employee and employer contributions, investment performance, and fees. Compare contribution records with payroll deductions, align dates when reviewing performance, and contact the plan administrator or benefits team when an entry is missing or unclear. A balance change is not automatically an investment return.
