How to Check Whether You Qualify for a Student Loan Interest Rate Discount

The temporary federal student loan rate reduction depends on the loan—not just your account. Check the Direct Loan program, date, repayment status, and servicer auto-pay enrollment for each loan.

For the temporary federal student loan interest rate reduction, check each loan—not just your overall account. The reduction applies to eligible Federal Direct Loans that meet the date requirement, and you must enroll in auto pay through your servicer and continue repayment. Federal Student Aid and older servicer pages may still show the original September 30, 2026 enrollment deadline; the Education Department later extended the enrollment period, so use its later announcement for the operative date.

Check your eligibility loan by loan

A single student loan account can contain loans with different programs, dates, servicers, and repayment statuses. Qualifying for the temporary reduction on one loan does not establish that every loan in the account qualifies. Treat each loan as a separate eligibility check, even when several appear together on one account page or are included in one monthly bill.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. List every loan separately. Sign in to your loan servicer account and record each loan’s program, origination or disbursement date shown in the account, repayment status, and auto-pay status. If your federal loans are listed in StudentAid.gov, use that information to identify the program, then confirm loan-level details with the servicer that handles payments. If loans have different servicers, you may need to do this more than once.
  2. Identify the loan program. The temporary federal reduction is for eligible Federal Direct Loans. Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans, Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) Program loans, and Federal Perkins Loans are excluded from this additional reduction, according to Federal Student Aid. A federal loan is not automatically eligible just because it is federal; check its specific program.
  3. Check the date for each Direct Loan. The Education Department describes eligible Direct Loans as those originated after July 1, 2012. Its announcements also refer to the date criterion in terms of loans originated or disbursed on or after July 1, 2012. If your loan’s record is close to that cutoff or the displayed dates are unclear, ask your servicer to confirm whether that specific loan meets the Department’s criterion. Do not use the date of another loan in the account as a substitute.
  4. Confirm that the loan is in repayment and enroll in auto pay. Enrollment is handled by the servicer, not by making a one-time payment or changing a bank setting. The Department defines auto pay as an optional feature in which the servicer automatically deducts the monthly student loan payment from a checking or savings account.
  5. Check the enrollment deadline in the later Department notice. The Department extended the initial enrollment period. Do not treat September 30, 2026, still shown on older guidance, as the current deadline; consult the later Department announcement for the operative date.
  6. Ask which loans will actually receive the adjustment. Have the servicer confirm eligibility and the rate shown for each loan, especially if your account includes mixed programs, older loans, a consolidation, or loans not currently in repayment. A general confirmation that auto pay is active is not the same as confirmation that every loan is eligible for this rate reduction.

Use this loan-by-loan eligibility screen

What to check What supports eligibility What to do if it does not match
Loan program An eligible Federal Direct Loan FFEL, HEAL, and Perkins loans are excluded from this federal reduction. Ask the servicer to identify any loan whose program is unclear.
Loan date The Education Department’s date criterion is a Direct Loan originated after July 1, 2012; its announcements also describe the cutoff as on or after that date for loans originated or disbursed. Ask the servicer to apply the Department’s criterion to the specific origination or disbursement record.
Repayment and auto pay The loan is being repaid and auto pay is enrolled through its servicer. Complete enrollment with the servicer and confirm the enrollment applies to the individual eligible loan or loans.
Deadline Enrollment is completed within the period set by the Department’s later extension notice. Use that later notice; older pages displaying September 30, 2026, reflect the initial deadline.
Type of discount The rate adjustment is the temporary federal reduction. For a private student loan, check the lender’s contract and current disclosures instead; this federal eligibility screen does not determine private-loan discounts.

This screen is a way to organize the questions, not a guarantee for a mixed account. The servicer’s loan-level confirmation is important where a borrower has loans from different programs or dates. You can also keep a simple comparison list with one row per loan and columns for its program, relevant date, servicer, repayment status, auto-pay status, and the type of discount being discussed. This makes it easier to spot a loan that needs a separate answer.

What the federal reduction changes—and what it does not

The Education Department announced a temporary reduction of one percentage point in the interest rate for eligible borrowers using auto pay, beginning July 1, 2026. It describes the benefit as lasting through June 30, 2028, while the borrower remains enrolled in auto pay and continues repayment. This is a temporary reduction to the rate; it is not a permanent rewrite of the loan’s original note rate.

The condition is ongoing, not merely an enrollment checkbox. Keep the servicer’s auto-pay arrangement active and continue repayment to remain eligible while the temporary benefit is available. If auto pay is canceled or payments stop, contact the servicer to find out how that affects the adjustment on your loans. Do not assume that signing up once permanently locks in a lower rate regardless of what happens later.

The one-percentage-point figure describes a reduction in the interest rate, not a stated dollar amount of savings for every borrower. The amount a borrower saves is not given as a universal figure, and this rate adjustment should not be confused with a promise that a particular monthly payment will fall by a particular amount. Ask the servicer what rate is being applied to each eligible loan and review the loan-level account details.

Enroll through the servicer and verify the result

Auto-pay enrollment is account-specific. The exact screens and labels vary by servicer, so use the servicer’s own account or contact channel rather than assuming a single federal website path applies to every borrower.

  1. Sign in to the servicer for the loan. If different loans have different servicers, repeat the check for each one. Confirm that you are looking at the loan for which you want to verify eligibility, rather than assuming a setting shown for one servicer applies to another.
  2. Find the servicer’s automatic payment or auto-pay enrollment setting. Review the servicer’s instructions and the payment account requirements before submitting enrollment. The federal description of auto pay is a monthly withdrawal from a designated checking or savings account.
  3. Choose an eligible checking or savings account and complete the authorization. Confirm that the bank account information is accurate and that the authorization is submitted, not just saved as a draft. Auto pay is an arrangement made with the loan servicer; simply having enough money in a bank account or setting up a recurring transfer yourself is not the same thing.
  4. Check the confirmation and effective date. Verify that the servicer shows active auto pay and determine when the first automatic withdrawal is scheduled. Keep making required payments as directed until the servicer confirms the automatic payment is active; do not assume enrollment has already replaced a payment that is due.
  5. Review loan-level details after enrollment. Ask which Direct Loans are receiving the temporary reduction and what rate is being applied. Save the confirmation and any message that identifies the covered loans. If the account shows auto pay but not the adjusted rate, ask whether there is another condition to complete or whether the change has not yet been reflected.

EdFinancial Services describes auto pay as a monthly withdrawal from a designated checking or savings account. Other servicers may use different screens or wording, but the relevant confirmation is that the payment servicer has accepted the enrollment and identifies the covered loan or loans.

When you contact a servicer, make the questions specific. Provide or identify the loan you mean, ask whether it is a qualifying Direct Loan, and ask whether the one-percentage-point temporary adjustment is being applied to that loan. If the representative answers only about your account overall, ask for confirmation by loan. This is especially useful where a monthly payment combines several loans or where some loans are held by a different servicer.

What to do when your account is mixed or unclear

You have both older and newer Direct Loans

Do not assume the newest loan’s date applies to the older ones, or vice versa. Record the date for every loan and ask the servicer to confirm eligibility individually. A loan that fails the date criterion does not, by itself, establish that a separate loan in the same account is ineligible. The relevant comparison is between each loan’s own program and date and the Department’s stated criteria.

Your account includes FFEL, HEAL, or Perkins loans

Those programs are not eligible for this additional federal reduction. If the account also contains eligible Direct Loans, ask whether the servicer can identify which loans qualify rather than treating the account as one undivided balance. Do not assume that enrolling the account in auto pay converts an excluded program loan into an eligible Direct Loan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You have a consolidation or cannot find the original loan date

Do not infer eligibility from the date you last made a payment, the date you entered repayment, or the date displayed for a different loan. Ask the servicer which date it uses to evaluate the loan under the Department’s rule and whether the specific loan qualifies. If the date shown is ambiguous, request a loan-level explanation rather than relying on a general account date.

You are not sure auto pay is active

Look for an active-enrollment status and an upcoming automatic payment in the servicer account. If the status is pending, canceled, or absent, contact the servicer. Keep track of payments due while the status is unresolved, and ask whether the rate adjustment has been applied to each qualifying loan. The fact that a payment was once withdrawn automatically does not by itself confirm that the current enrollment remains active.

The deadline pages disagree

The initial Department announcement set an enrollment deadline, which was later extended. Federal Student Aid and servicer pages may still display the earlier September 30, 2026 date. Follow the Department’s later extension announcement for the current deadline rather than relying on a page that has not incorporated the update. The Department’s June 18, 2026 announcement was the initial release; the later announcement is the one to consult for the extended enrollment period. Do not infer the new deadline from an older page or from the benefit’s June 30, 2028 end date.

The servicer says the account is enrolled, but you cannot tell which loans qualify

Ask for the covered loans by name or account-level identifier and confirm the rate adjustment on each one. A servicer may accept an auto-pay authorization for an account that includes loans with different programs or dates; enrollment alone does not answer whether all of those loans meet the federal eligibility test. Keep the confirmation with your loan records so you can compare it with later account details.

Private student loans follow different rules

The federal checklist does not establish eligibility for a private student loan. A private lender’s auto-pay discount depends on the loan contract and the lender’s current servicing terms. Read the promissory note and current lender disclosures, and ask the lender to confirm the conditions, rate adjustment, and what happens if auto pay ends.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau supervisory materials describe private auto-pay discounts as lender policies and document cases in which the loan terms and eligibility representations matter. For a private loan, a general statement that the lender offers an auto-pay discount is not enough: confirm that the offer applies to your particular loan and that you satisfy its terms. Do not assume that the federal one-percentage-point reduction, its eligibility rules, or its dates apply to a private loan.

Refinancing a federal loan into a private loan is a separate borrowing decision. It does not make the loan eligible for this federal reduction, and the federal auto-pay benefit should not be treated as a reason to give up federal loan status. Check the terms of any private loan separately; do not confuse a lender’s contractual discount with the temporary federal adjustment.

Questions to ask your servicer

  • Is this specific loan a Direct Loan eligible for the temporary federal reduction?
  • Which date on the loan record determines whether it meets the July 1, 2012 cutoff?
  • Is the loan currently in repayment, and is auto pay active for it?
  • Has the temporary one-percentage-point adjustment been applied to this loan? If not, what requirement remains?
  • What is the current enrollment deadline under the Department’s later extension notice?
  • If auto pay is interrupted or a payment is missed, how will that affect the rate adjustment?
  • Does my auto-pay authorization cover each loan I have with this servicer, or only specified loans?
  • What rate is currently shown for each loan that you say qualifies?

Sources and date-sensitive details

The U.S. Department of Education announced the temporary reduction on June 18, 2026, and later announced an extension of the enrollment period. Federal Student Aid’s repayment guidance describes the eligible loan categories and the ongoing auto-pay and repayment conditions, although older versions still show the initial deadline. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2024 supervisory report addresses private lender auto-pay discounts. Because the enrollment date was extended after the first announcement, use the Department’s later notice—not an older page—for the deadline that applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I qualify for the student loan interest rate discount?

You may qualify for the temporary federal reduction if the specific loan is an eligible Direct Loan that meets the Department’s July 1, 2012 date criterion, is being repaid, and has active auto pay through its servicer. Check each loan separately and confirm the result with the servicer.

How do I get the student loan auto-pay discount?

Enroll in automatic payments through the servicer that handles the loan, using a designated checking or savings account, then confirm that enrollment is active and that the temporary adjustment applies to the eligible loan. Continue repayment and use the extended deadline in the Department’s later announcement.

Do FFEL, HEAL, and Perkins loans qualify for the federal reduction?

No. Federal Student Aid identifies FFEL Program, HEAL Program, and Federal Perkins Loans as excluded from this additional temporary federal reduction. A mixed account may still contain separate Direct Loans that qualify, so ask the servicer about each loan.

Does every loan in my account receive the discount if I enroll in auto pay?

Not necessarily. Eligibility is loan-specific. Different loans can have different programs, dates, servicers, and repayment statuses, so ask which individual loans receive the rate adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the discount permanent, and when does it end?

No. The Department describes a temporary one-percentage-point rate reduction beginning July 1, 2026, and lasting through June 30, 2028, while the borrower remains enrolled in auto pay and continues repayment. It does not permanently change the loan’s original note rate.

What if official pages show different auto-pay enrollment deadlines?

The later Education Department extension announcement supersedes the initial deadline. Some older Federal Student Aid or servicer pages still show September 30, 2026; consult the later Department notice for the operative date.

Do private student loans get this federal auto-pay reduction?

No. Private loan discounts are determined by the lender’s contract and current servicing terms. Check the promissory note and disclosures and ask the lender whether its discount applies to your particular loan.

The Bottom Line

Check the program and date for each loan, enroll in auto pay with the loan’s servicer, continue repayment, and confirm which loans receive the temporary reduction. Use the Education Department’s later deadline announcement; the original September 30, 2026 date still appearing on older pages is not the extended deadline.
