Check the store’s payment or help page for the exact wallet name, then look for that wallet’s button or logo on the product page or checkout. Apple says its button, a listing as a payment method, or its symbol indicate places where Apple Pay can be used online; Google Pay is available when an app or website offers it as a payment method. A wallet’s presence is useful evidence for that purchase, but it does not guarantee it will work with every device, browser, region, or payment card.
How to check before entering payment details
- Read the store’s payment information. Open its FAQ, payment-method page, or checkout help page and search for the exact name, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. A generic “secure checkout” badge does not identify which wallets the store accepts.
- Look for the wallet’s own button or logo. Check the product page and checkout. Apple identifies its button, a payment-method listing, or Apple Pay symbol as signs of online acceptance. Google Pay says you can use a saved payment method when the app or website offers Google Pay. See Apple’s guidance on where to use Apple Pay and Google Pay’s app and website payment instructions.
- Confirm the checkout context. If the option is missing, consider whether your device, browser, country or region, and wallet setup are supported. Try another supported device or browser if practical, or ask the merchant.
- Keep a backup payment method available. A visible wallet option does not guarantee that your particular card or transaction will be accepted. Wait for the order confirmation before treating the purchase as complete.
Why a wallet option may not appear
Device and wallet setup
Merchant acceptance and shopper eligibility are different things. Apple’s developer guidance explains that canMakePayments checks whether a device can make payments, not whether the user has an eligible payment credential in Wallet; a separate check can report credential status. As a result, a merchant may support Apple Pay even when the option is not displayed for a particular shopper or device. See Apple’s canMakePayments documentation.

Browser and region
Wallet availability can depend on both browser and market. Apple documents browser and region conditions for online Apple Pay, while GOV.UK Pay’s supported-browser documentation gives examples of device and browser requirements in a payment integration. Check the relevant provider’s current guidance for your setup rather than treating a missing button in one browser as proof that the store never accepts the wallet. See Apple’s Apple Pay availability information and GOV.UK Pay’s browser and device documentation.

Card network and eligible card
Apple notes that the merchant must accept both Apple Pay and the payment network used by the card in Wallet. The wallet can therefore be supported while a particular card is not usable for that purchase. Check the merchant’s accepted payment information or try another eligible card.

Online and in-store acceptance are not the same
An in-store contactless symbol indicates contactless acceptance at a physical terminal; it does not by itself show that the store’s website accepts Apple Pay. For an online purchase, look for an online wallet listing, symbol, or checkout button.
Apple Pay in a third-party browser
On eligible setups, Apple says iPhone and iPad users can use Apple Pay on participating websites in compatible third-party browsers by scanning a code with their device. Availability depends on system version and market, and the merchant must support the flow. Apple describes the QR-code handoff and authorization process in its merchant guidance for Apple Pay. If you do not see a conventional Apple Pay button, check whether the site offers this option and whether your device and region qualify.

What to compare when choosing a wallet for a purchase
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Merchant support | The store explicitly lists or displays the specific wallet, not merely a card network or unrelated wallet. |
| Device and browser | Your current device and browser qualify for the provider’s checkout flow. |
| Country or region | The wallet and relevant online payment feature are available where you are shopping. |
| Payment credential | Your wallet contains an eligible payment method, and the merchant accepts its card network where applicable. |
| Checkout flow | The payment can be completed on the current device or requires a redirect, QR scan, or companion device. |
If you still cannot tell
Use the merchant’s own payment list as your first reference, then contact the merchant if its information is unclear. Google directs order questions to the merchant. If the wallet does not show up, testing a supported device or browser can help distinguish a compatibility issue from the store’s available checkout options. The wallet provider’s current help pages can clarify eligibility, but they cannot confirm a particular merchant’s live checkout configuration.
