It works only when the merchant supports that wallet and your card, device, and region are eligible.
How to pay with a digital wallet at checkout
- Look for a wallet button. At checkout, choose Apple Pay or Google Pay if it appears. The merchant must support the wallet and accept the payment method you select. Apple’s purchase instructions and Google’s online checkout instructions describe their respective flows.
- Review the payment and order details. Check which saved card or other payment method is selected, along with the billing address, shipping address, and contact information. Google’s flow may ask you to select a saved payment method and shipping address.
- Authenticate or confirm. Follow the prompt on your device. Apple’s supported-device flow may use Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode; the available method depends on your device and setup.
- Save the merchant’s order confirmation. Keep the confirmation and order details for delivery, returns, or refund questions.
Why a wallet button may not work for you
A digital wallet is a checkout option, not a payment method accepted everywhere. The merchant must display the wallet and accept the card or other method attached to it. Your card must also be added to the wallet and eligible for the wallet, issuer, payment network, and region. Check the wallet and contact your card issuer if the payment method is missing or rejected. Apple’s participating banks and card issuers page and Google’s supported payment methods information can help you check eligibility; the merchant’s checkout is the practical test of whether it accepts the wallet.

Compatibility can depend on your location, card, device, browser, and the merchant’s setup. Do not assume that a wallet available on one device or website will appear at every checkout.

Apple Pay
Apple says that for Apple Pay online purchases, “Your actual card number is never shared with merchants, and each transaction uses a unique security code.” That describes Apple Pay’s card-number handling; it does not mean every payment risk is eliminated. Google Pay virtual card numbers
Some eligible Google Pay users can use a virtual card number for certain online or in-app payments. It replaces the actual number shared with the merchant, but it is not available for every saved card: support depends on select banks, networks, and regions, and some merchants opt out. Check the payment details shown for your own card rather than assuming a virtual number will be used. Google’s virtual card information describes eligibility and use.
Refunds, incorrect charges, and subscriptions
Orders, returns, and refunds
Contact the merchant for delivery problems, returns, or a refund. Google says, “Google doesn’t hold or process your funds”: a Google Pay transaction is between the merchant and the institution that issued the payment method. Google does not initiate or track refunds or manage disputes or chargebacks. Google’s guidance on purchases and refunds explains the roles involved.

Unresolved or incorrect charges
If the merchant does not resolve an incorrect charge and money has left your account, contact the card issuer or financial institution that issued the payment method to ask about its dispute or chargeback process. Keep your receipt, order confirmation, and any communication with the merchant.

Apple Pay preauthorized payments
Apple says you can revoke an Apple Pay payment authorization, but “Revoking the payment authorization doesn’t cancel your service.” If you want to end a subscription or other service, cancel it with the merchant as well as handling the payment authorization. Paying with Apple Pay from another device
For some supported third-party browsers and websites, Apple documents a cross-device flow: choose Apple Pay on the browsing device, scan the code with an iPhone or iPad, review the payment details on that Apple device, and authenticate there. This option is limited to supported websites and regions, so it is not a universal workaround when Apple Pay is missing. - Whether your card and region are eligible.
- Which device and authentication steps the checkout requires.
- What card-data protections the wallet provider documents for that payment.
- Whether the merchant or your card issuer is the right contact for an order issue or charge dispute.
