You’ll need the taxpayer’s Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount shown on the return. Check after the IRS’s wait period for your filing method: 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return, three or four days after e-filing a prior-year return, or four weeks after mailing a paper return.
Check your refund with the IRS’s official tracker
Where’s My Refund? is the IRS status tool for a standard individual income tax refund. It lets you see whether the IRS has received the return, approved the refund, or sent it. The IRS also offers standard refund status through IRS2Go, an Individual Online Account, and its automated refund-status line at 800-829-1954.

Start at IRS.gov and open the official Where’s My Refund? page, rather than following an unexpected text, email, or social-media message. Avoid lookalike refund-status websites and unsolicited requests for tax or bank-account credentials. The IRS’s refund status service is a way to check information about a return you filed; it is not a reason to share sensitive details with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Have the return details ready
- The taxpayer’s Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
- The filing status used on the return.
- The exact refund amount on the filed return, entered in whole dollars.
Select the relevant tax year, then enter the requested details. Use the amount from the return as filed; an estimate, a rounded amount that differs from the return, or an amount from a different tax year can keep the tool from matching the return. If you filed jointly, use the information associated with the return rather than trying alternate details. Once the tool finds the return, read the status and any personalized date it displays.

When the tracker should have information
| How you filed | When to check for status | Typical refund timing |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year return filed electronically | Generally within 24 hours after e-filing | About three weeks for e-filed returns; most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but this is not a guarantee |
| Prior-year return filed electronically | Generally three or four days after e-filing | About three weeks for e-filed returns; most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but this is not a guarantee |
| Paper return mailed to the IRS | Allow four weeks before checking | Six or more weeks from IRS receipt is typical |
The status-availability intervals come from the IRS’s Where’s My Refund? guidance, accessed in 2026. The typical processing estimates come from the IRS refund hub, also accessed in 2026. These figures answer different questions: when a return may first show up in the tracker is not the same as how long it may take to process and issue a refund. A tracker may show that a return has been received before the refund is approved or issued.
For most people, electronic filing offers earlier visibility into status and the IRS says typical receipt is about three weeks for e-filed returns. Mailed returns generally take longer: allow four weeks before expecting a status in the tool, and six or more weeks from IRS receipt is a typical refund-processing estimate. These are general estimates, not promised dates for an individual return. The IRS also says most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but some take longer.
Understand the three status stages
The tracker moves through three stages. Each answers a different question, so a status that has not advanced does not necessarily mean something is wrong. The IRS updates the status once a day, usually overnight. Checking several times during the same day will not cause the return to be processed sooner or produce a newer status.

Return Received
The IRS has received the return and is processing it. This is not confirmation that the refund has been approved or sent. If you see this stage, the return is in the system; the next step is to wait for processing and check again after a later daily update.
Refund Approved
The IRS has processed the return and approved a refund. The tracker may then provide a personalized refund date. The IRS says, “Where’s My Refund? will give you a personalized refund date after we process your return and approve your refund.” That date is more useful for planning than the general processing estimates, but it should not be confused with a guarantee that a bank has posted a deposit or the postal service has delivered a check.

Refund Sent
The IRS has issued the refund. If it has not arrived, the payment may still be in transit or, for a direct deposit, not yet posted by the financial institution. “Sent” describes the IRS’s action, not necessarily the moment the money becomes available to you. For a check, the IRS says to allow up to four weeks after issuance before taking further action. If the refund remains missing after the applicable wait, use the IRS refund hub’s current trace instructions; the procedure depends on filing status and whether the IRS issued a check or direct deposit.
What to do if no status appears
- Check that enough time has passed. Use the wait period for the tax year and filing method in the table above. A current-year e-filed return generally appears within 24 hours, a prior-year e-filed return in three or four days, and a paper return after four weeks. If you check earlier, no information may be available yet.
- Re-enter the return details carefully. Confirm that the SSN or ITIN, filing status, tax year, and whole-dollar refund amount match the filed return. An entry that does not match can prevent the service from locating the return.
- Allow for normal processing. The IRS refund hub estimates typical receipt at about three weeks for e-filed returns and six or more weeks for mailed returns. Most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but that is an expectation for most refunds rather than a deadline for every return. A return may appear in the tool well before it reaches the approval or sent stage.
- Watch for an IRS letter if more information is needed. Errors, missing information, or additional review can delay processing. The IRS says it will contact taxpayers by mail when it needs more information. Keep an eye out for correspondence and follow the instructions in an actual IRS notice rather than trying to resolve a question based only on a general status message.
- Use an official alternative channel if appropriate. IRS2Go and an Individual Online Account are official options for standard refund status; the automated line is 800-829-1954. An online account can also provide refund status and other tax records. Phone or walk-in staff may not be able to research a standard refund immediately: the 2025 Form 1040 instructions say they can research one only after 21 days from e-filing or more than six weeks after mailing.
If the status has not changed, remember that the tracker updates once a day, usually overnight. Rechecking several times in one day will not make a return process faster. If the normal time has passed, rely on the information shown in the official service and any IRS correspondence for the next step rather than assuming the return is lost or rejected.

A refund taking longer than the general estimate does not, by itself, mean the return has been rejected or lost. The IRS identifies mistakes or missing information, additional review, and claims involving the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) among reasons processing may take longer. Amended returns follow a separate and slower process.
The key distinction is between a typical timeline and a guaranteed one. “Most refunds” being issued in less than 21 days does not mean every return will be approved in that window, and the time to receive a mailed payment or see a bank deposit can differ from the time the IRS issues it. If more information is needed, the IRS says it will contact the taxpayer by mail. Respond to such a letter according to its instructions and use the tracker to follow status changes.
Do not treat a delay as a cue to submit the same return again. Use the status tool, check for IRS mail, and follow any specific directions the IRS provides. For an issued refund that has not arrived, the next step is different from a return that is still being processed: consult the refund hub’s trace guidance and wait up to four weeks from the issue date before taking further action as the IRS generally instructs.

Use a separate tool for an amended return
Where’s My Refund? does not show the status of Form 1040-X. For an amended individual return, use the IRS’s separate Where’s My Amended Return? service or call 866-464-2050. Begin checking three weeks after filing. The amended return may take up to three weeks to appear in the tracker and can take up to 16 weeks to process.

The amended-return tracker asks for the taxpayer’s identification number, date of birth, and ZIP code. It shows three statuses: Received, Adjusted, and Completed. These are amended-return stages, not the standard refund tracker’s stages. Use the amended service rather than interpreting the standard tracker’s lack of information as a problem with Form 1040-X.
The two services differ in both the kind of return they track and when to start checking. For a standard return, the IRS’s guidance says to wait 24 hours for a current-year e-filed return, three or four days for a prior-year e-filed return, or four weeks for a paper return. For Form 1040-X, start with the amended-return service three weeks after filing, and allow up to 16 weeks for processing. If you are unsure which service applies, check whether you filed a standard individual return or a Form 1040-X to amend one.
Special timing note for Form 8379
The 2025 Instructions for Form 1040 give a separate wait period for a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation: allow 11 weeks after e-filing or 14 weeks after mailing before checking. These figures are specific to the 2025 instructions and should not be assumed to apply to a different tax year without checking that year’s instructions. This exception is distinct from the standard wait periods in the table above.
If the IRS says it sent the refund but you have not received it
First distinguish issuance from receipt. A “Refund Sent” status means the IRS issued the payment, not necessarily that a check has reached you or a bank has posted the deposit. The IRS generally asks taxpayers to wait up to four weeks from the issue date before taking further action on a missing refund.

After that wait, consult the IRS refund hub’s trace guidance. Do not assume one trace procedure applies to everyone: instructions vary by filing status and whether the payment was a check or direct deposit. Follow the current IRS directions for your specific situation. If the tracker has not reached “Refund Sent,” this missing-payment process is not the same as a processing delay; continue to follow the status and any IRS correspondence.

How long does an IRS refund take?
The IRS says most refunds are issued in less than 21 days. Its refund hub gives typical receipt estimates of about three weeks for e-filed returns and six or more weeks for mailed returns. Errors, missing information, credit claims, or additional review can take longer.
What do the three refund status messages mean?
“Return Received” means the IRS has received the return and is processing it. “Refund Approved” means it approved a refund, and the tool may display a personalized date. “Refund Sent” means the IRS issued the payment, though a check may still be in transit or a bank deposit may not yet have posted.
How often does Where’s My Refund update?
The IRS updates the status once a day, usually overnight. Rechecking multiple times during the day will not produce a faster update.
How do I check an amended tax return?
Use the separate Where’s My Amended Return? tool or call 866-464-2050, beginning three weeks after filing Form 1040-X. The tracker asks for an identification number, date of birth, and ZIP code and shows Received, Adjusted, or Completed. Processing can take up to 16 weeks.

Can I call the IRS about a refund right away?
The 2025 Form 1040 instructions say IRS phone or walk-in staff can research a standard refund only after 21 days from e-filing or more than six weeks after mailing. For standard status, the official automated number is 800-829-1954.
The Bottom Line
For a standard individual return, check Where’s My Refund? at IRS.gov with the return’s SSN or ITIN, filing status, and exact whole-dollar refund amount. Wait 24 hours after a current-year e-file, three or four days after a prior-year e-file, or four weeks after mailing. Read the tracker’s stage rather than treating typical processing estimates as a promise; use the amended-return service for Form 1040-X and the IRS refund hub if a payment marked sent has not arrived.
