Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore investing in a Specialized Investment Fund (SIF), check two things separately: whether you can meet its ₹10 lakh minimum investment threshold and how the specific strategy allows you to redeem. The threshold is aggregated across strategies offered by that SIF under your PAN; regular mutual fund holdings do not count. Exit frequency and notice periods depend on the strategy documents, so the SIF label alone does not tell you when you can get your money back.
The rules below reflect SEBI’s Master Circular for Mutual Funds as on March 20, 2026, including the active-breach monitoring rules introduced in 2025. Check SEBI’s current circulars and the AMC’s latest strategy documents before placing an order, since terms and rules may change.

First separate AMC launch eligibility from your own eligibility
“SIF eligibility” can refer to two different tests. One determines whether a mutual fund is eligible to launch an SIF; the other concerns whether an investor can meet the minimum investment threshold. AMC launch criteria are not a personal qualification test for investors.
How a mutual fund may qualify to launch an SIF
SEBI’s March 20, 2026 Master Circular provides two routes. Under Route 1, the mutual fund must have operated for at least three years and have average assets under management (AUM) of at least ₹10,000 crore over the immediately preceding three years. Under Route 2, prescribed experience and AUM conditions apply to the SIF’s chief investment officer (CIO) and an additional fund manager. A specified enforcement-history condition also applies.

The Route 2 experience and AUM conditions are a test of the fund-management team, not of the investor. The ₹10,000 crore figure is the AMC’s average AUM requirement for Route 1; it is not an amount an investor needs to invest. If you are evaluating whether a particular SIF is operating under the framework, rely on the AMC’s disclosures and current SEBI requirements rather than trying to apply the launch test to your personal portfolio.
These launch routes answer a provider-level question: whether the mutual fund satisfies SEBI’s conditions for offering an SIF. They do not tell you whether a particular strategy suits your needs, what its redemption terms are, or whether your own holdings meet the investor threshold. Do not treat the mutual fund’s size, operating history, or manager credentials as a substitute for reading the chosen strategy’s documents.
Your investor-level threshold
The standard minimum investment threshold is ₹10 lakh. SEBI applies it to the aggregate value of an investor’s holdings across the investment strategies offered by that specific SIF, tracked at PAN level. Holdings in regular mutual fund schemes—including schemes from the same AMC—are outside this calculation.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That means you should not assume that ₹10 lakh invested in an AMC’s ordinary mutual fund schemes helps meet the SIF threshold. Nor should you assume that the threshold is assessed separately for each SIF strategy: the stated test aggregates strategies within the specific SIF. Confirm with the AMC or its transaction platform how it will account for your existing SIF holdings and a proposed order.
For example, if your holdings are spread across two strategies offered by one SIF, the relevant check is the combined value of those holdings under your PAN, rather than an isolated check of each strategy. By contrast, a holding in a regular mutual fund scheme of the same AMC does not add to that SIF total. These examples explain the scope of the calculation; the AMC’s system and current disclosures determine how the value is recorded and monitored for an actual transaction.
“Minimum investment” can sound like a one-time amount to put into a single strategy. The stated rule is instead a minimum threshold for the aggregate value across the specific SIF’s strategies at PAN level. Because the number concerns value, a transaction can affect the total, and a market movement can change it even when you have not initiated a transaction. That is why it is important to understand the separate shortfall rules before you invest or redeem.
How to check a SIF before you invest
- Identify the exact SIF and strategy. Use the AMC’s current materials and confirm that each document relates to the strategy you intend to buy. SIF strategies do not necessarily share the same redemption schedule or notice terms. Write down the strategy’s full name and check the document’s date or version so you do not compare terms from different products or outdated disclosures.
- Confirm how the ₹10 lakh threshold is counted. Check the aggregate value of your holdings across that SIF’s strategies under your PAN. Ask the AMC or platform to confirm how existing holdings and the proposed investment or redemption will be treated before submitting an order. If you hold more than one strategy, ask how the platform identifies them as belonging to the same SIF and where you can see the combined figure.
- Find the dealing and exit provisions. In the strategy’s information and offer documents, locate subscription frequency, redemption frequency, any notice period, and the full terms that apply to redemption. Record the actual provisions for your strategy, not just a general SIF description. If a document refers you to another section or document for redemption mechanics, follow that reference and read the linked terms as well.
- Check whether the documents are current. Use the latest versions made available by the AMC and check for subsequent SEBI circulars. A previously viewed schedule or rule may not reflect current terms. Keep a copy or note the version and date you reviewed, particularly if you are comparing strategies or planning a future withdrawal.
- Decide what you would do after a shortfall. Understand the difference between a transaction-driven active breach and a market-driven passive breach before placing an order that could take your aggregate value below the threshold. Ask how the AMC will notify you, what it accepts as a rebalance, and what happens if the required steps are not completed within the stated period.
A practical document checklist
When reviewing the strategy’s information and offer documents, look specifically for the name of the SIF and strategy, the subscription schedule, the redemption schedule, the notice period, and the clauses explaining the minimum investment threshold and shortfall handling. Do not assume that a headline page contains all relevant conditions. The detailed terms may explain how the schedule operates or how a notice must be given.
It is useful to separate facts that apply to the entire SIF from facts that apply only to one strategy. The ₹10 lakh threshold is aggregated across strategies offered by that specific SIF under your PAN. The redemption schedule and any notice period, however, must be checked for the particular strategy. A statement about one strategy’s exit arrangements is not a reliable basis for assuming that another strategy in the same SIF has identical terms.

Before submitting an order, compare your current aggregate SIF value with the likely effect of the transaction. Ask the AMC or transaction platform to confirm the relevant value and how the order will be treated. This is particularly important for a redemption: the rules require the AMC to ensure that an investor-initiated redemption does not take the total below the threshold. Avoid relying only on a rough estimate if the transaction could leave you close to ₹10 lakh.
What happens if your SIF value falls below ₹10 lakh?
The consequence depends on why the aggregate value fell below the threshold. SEBI distinguishes an active breach, caused by an investor-initiated transaction, from a passive breach caused by a fall in NAV. The rules are not interchangeable.
| Situation | What it means | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Active breach | An investor-initiated transaction pushes the aggregate SIF holdings below ₹10 lakh. | Units are frozen for debit, and the investor has 30 calendar days to rebalance. If the investor does not rebalance during that period, the AMC automatically redeems the frozen units at the applicable NAV of the next immediate business day after the period ends. |
| Passive breach | A market-driven NAV decline takes the aggregate value below ₹10 lakh. | It is not treated as a violation of the threshold. The investor may redeem only the entire remaining SIF investment, rather than redeeming a portion and leaving a sub-threshold balance. |
Active breach: a transaction takes the value below the threshold
SEBI requires the AMC to ensure that an investor’s total investment value does not fall below the minimum threshold because of redemption transactions initiated by the investor. If an investor-initiated transaction does create an active breach, the response is a debit freeze and a 30-calendar-day opportunity to rebalance. “Calendar days” includes weekends and holidays; it is not a 30-business-day window.
If the investor does not rebalance within the 30-day period, the AMC automatically redeems the frozen units using the applicable NAV of the next immediate business day after the period. Do not treat the cure period as permission to make further debits from frozen units. Ask the AMC how it will notify you, what it accepts as a rebalance, and how it will apply the rule to the order you are considering.
In practical terms, an active breach is linked to an action initiated by the investor rather than to the market changing the value of the holdings. The 30-day period is an opportunity to rebalance after the breach; it is not an extension of the redemption schedule or a promise that an order can be carried out on any day. Confirm with the AMC what rebalance action is acceptable and how to complete it. The applicable NAV for automatic redemption is specified as that of the next immediate business day after the period ends, so do not assume it will be the NAV from the day you first received notice.
For a simple illustration, suppose a redemption order would reduce your aggregate value across the SIF’s strategies from above ₹10 lakh to below ₹10 lakh. That is the kind of order for which the threshold check matters: the rule is designed to prevent an investor-initiated redemption from pushing the total under the threshold. If an active breach nevertheless occurs, the debit freeze and 30-calendar-day rebalance process apply. The exact operational treatment of a proposed order should be confirmed with the AMC before you submit it.
Keep the notice and any communication about a freeze, the deadline, and the AMC’s rebalance instructions. Because the period is measured in calendar days, waiting until the end of the window to clarify the required action could leave little time to complete it. If you are uncertain about a notice date or a step the AMC requires, ask promptly and retain the written response.

Passive breach: NAV movement takes the value below the threshold
A passive breach occurs when the investment’s value falls below ₹10 lakh because of NAV movement rather than an investor-initiated transaction. SEBI does not treat this as a threshold violation. However, while the holding remains below the threshold, the investor may redeem only the entire remaining SIF investment. A partial redemption is not the permitted exit under this rule.

The distinction matters when planning a withdrawal: a low balance caused by market performance is treated differently from one caused by your own transaction. If you are unsure which condition applies to your account, confirm the AMC’s treatment before submitting a redemption instruction.
For example, a decline in NAV could move the aggregate value below ₹10 lakh even though you made no redemption. That is a passive shortfall, not an investor-created breach. The rule does not require you to treat it as a violation, but it restricts the redemption choice: you may redeem the whole remaining SIF investment, not just a portion while retaining a sub-threshold balance. “Entire remaining SIF investment” is important wording to clarify with the AMC if you hold multiple strategies within that SIF, since the threshold is aggregated across those strategies.
Do not assume that an ordinary partial withdrawal remains available simply because the shortfall was caused by market movement. Before sending an instruction, ask the platform to confirm whether your account is recorded as having a passive breach and what it will accept as redemption of the entire remaining investment. This avoids confusing a passive shortfall with an active breach and its separate freeze and rebalance process.

Can you redeem a SIF investment whenever you want?
Not necessarily. Redemption access is strategy-specific. SEBI’s framework sets minimum redemption frequencies for different strategy categories, but an AMC may choose a less frequent schedule. Subscription frequency can differ from redemption frequency, and a strategy may also impose a notice period based on its structure and liquidity risk.
So a frequent subscription window does not establish that redemptions are equally frequent, and neither schedule by itself promises same-day access to your money. The controlling details for an investor are the current terms for the exact strategy—particularly the redemption frequency and notice provisions in its information and offer documents.
Frequency and notice are separate items to check. Frequency tells you the schedule on which redemptions may be offered; a notice period may require advance notification in line with the strategy’s terms. A strategy’s stated frequency therefore does not, by itself, answer how quickly a particular redemption instruction can be acted on. Check both provisions and any related conditions in the current documents.
SEBI’s framework includes a category-level table of minimum redemption frequencies. The relevant category and the AMC’s chosen schedule matter: an AMC may set a less frequent schedule than the regulatory minimum. The exact category-by-category values are not reproduced here, so do not infer a daily, weekly, or other timetable from the broad SIF label. Verify the current regulatory table and the schedule stated for your strategy.
What to record when comparing strategies
- Threshold treatment: how the AMC monitors your PAN-level aggregate across the strategies of that SIF, and how a proposed transaction affects it.
- Redemption frequency: the schedule stated for the strategy. The SEBI framework’s category-level minimums differ, and an AMC may select a less frequent schedule; do not infer a schedule from the strategy label alone.
- Notice period: whether you must notify the AMC before a redemption and how the notice term applies to the order.
- Subscription terms: the subscription schedule, checked separately from the redemption schedule.
- Shortfall treatment: the process for an active breach and the restriction that applies after a passive breach.
For a useful comparison, put the exact terms for each candidate strategy side by side rather than comparing only their names or broad categories. Record the SIF and strategy name, the source document and its date, the redemption frequency, the notice provision, and what the documents say about threshold shortfalls. If a term is unclear or not easy to locate, ask the AMC for clarification instead of filling the gap with an assumption.

The applicable frequency is not necessarily the one that feels most convenient. A schedule that is less frequent than another strategy’s may still be the schedule the AMC has chosen under the framework. Your decision should account for that stated access and any notice requirement. Do not count on being able to redeem on a date simply because you could subscribe on that date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions to resolve with the AMC before placing an order
- How does the platform aggregate my holdings across this SIF’s strategies under my PAN?
- Will the proposed investment or redemption leave the aggregate below ₹10 lakh?
- What redemption frequency and notice period apply to this exact strategy today?
- How and when will I be told if an active breach triggers a debit freeze and a 30-day rebalance period?
- What does the AMC require to count as rebalancing, and how will automatic redemption be processed if I do not rebalance?
- If NAV movement has taken the aggregate below the threshold, how does the platform handle an instruction to redeem the entire remaining SIF investment?
You can make these questions more precise by referring to the intended strategy by name and describing the order you are considering. Ask the AMC to confirm the existing aggregate value it is using, whether a proposed order affects that value, and which current redemption and notice terms apply. If you hold multiple strategies, make clear that your question concerns the total across the SIF under your PAN rather than only one strategy.
For an active-breach notice, ask for the date the 30-calendar-day period begins and ends, what steps qualify as rebalancing, and what happens to frozen units if you do not complete those steps. For a passive shortfall, ask how to submit an instruction for the entire remaining SIF investment. These questions address the different consequences without assuming that the AMC will treat the two situations alike.
These are operational questions, not substitutes for reading the disclosures. Keep the strategy documents and the AMC’s written answers with your investment records so that you can refer to the actual terms applicable to your holding.
How to make the decision
Proceed only after you can answer three practical questions: whether your PAN-level holdings can meet the SIF threshold without counting regular mutual funds; how often and on what notice the chosen strategy permits redemption; and what you would do if a transaction or a fall in NAV takes your aggregate below ₹10 lakh. The first is an eligibility check, the second is a liquidity check, and the third is a contingency check. A strategy that clears one does not automatically clear the others.
Use the rules as a pre-investment checklist rather than as a promise about future access. The ₹10 lakh threshold tells you how the investor-level minimum is assessed; the SIF launch routes explain provider eligibility; and the strategy disclosures set out the exit terms you need to plan around. They answer different questions and should be checked separately.
Finally, base your decision on the latest documents for the exact strategy and the current SEBI framework. SEBI’s Master Circular for Mutual Funds as on March 20, 2026 consolidates the relevant provisions, including the minimum investment threshold and redemption rules. The active-breach monitoring process was set out in SEBI’s July 29, 2025 circular, and SEBI’s August 2025 Investment Strategy Information Document provides disclosure context. Check for later circulars and updated AMC documents before acting.

Does my regular mutual fund investment count toward the SIF minimum?
No. Regular mutual fund scheme holdings do not count toward the SIF threshold, even when they are with the same AMC. The aggregation applies to strategies offered by the specific SIF.
Can I redeem my SIF investment anytime?
Not necessarily. Redemption frequency is strategy-specific, an AMC may choose a less frequent schedule than the category-level regulatory minimum, and a notice period may apply. Check the current information and offer documents for the exact strategy.
What happens if my SIF value falls below ₹10 lakh?
The consequence depends on the cause. An investor-initiated transaction can create an active breach, triggering a debit freeze and 30 calendar days to rebalance; without rebalancing, the frozen units are automatically redeemed at the applicable NAV of the next immediate business day after that period. A market-driven NAV decline is a passive breach, which is not treated as a violation, but permits redemption only of the entire remaining SIF investment.

Is the ₹10 lakh threshold checked separately for every SIF strategy?
No. The threshold is aggregated across the investment strategies offered by that specific SIF at PAN level. Do not assume that the test is applied separately to each strategy or that holdings in other mutual fund schemes count.
What is the difference between an active and passive breach?
An active breach results from an investor-initiated transaction that takes aggregate holdings below ₹10 lakh. A passive breach results from a market-driven fall in NAV. The active-breach process provides 30 calendar days to rebalance after a debit freeze; after a passive breach, only redemption of the entire remaining SIF investment is permitted.
Are subscription and redemption frequencies always the same?
No. SEBI permits subscription frequency to differ from redemption frequency. Check the schedule for each separately, along with any redemption notice period, in the current strategy documents.
The Bottom Line
Before investing, verify the SIF’s ₹10 lakh PAN-level threshold separately from AMC launch eligibility, then read the exact strategy’s redemption frequency and notice terms. Know the distinct consequences of an active transaction-driven breach and a passive NAV-driven shortfall, and confirm current terms with the AMC before placing an order.
