You can still pay the ATO directly by credit card: an Australian Government announcement on 9 October 2026 says direct ATO credit-card acceptance will continue until 30 June 2027. The fee, however, is not a figure you should assume from an older ATO fee table. Card-surcharge rules changed on 1 October 2026, and the amount shown for your particular debt and card in the payment flow is the practical figure to check before you confirm.
Whether paying by card makes sense depends on that confirmed fee, rewards your card issuer says you will actually earn, when the payment will be credited, and whether you will carry a balance and pay interest.

Can you pay the ATO by credit card?
Yes. As of 13 October 2026, direct credit-card acceptance by the ATO is scheduled to continue through 30 June 2027. The Australian Government announced the extension on 9 October 2026, replacing earlier reports that direct acceptance would end on 30 November 2026. The same announcement says that after 30 June 2027, credit-card payments through third parties and other payment methods will remain available.
This date concerns direct ATO acceptance; it does not promise that every card, debt, or ATO service will offer the same payment route. Available choices and transaction details can depend on the payment you are making. Check the options displayed in the relevant ATO service rather than assuming that a method listed for one type of debt is available for another.

The ATO’s BAS guidance identifies BPAY and credit card through online services as payment choices. For a BAS payment, use the ATO service for the specific obligation to check the methods offered, the amount due, and any timing information. Do not treat a successful card authorisation as proof that every payment method will be credited at the same speed.
How much does it cost to pay the ATO by credit card?
There is no reliable single current fee to quote for every ATO payment and card. The ATO’s card terms page contains a fee schedule with different percentages for American Express, domestic debit and credit cards, and international cards. That schedule is older than the card-surcharge rule change that took effect on 1 October 2026, so its percentages should not be treated as a live quote for a payment today.
Instead, inspect the amount and total shown immediately before authorising the transaction. Check that the payment amount is the amount you intend to pay, identify any additional charge shown, and compare the displayed total with your available funds and the cost of your alternatives. If no charge or fee is displayed, do not infer that a fee from an older schedule applies; if a fee is displayed, do not assume it is the same for a different card or payment.
Calculate the total from the confirmed fee
If the payment amount is P and the payment screen confirms a proportional fee of r, the fee is P × r. The total debit is P + (P × r). For example, using a purely hypothetical $10,000 payment and a purely hypothetical 1% fee, the fee would be $100 and the total debit would be $10,100. These figures illustrate the arithmetic only; they are not a statement of the ATO’s current rate.

What changed with card surcharges on 1 October 2026?
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) says eftpos, Mastercard, and Visa introduced no-surcharge rules for credit, debit, and prepaid cards from 1 October 2026. Its FAQ also records announcements by American Express, PayPal, and UnionPay. The RBA explains that the rules and any exceptions are set by the networks and may change.
A card surcharge is a charge added because a customer chooses to pay by card. It is not the same thing as every fee connected with processing a payment. The RBA distinguishes card surcharges from fees that a payment service provider charges for a service, such as processing or terminal rental. A service fee is not automatically a card surcharge just because it relates to a card transaction.

This distinction matters when interpreting an amount in a payment flow. The ATO’s older card terms describe a card fee as charged by the card supplier rather than as part of the underlying ATO debt, but that language and its historical percentages are not enough to establish what will be charged for an individual transaction under rules in force since 1 October 2026. Consider the exact charge presented for your payment and the applicable terms; do not label all processing-related charges as prohibited surcharges or assume a fee is permitted simply because it is called a service fee.

How to decide whether paying by card is worth it
Evaluate the transaction on four separate questions: what fee is confirmed for this payment, when the ATO will receive or credit it, whether the issuer will award rewards on this specific transaction, and whether you will incur interest by carrying the balance. A card payment is not automatically worthwhile because it earns points, nor automatically unsuitable because it has a fee. The result depends on the numbers and timing that apply to you.
1. Start with the fee for this payment
Use the total shown before authorisation to establish the cost. If the amount changes as you select a different card or payment route, compare the resulting totals rather than treating the first figure as universal. If the terms or checkout do not make a charge clear, pause and confirm it before proceeding; do not rely on an old percentage to estimate a current transaction.
2. Confirm whether the payment earns rewards
Ask the card issuer or check the terms for the particular card to determine whether an ATO payment earns points, cashback, or other benefits, and how much. The fact that a card earns rewards on ordinary purchases does not establish that it earns them on tax payments. Neither ATO payment guidance nor the available card-fee information confirms a universal rewards treatment across issuers.

3. Include interest and other costs
If you expect to pay the card balance in full by its due date, assess the payment fee against the benefits you have confirmed and any other costs that apply. If you will revolve the balance, add the interest cost of borrowing to the calculation. Your card’s interest rate and the length of time you would carry the balance are specific to your account; no universal rate can be used here.
A useful decision expression is: net value = confirmed rewards value − confirmed payment fee − interest and other costs. If the result is negative, the card is costing more than the rewards are worth. Even a positive estimate depends on the issuer awarding the expected rewards and on the payment being credited in time. Avoid carrying expensive card debt merely to pursue uncertain points.
4. Check that the method meets the due date
Compare processing and crediting timing as well as cost. A cheaper route is not a good choice if it means missing a deadline. The ATO says BAS amounts must be paid in full and on time to avoid interest. Check timing with the relevant ATO payment service and the payment provider, and leave enough time for the route you select; do not assume BPAY, an online card payment, and other options clear at the same speed.

Card, BPAY, or another payment route?
For BAS payments, the ATO identifies BPAY and online credit-card payments among the available methods. The right comparison is specific to your debt, because eligibility, exact instructions, fees, and timing can vary. Use the payment options presented for the relevant obligation and compare the full transaction cost rather than only whether a card can be used.

| What to compare | Questions to answer before paying |
|---|---|
| Fee | What charge and total does the payment flow show for this debt and card? What does the alternative method cost, if a charge is stated? |
| Crediting time | When will the payment be received or credited, and will that timing meet the due date? |
| Rewards | Does the card issuer confirm rewards for this type of ATO transaction, and what are those rewards worth to you? |
| Borrowing cost | Will you clear the card balance by the due date, or pay interest while carrying it? |
| Availability | Does the ATO service offer this option for the particular tax debt you are paying? |
There is no universal winner in this comparison. A route with no card rewards may still be preferable if its confirmed cost and timing suit you. A card may be reasonable when the confirmed benefits exceed the fee and other costs, the issuer confirms rewards eligibility, and the payment will be credited when needed. Make the comparison from the actual terms and amounts rather than from assumptions about a particular provider.
Does the fee affect GST or income-tax deductions?
GST treatment and income-tax deductibility are different questions. The ATO’s GSTR 2014/2 says a surcharge on a card payment of an Australian tax or fee that is subject to Division 81 has the same Division 81 GST treatment as the underlying tax or fee. That is a statement about GST characterisation; it does not decide whether a taxpayer can claim an income-tax deduction.
Separately, ATO interpretive decision 1011580720540 concerns a personal income-tax debt. On the facts it considered, the fee was incurred as a step in borrowing from the card provider and was treated as a cost of borrowing, not deductible under the relevant provision. That particular decision should not be read as a blanket result for every business expense, tax debt, or payment intermediary. If a deduction would materially affect your position, ask a registered tax professional about your circumstances.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPractical checklist before you confirm payment
- Select the correct obligation. Open the relevant ATO payment service and confirm that the debt, account, and amount match the payment you intend to make.
- Review available methods. Check which payment options are offered for that obligation, including whether online card payment or BPAY is available.
- Verify the total. Select the intended card or route and review the fee, if any, and the full debit shown immediately before authorisation.
- Check timing. Confirm the expected payment or crediting time against the due date, allowing for the processing route you selected.
- Verify rewards and borrowing costs. Check the card issuer’s terms for rewards on this transaction and calculate any interest or other cost if you will not clear the balance.
- Keep the transaction record. Retain the confirmation and any fee information shown, so you can reconcile the debit and payment against your records.
The important dates are time-sensitive: the RBA’s no-surcharge rules for the named networks began on 1 October 2026, and the Government’s 9 October 2026 announcement says direct ATO credit-card acceptance continues until 30 June 2027. Check the live payment flow at the time you pay for the fee, available route, and transaction timing that actually apply.
