USCIS’s FY 2025 H-1B Electronic Registration Process presentation distinguishes the registration confirmation number from the receipt number used to track a petition. USCIS’s Case Status Online guidance says to enter the receipt number without dashes. Do not substitute one identifier for the other, even if both relate to the same employer or H-1B process.

The distinction matters because registration and petition tracking apply at different points in the process. A registration confirmation number identifies a submitted registration. It cannot be used to track a case in Case Status Online. A petition receipt number belongs to the petition USCIS received and is the identifier for its online case record. A registration update does not establish the outcome of a later petition.
How to check an H-1B registration
- Sign in to the USCIS online account used for the registration. If an employer or representative handled the registration, coordinate with that account holder or the person authorized to access the record. The registration update belongs in the registration account, not in the petition-status search.
- Open the registration dashboard and select the relevant registration. Check the status and any notices shown for that specific registration. Make sure you are viewing the correct filing season and registration rather than a different entry in the account.
- Read the notice or account message itself. A status line can tell you that the record changed, but the message or notice provides the context for that specific event. Keep a copy for your records and note any action or date stated there.
- If a petition is later filed, switch to the petition’s receipt number. The registration confirmation number remains tied to the registration. It is not the petition receipt number for Case Status Online.
A registration update and a petition update answer different questions. The registration account reports on the registration stage; Case Status Online is used for a petition USCIS has received. A registration outcome does not, by itself, tell you the later petition’s adjudication result.
If you are checking because you have a registration confirmation number but no petition receipt notice, start with the registration account. Do not enter the confirmation number into Case Status Online or assume that the tool is malfunctioning when it cannot find it. If you need to view registration notices but do not control the account that submitted the registration, ask the employer or authorized representative who handled it to check the relevant account record.

- Find the USCIS receipt notice for the petition. Copy the receipt number from that notice. USCIS describes it as 13 characters: three letters followed by 10 numbers.
- Remove any dashes when entering the number. Keep the letters and digits in the order shown on the notice. Take care not to confuse similar-looking characters or use a registration confirmation number in its place.
- Enter the number in USCIS Case Status Online. USCIS’s online status tool accepts a petition receipt number. If you already use a USCIS account for the case, account access is another route; USCIS directs account logins through MyAccount.
- Review the displayed case update. Treat it as a summary of the record, not as a replacement for a notice with case-specific instructions.
- Open the corresponding notice in the USCIS account when it is available. For a request, decision, or other action, follow the notice for the exact instructions, required documents, deadlines, and outcome.
If the number is rejected, check that it came from the petition receipt notice, has three letters and 10 numbers, and contains no dashes. If you only have the electronic-registration confirmation number, return to the registration account rather than repeatedly trying that number in Case Status Online.
A receipt number is not an estimate of how soon USCIS will decide the case, and entering it in the status tool does not submit a request or response on your behalf. It is used to retrieve the petition record. If the online summary and a notice seem to differ, read the full notice and use USCIS’s case-specific contact options to clarify the record rather than guessing from a short status line.

Receipt or acceptance activity
A receipt-related update indicates that USCIS has recorded a filing event; it is not an approval. For a petition, use the receipt number printed on the receipt notice for further tracking. For a registration, use the registration account and its associated confirmation number. Keep those records separate.

In practical terms, receipt activity tells you that there is a record to track; it does not tell you that USCIS has finished reviewing the petition or that the requested classification has been granted. The phrase that a notice was issued is not itself the decision’s substance. Locate and read the notice for the outcome and any next steps. Keep the notice with the corresponding receipt number so that you do not confuse it with a registration update or a different filing.

No recent change
A quiet status page alone does not establish that a case is lost, denied, or outside normal processing. Compare the case with the current USCIS processing-time estimate for the relevant form, category, and office, then check whether USCIS permits an inquiry for your receipt date. Anecdotes about another applicant’s timeline are not a substitute for those case-specific checks.
Processing-time estimates are dynamic reference data, not a promised decision date. A case may have no visible new status while it remains within the applicable estimate. The useful question is not simply how long someone else waited, but whether the current USCIS tool shows that your case is eligible for an inquiry based on the information from your own receipt notice.
A document was mailed
If an update says a document was mailed, follow the instructions for that notice and monitor the delivery address associated with the case. The exact next step depends on the document and the USCIS instructions. Do not assume that every mailed-document situation follows the same timetable or inquiry process. This is a historical measure of adjudicated cases, not a prediction that your individual case will be decided by a particular date. The displayed estimate can also depend on which form, category, office, and receipt date apply.
The 93% figure describes a percentile in USCIS’s processing-time methodology; it is not the share of H-1B cases that will be approved, nor a guarantee that a particular case will finish within that span. USCIS uses the estimate as part of its inquiry process. The tool’s current result and eligibility instructions are more useful for your individual timing question than a static number or a reported wait from another case.
USCIS e-Request guidance describes certain cases with a recent notice, RFE response, or online status update as actively processing for a stated 60-day period. That is a USCIS inquiry criterion, not a universal waiting period for every H-1B case. Because the guidance and eligibility calculations can change, rely on the live inquiry tool for your case rather than applying 60 days as a standing deadline. A recent update may affect whether an inquiry is available; check the live tool instead of assuming that every recent status change starts the same clock in every circumstance.

There is no single processing-time number to quote for all H-1B petitions. The USCIS tool requires the applicable form, category, and office selection, and its displayed information can change. Service Center Operations may appear where cases are handled across locations rather than at one named center.
