There is no universally right percentage of a portfolio to put in technology stocks. The right amount depends on your goals, time horizon, tolerance for risk, and existing investments. Before adding a technology-sector fund or more tech shares, check how much exposure you already have through broad-market funds—and distinguish the percentage of your whole portfolio from the percentage of your stock allocation.
Why there is no single right percentage
Technology stocks are shares of companies in a particular sector, not a separate asset class with a standard place in every portfolio. A technology-sector fund or a group of individual tech stocks creates a sector tilt: it deliberately puts more of your investments into one part of the stock market than a broad-market portfolio would.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes asset allocation as dividing investments among assets such as stocks, bonds, and cash. Its guidance says the appropriate mix depends on your investment goal, time horizon, and risk tolerance. The SEC does not give a universal technology-stock allocation, and its beginner guide says no one allocation model fits every financial goal.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat means a percentage that suits one investor may be inappropriate for another. Someone investing for a distant goal may be able to tolerate more fluctuation than someone who expects to use the money soon. Even among investors with similar timelines, differences in financial circumstances and comfort with losses can change what level of concentrated risk is acceptable. Without knowing those circumstances and the investor’s current holdings, a personal target cannot responsibly be specified.

Be clear about the denominator
“20% in technology” can mean 20% of the entire portfolio or 20% of the stock portion. Those are different exposures. For example, in a hypothetical portfolio where stocks make up 60% of all investments and technology represents 30% of the stock holdings, the technology exposure is 18% of the whole portfolio: 60% multiplied by 30%. This is only an illustration of the calculation, not a suggested allocation.
Decide which denominator you mean before comparing percentages, setting a target, or checking whether your portfolio has drifted. The overall stock allocation and the technology share within that stock allocation are linked decisions; a sector percentage cannot be evaluated in isolation.
Find your existing technology exposure first
A portfolio can have substantial exposure to technology companies without owning a fund named “technology.” Broad-market mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) may already hold companies in the sector. Different funds can also own some of the same large companies, even when their names or investment categories differ. Adding a dedicated technology fund without looking through existing holdings can therefore increase a concentration you did not intend.

Inventory direct and fund-held investments
- List every investment account and holding. Include individual shares as well as mutual funds and ETFs. Use current account statements or holdings pages rather than relying on memory.
- Check each fund’s latest fact sheet and holdings disclosure. Look for its sector allocation and largest holdings. Fund names alone do not reveal the full exposure, and holdings and product details can change.
- Identify overlapping companies. Compare top holdings across funds and with your individual shares. Two funds that sound different can still hold some of the same companies.
- Combine direct and indirect exposure. Count the tech shares you own directly and the exposure embedded in funds. When calculating a portfolio-wide percentage, use each investment’s share of the portfolio and its disclosed technology allocation; avoid counting the same fund holding twice.
- State the result against the whole portfolio and the stock allocation. Both views help clarify whether a proposed addition would be a small tilt or a material concentration.
The SEC cautions that owning a mutual fund or ETF does not automatically make a portfolio diversified, particularly when a fund is narrowly focused. Vanguard notes that broad stock funds can own thousands of stocks, while sector funds focus on a particular sector. Breadth and overlap are more informative than the number of funds or their labels.
What a technology-heavy portfolio changes
A sector investment offers focused exposure to an industry, but that focus means less diversification than a broad-market fund. Vanguard identifies industry concentration risk, market risk, and asset concentration risk among the risks relevant to sector funds. If a problem affects the sector or a small number of large holdings, it can have a disproportionate effect on a concentrated portfolio. Sector funds can experience wide swings and potentially large losses.
A broad mix of investments can reduce the effect of concentration in one area, but diversification does not guarantee a profit or prevent a loss. A technology tilt is therefore best understood as an additional risk choice within an already diversified plan—not a substitute for diversification across the overall portfolio.

Why strong historical performance can mislead
Past returns can make a concentrated bet look self-evident after the fact. Vanguard’s 2025 illustration compared hypothetical $100 investments over the 10 years ending December 31, 2024. Its calculations used MSCI indexes and historical stock data from Bloomberg:
| Historical investment example | Hypothetical value at the end of the period |
|---|---|
| Broad U.S. market | $334 |
| U.S. growth stocks | $470 |
| U.S. information technology | $654 |
| Magnificent Seven stocks | $4,433 |
| Nvidia stock | $27,971 |
These are historical hypothetical end balances, not a forecast, expected return, or recommendation to buy any security. The comparison illustrates how results over one past decade varied as the investment became narrower; it does not show what will happen over a future period. The Magnificent Seven label in Vanguard’s example refers to Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla. An index cannot be invested in directly, and past performance is no guarantee of future results.

1. Start with the job the money must do
Identify the goal and when you expect to need the money. The SEC’s allocation guidance ties investment mix to both the goal and time horizon. Money needed soon generally calls for less volatility than long-term retirement savings. Consider how a large decline in a concentrated sector position would affect your ability to meet that goal, rather than judging the position only by its recent gains.

2. Set the broad asset mix before choosing sectors
Decide how much of the portfolio belongs in stocks, bonds, and cash in light of your circumstances. Only then assess whether a technology tilt fits inside the stock allocation. This sequencing prevents a sector decision from quietly changing the risk profile of the entire portfolio.
3. Measure the portfolio you already have
Use the inventory process above to estimate direct and indirect technology exposure. Check sector weights and top holdings in current disclosures, and look for overlapping positions. If the available disclosures do not let you calculate exposure precisely, treat the result as an estimate rather than a precise personal figure; the cited guidance does not establish a current technology percentage for any particular investor or fund.

If you still want extra exposure, treat it as a deliberate concentrated risk. Vanguard advises that sector funds should supplement an already diversified portfolio and that investors should be comfortable with the added risk. Ask whether you could maintain the position through a sharp fall, whether the tilt serves a defined portfolio purpose, and whether you would still choose it without relying on recent performance as a promise of future returns.

5. Compare the actual fund or holdings, not just the category name
Before choosing between a broad-market holding and a sector fund, examine breadth of holdings, sector and top-holding concentration, overlap with your existing investments, potential volatility and loss, fees, and the tax consequences of changing positions. The general guidance supports these comparison factors; it does not rank a particular fund or supply a target allocation. Use current fund disclosures for any specific comparison because holdings, fees, and product details can change.
6. Set a review and rebalancing rule in advance
Choose how you will monitor the allocation before market movements test your discipline. The SEC describes calendar-based and threshold-based approaches to review and rebalancing. A calendar rule means checking at set intervals; a threshold rule means reviewing when an allocation moves sufficiently far from its chosen target. The sources do not prescribe one schedule or threshold for every investor.
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward a previously chosen allocation, rather than increasing a target simply because the sector has recently performed well. Before selling or buying, account for possible transaction costs and tax consequences. Those considerations can affect how and when you rebalance, but they do not turn a recent winner into a reliable forecast.

How to tell whether you may be too heavily invested in tech
There is no universal technology percentage at which every portfolio becomes “too heavy.” Instead, look for a mismatch between your actual exposure and the risk you meant to take. Review these questions:
- Do you know the technology exposure in your direct shares and funds, including overlapping holdings?
- Is technology a larger share of your overall portfolio than you intended, or did fund performance increase its weight without a deliberate decision?
- Would a sharp decline affecting technology or a few large holdings materially disrupt your goal or your ability to stay invested?
- Does the position sit within a broad, diversified plan, or has it become a substitute for diversification?
- Do you have a review rule, and have you considered fees and tax consequences before making changes?
If you cannot answer the first question, begin by checking current holdings disclosures rather than buying or selling based on the portfolio’s name or recent performance. If the position is already larger than intended, evaluate a planned rebalance against your goals and the potential costs of changing it. The SEC and Vanguard guidance establishes general principles, not an individualized recommendation or a precise technology-stock limit.
