On PayPal’s U.S. website, add a currency from Wallet → Add a currency. To make an existing currency primary, open the More menu beside its balance and choose Make Primary. Changing the primary currency does not convert money already in another balance; conversion is a separate action.
What your primary currency means
Your primary currency is the default balance currency for account functions such as sending and requesting payments. PayPal’s business documentation describes it as the default currency for sending and requesting payments. It is not the same as changing the country your account is registered in, and selecting it does not convert your other balances. PayPal’s account setup documentation describes the primary currency setting.

Primary currency also does not guarantee that a merchant will charge you in that currency or that a linked bank or card can receive a withdrawal in it. Checkout currency and available funding or withdrawal methods can depend on the merchant, account country, and payment method.
Before you change currencies
- These steps describe the PayPal U.S. web Wallet. Currency features and the handling of incoming payments can vary by account country.
- Make sure you are signed in to the intended account and open Wallet, not a checkout or card-management screen.
- If you want to change the currency of money already held, you need to use the separate conversion control.
- PayPal’s help page describes supported currency balances and the Wallet controls for U.S. users: Manage currencies with PayPal.
How to add a currency to PayPal
- Sign in to PayPal in a web browser.
- Open Wallet.
- Select Add a currency.
- Choose the currency you want to add.
- Select Add a currency again to confirm.
The new currency appears as a separate Wallet balance. Adding it does not transfer or convert money from your existing balance.

How to make a currency your primary currency
- Open Wallet.
- Find the balance for the currency you want as primary.
- Select the More or three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Make Primary.
Afterward, refresh Wallet or return to the balance overview and check that PayPal labels the intended balance as primary. The currency generally needs to exist as an open balance first. PayPal’s business documentation describes choosing from currency balances already held in the account: PayPal account setup.
How to convert money between PayPal balances
Use conversion only if you want to exchange money already in one balance for another currency. PayPal’s conversion instructions give this web sequence:

Check the exchange rate and conversion cost
To see an indicative rate, open Wallet → Currency calculator, select the source and destination currencies, and review the displayed rate. PayPal says its transaction exchange rate is adjusted regularly and includes a spread over a base rate. The calculator’s indication may differ from the rate applied when a transaction is processed. See PayPal’s currency calculator and exchange-rate guidance.

For U.S. consumer accounts, PayPal’s fee page lists a 4.00% conversion spread, or another amount disclosed during the transaction, for certain conversions connected with paying for goods or services or sending money so the recipient receives another currency. It lists 3.00%, or another amount disclosed during the transaction, for other transactions in the listed conversion category. These figures are not a universal rate: transaction type and account circumstances matter, and the amount shown before confirmation is the one to check. Review PayPal’s U.S. consumer fee page for current terms.
Standard withdrawals to eligible linked bank accounts or debit cards may have no withdrawal fee when no currency conversion is involved. Conversion charges may apply if the withdrawal currency differs. PayPal’s U.S. consumer fee page also lists a 1.75% fee for eligible instant bank or card transfers, subject to minimums, maximums, and other limits. Check the live fee page and the transaction screen before confirming a transfer.

What happens when someone pays you in another currency?
PayPal’s U.S. help page says that when you receive a payment in a currency you do not already hold, PayPal generally accepts it in that currency and opens a new balance. You can keep the funds in that currency if you expect to spend or refund in it, or convert them if you want another balance’s currency. Receiving behavior is not identical everywhere: PayPal’s South Africa guidance, for example, says users may be asked to accept or deny a currency they do not hold. Check the guidance for your account’s country.
If an incoming payment is being converted unexpectedly, review the receiving preferences available in your account. Older PayPal business documentation describes options for opening a currency balance, converting a payment to the primary balance, or denying a payment in an unheld currency, as well as automatic-conversion preferences. Those controls and labels should not be assumed to appear in the current personal-account interface. See PayPal’s business foreign-currency overview.

Can you withdraw a foreign-currency balance?
A foreign-currency balance can be held or spent through PayPal, but whether it can be withdrawn without conversion depends on the account’s country and the eligible linked bank or card. PayPal may apply its exchange rate when a withdrawal involves a different currency. Check the withdrawal screen before confirming; changing the primary currency does not establish that a particular withdrawal route can accept it. PayPal explains rate treatment for currency transactions in its exchange-rate guidance.
Why a currency option may be missing
- “Make Primary” is unavailable: confirm that the currency has been added as a balance, then reopen Wallet. Account country or feature availability may also affect which controls appear.
- The app does not show the control: PayPal’s verified instructions describe the website, not a guaranteed identical app path. Try Wallet on a desktop browser.
- You have a business account: business navigation may differ. Older PayPal documentation describes Profile name → Account Settings → My Money → More beside PayPal balance → Currencies. Treat this as a business or legacy-navigation variation, not the current personal-account path.
- PayPal converted an incoming payment: you may not have held that currency, or a receiving preference may have been set to convert it. Check your account’s available receiving settings.
- A withdrawal is converted or unavailable: holding a currency and withdrawing it are separate capabilities. Review the eligible bank or card route and the conversion details shown during withdrawal.
- The rate differs from a market quote: PayPal’s transaction rate includes a spread over a base rate. Compare the final amount PayPal will deliver, not only a headline market rate.
If the web Wallet still does not expose the relevant control, check PayPal’s current help center or contact support for the account-specific limitation.
When changing primary currency will not solve the problem
- If you want money already held in another currency changed, use Convert currency.
- If you want to change the account’s registered country, changing the primary balance is not that setting.
- If your goal is a particular checkout currency, the merchant may control the currency offered. A card-funded payment may offer a choice between PayPal’s conversion and the card issuer’s rate, but PayPal says that choice is not available for every card. See PayPal’s guidance on sending a payment in another currency.
- If your goal is a lower exchange cost or direct foreign-currency withdrawal, making a balance primary does not remove PayPal’s conversion spread or guarantee a withdrawal route. Compare the final rate and eligible options before converting.
PayPal is suited to managing currencies used for PayPal payments. A bank or card issuer may apply its own exchange rate and foreign-transaction fees, while a separate multi-currency account may have different supported currencies, withdrawal routes, eligibility, and pricing. Check each provider’s current terms for your country before moving funds; no one option is best for every use.
How to close a currency balance
If you no longer want a currency balance, PayPal’s U.S. Wallet help page lists Wallet → More beside the currency → Close Currency. Check the balance and any prompts PayPal displays before closing it.
