How to Calculate the After-Tax Return on a Fixed Deposit

After-tax return equals gross interest minus attributable tax, divided by the original principal. The calculation is universal; the tax rules are not.

To calculate a fixed deposit’s after-tax return, subtract the tax attributable to its interest from the gross interest, then divide the net interest by the original deposit. The arithmetic is straightforward; working out the tax is not universal. Your tax residence, tax year, other income, allowances, and local rules determine that input. Do not assume an advertised interest rate—or any tax withheld by the bank—is your after-tax return or final tax bill.

The after-tax return formula

Use figures covering the same deposit and the same period. Let P be the original principal, I the gross interest earned, and T the tax attributable to that interest under the rules that apply to you.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Net interest: I − T
  • After-tax return for the period: (I − T) ÷ P
  • After-tax return as a percentage: ((I − T) ÷ P) × 100

This percentage measures the interest left after tax relative to the original deposit. It is a return for the stated period, not necessarily an annual rate. If the deposit runs for six months, for example, a result calculated with six-month interest is a six-month return.

A hypothetical calculation

Suppose a depositor puts 10,000 currency units into a fixed deposit and earns 600 units of gross interest over its full term. If the tax attributable to that interest, after applying the depositor’s actual local rules and circumstances, is estimated at 120 units, then net interest is 600 − 120 = 480 units. The after-tax return for that term is 480 ÷ 10,000 = 0.048, or 4.8%.

The 120-unit tax figure is an assumed input solely to demonstrate the arithmetic; it is not a tax rate or estimate for any country or taxpayer. The formula does not determine whether the tax is 120, whether an allowance reduces it, or whether tax has already been collected. Establish those points separately before treating the result as your own.

How to calculate tax on savings interest

First determine the tax treatment of the interest in your jurisdiction and tax year. A fixed deposit’s interest may be considered alongside other taxable income, and an allowance or threshold may affect how much is taxable. The rate applied to a portion of income is not automatically the rate to multiply by all the deposit’s gross interest. The relevant calculation depends on the rules and your situation.

  1. Confirm your tax residence and the relevant tax year. The country where you are tax-resident and the tax year in which interest is taxable can change the rules. A deposit’s country, currency, or bank does not by itself establish which rules apply to you.
  2. Find the local treatment of deposit interest. Check an official tax authority source for whether interest is taxable, which period it belongs to, and how it is reported or collected.
  3. Account for your other income and applicable allowances. Identify any savings allowance, threshold, exemption, or income band that affects the amount due. Consider the interest together with other income where local rules require that.
  4. Work out the tax attributable to this interest. Use the required local calculation, rather than assuming that every unit of interest is taxed at one headline or marginal rate. If your tax position is complex, use qualified local tax advice.
  5. Subtract that tax from gross interest. The result is the net interest used in the return formula. Keep tax withheld by the bank separate from the final tax liability until you know whether it settles the bill or is credited against it.

The tax calculation may not be as simple as assigning a percentage to the deposit. For instance, if an allowance covers some or all of a person’s savings interest, the tax attributable to an additional amount can depend on how much of that allowance remains and how the person’s other income affects the applicable rules. A marginal rate can be relevant, but applying it mechanically to the entire interest amount can produce the wrong result.

Gross interest: use the deposit’s actual terms

Use the bank’s stated compounding terms to find gross interest or the gross maturity value. The advertised annual rate alone is not the amount earned over every term: the result also depends on the principal, time held, compounding frequency, and whether interest is paid out or added to the balance. Start with the interest the account is expected to earn before tax, not with the headline rate as if it were already a net return.

If the bank provides a gross maturity value for a deposit whose interest remains invested, subtract the original principal to get gross interest for that term. If the bank instead quotes gross interest directly, use that figure. Where the terms quote a rate but not the amount, calculate the gross amount using the bank’s specified method and dates; do not silently assume a compounding convention that the product does not promise.

When interest is paid periodically rather than at maturity, establish whether those payments are withdrawn or reinvested. If withdrawn, they do not automatically compound within the deposit. If added to the balance, the applicable terms determine whether later interest is earned on them. Tax timing can also differ by jurisdiction and account terms, so distinguish the date interest is earned, credited, or paid if local reporting rules make that distinction relevant.

Compare deposits over the same basis

For a fair comparison, hold the principal and holding period constant, and apply the same tax assumptions unless the products have different tax treatment. Compare actual gross interest, estimated tax, net interest, and after-tax return—not just the advertised rates.

Comparison item What to record Why it matters
Principal The same starting amount for each option Return is calculated relative to principal; different deposits are not directly comparable by cash interest alone.
Holding period The same start-to-end period, or a clearly stated adjustment A six-month return and a one-year return describe different periods.
Gross rate and compounding The quoted gross rate and the bank’s compounding frequency and method Rates with different compounding arrangements can produce different gross interest.
Gross interest The bank’s gross interest or gross maturity value less principal This is the pre-tax amount on which the tax calculation is based.
Estimated tax The tax attributable to the interest, using the same taxpayer and local-rule assumptions Tax varies with personal circumstances; a withholding amount may not be the final liability.
Net interest Gross interest less estimated attributable tax This shows the interest remaining after the estimated tax.
After-tax return Net interest divided by principal, expressed for the stated period This puts the net result on a comparable percentage basis.
Maturity and access terms When funds become available and what happens on early withdrawal A restriction or early-withdrawal adjustment can change the interest actually received.

If the terms differ, state the difference rather than treating the comparison as like-for-like. A longer term may produce more total interest simply because the money is invested for longer. To compare periods of different length, annualize consistently and say how you did it. A simple annualization of a period return multiplies it by the number of such periods in a year; that is not the same as an effective annual return when returns compound. For compounding comparisons, use a method consistent with the bank’s terms and identify it.

For example, if a hypothetical deposit earns a 3% after-tax return over six months, multiplying by two gives a simple annualized figure of 6%. It does not establish that the account will earn 6% over a year: a full-year deposit may have different terms, and reinvesting the first six-month proceeds changes the result if compounding applies. Use the full-year account terms for a true one-year estimate.

Withholding is not necessarily final tax

A bank may deduct tax before paying interest in some jurisdictions or situations, but withholding and final tax liability are different concepts. A deduction at source is an amount collected during payment under a particular rule. The taxpayer’s final position may depend on other income, allowances, filing, and whether the amount withheld is credited against tax due or is more than ultimately owed.

For UK savers, HMRC says savings interest above the applicable allowance is taxed at the individual’s usual Income Tax rate and explains how banks and building societies report interest and how tax may be collected. HMRC also records that the obligation for UK deposit takers to deduct tax from interest was repealed from 6 April 2016. Those rules are a reason not to assume that a fixed-deposit bank universally withholds tax: see HMRC’s guidance on how tax is paid on savings interest and its savings and investment manual entry on the repeal.

In India, the Income Tax Department’s TDS page lists 10% under section 194A for resident individuals for interest other than interest on securities for assessment year 2026–27. That is a specified tax-deducted-at-source rate in that context, not a statement that every depositor’s final tax rate is 10%. The department’s ITR-1 FAQ also notes that fixed-deposit interest, together with other income, can increase tax liability. Check the current details and your own circumstances on the Income Tax Department’s TDS rates page and its ITR-1 FAQ.

These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a global rate table. For countries other than the UK and India, use the relevant official tax authority’s current guidance. Even within an example jurisdiction, the cited treatment does not replace checking the tax year, eligibility category, income, allowances, and reporting obligations that apply to you.

Keep the calculation auditable

A small worksheet makes estimates easier to check and update. Record the source for each input, including the deposit terms and the tax assumptions. Keep the currency consistent across principal, interest, and tax; if a conversion is needed, state the currency and conversion basis used rather than combining unlike amounts.

  • Principal: the amount placed on deposit.
  • Term: start date, maturity date, and the period the return covers.
  • Gross interest: the expected amount before tax, based on the bank’s stated terms.
  • Tax assumption: jurisdiction, tax year, relevant allowance or threshold, and how tax attributable to the interest was estimated.
  • Tax withheld: the amount, if any, shown or expected to be deducted by the bank; record separately from estimated final tax.
  • Net interest and return: gross interest less attributable tax, then divided by principal for the same term.

Label estimates as estimates. If tax depends on total annual income, the return can only be an estimate until the rest of the tax calculation is known. Recalculate if your income, eligibility for an allowance, or the applicable tax year changes. An estimate made for one person cannot be carried over as the answer for another depositor merely because the principal and deposit rate are identical.

Common calculation errors

  • Calling the advertised rate the after-tax return. The advertised rate is ordinarily a gross product figure; calculate gross interest for the term, then subtract the tax attributable to that interest.
  • Using gross interest as the numerator. The after-tax return uses net interest, not the amount before tax.
  • Applying one assumed rate to every depositor. Tax residence, tax year, other income, allowances, and local rules can change the result.
  • Treating withholding as the final bill. Keep amounts deducted at source separate until you know how the tax authority treats them in the final calculation.
  • Comparing different terms without adjustment. A return for one term cannot be directly ranked against a return for a different term without making the period basis clear.
  • Ignoring compounding and payout terms. The gross interest depends on whether interest is reinvested, paid out, or calculated under another stated convention.
  • Overlooking access conditions. If early withdrawal changes the interest, the maturity estimate is not necessarily the amount you would receive after withdrawing early.

What the result does—and does not—tell you

The after-tax return is a useful way to compare the interest left from deposits when principal, period, tax assumptions, and calculation method are aligned. It does not by itself describe access to the money, the effect of early withdrawal, or whether a quoted rate will remain available for a different term. Nor does a single percentage answer your tax filing obligations; use the relevant official guidance to determine how interest must be reported and whether further tax is due.

For a reliable estimate, start with the deposit’s actual gross interest, calculate tax under the rules that apply to you, and preserve the assumptions beside the answer. If any of those tax inputs are unknown, show the result conditionally—for example, as a net return using a stated estimated tax amount—rather than presenting a universal fixed-deposit tax rate.
