The international UPI services documented by NPCI cover QR payments at select merchants abroad and eligible remittances coming into India—not a general-purpose transfer from India to any overseas bank account. For an outward transfer, compare an international bank wire with remittance providers that support your exact route.
The right choice depends on the sender and recipient countries, amount, currency, purpose, funding method and payout method. Compare live quotes for the same amount at roughly the same time, focusing on how much the recipient will get and when—not just the advertised transfer fee.

What each option can do
“UPI,” “bank transfer” and “remittance service” are not three interchangeable ways to send money abroad. They describe different payment systems and services, and the direction of the payment matters.

UPI: international merchant payments and eligible inward remittances
NPCI describes UPI Global Acceptance as a way for users to pay at select international merchant locations by scanning a QR code, using an Indian bank account through a UPI-powered app. It is a payment to a participating merchant—not a general transfer to an overseas individual’s bank account. Your bank and app must support the feature, and you may need to activate it for the relevant account.
#1 Best Overall
NPCI also documents Foreign Inward Remittance (FIR), which lets eligible users receive funds from abroad into an Indian UPI-linked bank account through participating institutions. This is money moving into India. Support depends on the sending country and bank, the receiving bank, and the recipient’s UPI app. Check current availability and conditions with NPCI and the relevant institutions; participation can change.
NPCI’s FAQ describes UPI as an instant system for transfers between bank accounts. It gives a general limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction for normal UPI transactions and up to ₹2 lakh for certain listed categories, including Foreign Inward Remittances. Those FAQ figures are not a guarantee of the limit available for a particular cross-border service: the participating bank or app may apply its own current conditions.
International bank wire: a bank-mediated outward transfer
An international wire is an outward cross-border bank transfer. The sender arranges it through a bank, which may ask for forms or declarations, apply an exchange rate, and use one or more correspondent banks to route the payment. The recipient normally receives funds through a bank account, but the process, eligibility and paperwork depend on the bank, route and reason for payment.

A remittance provider offers transfers on supported routes and may pay out to a bank account or another supported method. The available destination, currency, funding options, fees, exchange rate, delivery estimate and recipient requirements differ by route. A provider’s service for one country pair does not establish that it offers the same service—or any service—for another.

Compare the options before choosing
| Option | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| UPI international QR payment | Paying a merchant at a select overseas location that accepts the relevant QR payment. | Whether your bank and app support the feature; whether it is activated; merchant acceptance; the amount shown in foreign currency and INR; the rate, fees and applicable limits. |
| UPI Foreign Inward Remittance | Receiving an eligible payment from abroad into an Indian UPI-linked bank account. | Whether the sender’s country and bank, your receiving bank and your app participate; the current transaction cap and processing conditions. |
| International bank wire | Sending funds through a bank where its route, payment purpose and documentation requirements fit your needs. | Recipient amount after conversion and deductions; the bank’s exchange rate and fees; taxes; fee allocation; correspondent charges; processing estimate; required documents and purpose eligibility. |
| Remittance provider | Sending through a provider that supports your particular country pair, currency and payout method. | A same-time quote for the same amount; recipient amount; rate and fee; funding and payout methods; arrival estimate; cancellation rules; recipient action or identification; destination availability. |
This comparison cannot identify a universal cheapest or fastest option. A useful comparison needs the exact corridor—the sender’s country, recipient’s country and the currencies involved—as well as the amount and payment method. If you are paying an overseas merchant, that is a different use case from sending money to a person’s bank account.
How to compare the real cost
The practical question is: How much will the recipient actually get, and when? A low or zero headline transfer fee does not answer it. Exchange rates, separate bank charges, taxes and deductions along the payment route can change the final amount.
Use the recipient amount as the main comparison
Enter the same send amount, currencies, funding method and payout method in each eligible provider’s quote tool, as close together in time as practical. Compare the stated recipient amount and delivery estimate. Rates and fees can change, and quotes are specific to the route and payment method.

A transfer fee that appears small may be offset by a less favorable exchange rate; conversely, a higher explicit fee does not by itself prove that the recipient will get less. The quote’s final payout amount is the useful figure, subject to any deductions the quote does not include.

Account for bank and intermediary charges
A bank wire can involve the sending bank’s transfer and cable charges, an exchange-rate margin, applicable taxes, and charges from correspondent or receiving banks. Central Bank of India explains that a cross-border payment may pass through one or more correspondent banks and that they may deduct their fees from the money in transit. As a result, a sender’s estimate may not equal the amount credited to the recipient.
Ask the bank whether the quote includes intermediary and receiving-bank costs and how fees are allocated. Wire instructions may offer an option such as OUR, under which the sender bears local and overseas charges, or a shared-cost arrangement such as SHA. Confirm what the selected option actually covers with the bank; fee treatment and availability are bank- and transaction-specific.
Read “no transfer fee” carefully
Western Union’s India international bank-transfer page advertises no transfer fee for that route and also says the company makes money from currency exchange. That offer is not evidence that the transfer is free overall or the cheapest available. Compare the exchange rate and the final amount shown for the recipient, along with any other charges relevant to the transaction.
Example of a bank’s published wire charges
HSBC India’s outward foreign-currency wire schedule, labeled 1 April 2026, lists a charge of 0.3% of the value, with a minimum of INR 100 and maximum of INR 1,500, plus an INR 200 cable charge and applicable taxes for the stated wire category. It lists an additional INR 1,200 plus taxes for a transaction selected as “OUR,” where the remitter bears local and overseas charges. These are figures from one bank’s published schedule for the specified category—not a market average, a price for every HSBC customer or a quote for another bank. Check the bank’s applicable terms and current tariff before sending.

How long transfers take—and why they can be delayed
Delivery estimates are route- and transaction-dependent, not universal service promises. Funding method, operating hours, regulatory checks, destination availability and recipient action can all affect the outcome.
Bank wires
Ask the bank for an estimate for your specific route and find out when its estimate begins—for example, after it accepts the instructions or after funds are received. A correspondent bank may be involved in transit. The sources do not establish one standard wire-delivery time that applies across banks, destinations and purposes, so use the estimate supplied for the actual transaction.
Remittance providers
Wise reports that 74% of its transfers arrive in under 20 seconds and 95% in less than a day on its 2026 service page. Wise says timing depends on the route and how the transfer is funded. These are company-reported figures across its transfers, not independent results or a promise for a specific payment. Check the live estimate shown for your own transfer.
Western Union identifies possible causes of delays or unavailable service, including the amount, destination, currency, regulatory or foreign-exchange issues, recipient action, identification requirements, and time-zone or service-hour differences. Check whether the recipient must provide information or take another step, and whether the destination and currency are available for the intended payout.

UPI use cases
NPCI describes UPI as an instant payment system, but that description should not be treated as a timing guarantee for every cross-border service. FIR depends on participating institutions and the route. Confirm the applicable handling and processing conditions with the sender’s bank, recipient’s bank and app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make a like-for-like comparison
- Specify the route. Write down the country you are sending from, the recipient’s country, the send currency and the currency the recipient needs. Confirm that the service supports this exact corridor.
- Identify the payment purpose. Tell the bank or provider what the payment is for and check eligibility and documentation before comparing prices. An available transfer route is not necessarily eligible for every purpose.
- Set the amount and deadline. Compare the same amount and decide when the money needs to arrive. If the recipient needs a particular amount, work backward from that payout rather than comparing only how much you pay.
- Choose the payout method. Compare bank-account payout with other methods only if both are suitable and available on your route. Make sure the recipient can use the selected method and meet any required steps.
- Get current quotes. Check your bank’s applicable tariff and quote tools for eligible remittance providers close together in time. Enter the same amount, funding method and payout method. Record the recipient amount, rate, fee and estimated arrival.
- Check what the quote excludes. Ask whether taxes, cable charges, correspondent-bank deductions or recipient-bank charges may apply. For a bank wire, confirm the fee-allocation option and whether it changes the amount the recipient may receive.
- Confirm requirements and submit only after checking the details. Verify recipient information, identification or documents, transaction purpose, limits and any necessary activation. For a UPI merchant payment, review the displayed amount and charges before confirming; for FIR, verify that the relevant institutions participate.
What can go wrong, and what to check
- The service does not support the destination. Provider coverage and UPI participation vary. Check the exact country, bank, app, currency and payout method rather than relying on a general claim that a service sends money internationally.
- The recipient gets less than expected. A wire may incur correspondent-bank deductions, and a quote may not account for every receiving-side charge. Ask who can deduct fees and whether the displayed amount is guaranteed or an estimate.
- The transfer is delayed. Check the provider’s stated reason and whether it needs information, identity verification or action from the recipient. Service hours, time zones, regulatory checks and funding method can affect timing.
- The payment is rejected or held. Confirm that the transaction purpose is supported and that the names, account details and documents meet the bank’s or provider’s requirements. Contact the institution handling the transfer for the specific reason and next step.
- A promotional fee looks better than the final quote. Compare the recipient amount and exchange rate, not the fee label alone. A fee-free offer does not establish the lowest total cost.
- A limit shown in a general UPI FAQ does not match the app. Treat NPCI’s published figures as general limits for the stated categories, not as confirmation of a particular cross-border transaction’s permitted amount. Check the current limit and conditions with the participating bank or app.
Which option should you use?
Use the transaction’s direction and purpose to narrow the choices first:
- Paying an overseas merchant in person: consider UPI Global Acceptance only if the merchant accepts the relevant QR payment and your bank and app support and have activated it. Review the displayed INR and foreign-currency amounts, rate and fees before confirming.
- Receiving money from abroad into India: check whether UPI FIR is available for the sender’s country and bank, your receiving bank and your app. Confirm the current cap and processing requirements with the participating institutions.
- Sending from India to someone’s overseas bank account: compare an international bank wire with remittance providers that support the exact route, purpose and payout method. The documented UPI services above do not establish a general outbound transfer to any overseas bank account.
Choose based on the live recipient amount, total costs, delivery estimate, eligibility and requirements—not a provider’s headline fee or a speed statistic from a different route. If the difference between quotes is small, the more predictable arrival estimate, clearer fee allocation or easier recipient process may matter more than a marginal price advantage.
