To check your pay in India, do two separate calculations: compare the wage components counted by the applicable minimum-wage notification with its rate for your work and pay period, then subtract the employee-side deductions actually withheld from your gross pay. The right wage rate depends on the governing government, employment, worker category, area and effective date; there is no single figure that can be applied to every worker.
Start by separating the two calculations
A minimum-wage check asks whether the wages counted under the applicable notification meet the prescribed floor for your circumstances. A take-home check asks whether the pay credited to you reconciles with your payslip’s earnings and deductions. They are related, but one does not answer the other: a net-pay figure below gross pay is normal when deductions apply, while a minimum-wage comparison cannot be made from net pay alone.

Keep three payslip concepts distinct:
- Gross earnings: the earnings recorded for the pay period before employee-side deductions.
- Net pay: the amount left after those deductions and generally expected to match the salary credit, subject to any separately explained adjustment.
- CTC (cost to company): an employer’s broader cost figure. It may include employer-side contributions or benefits that are not money withheld from your gross pay.
Use the payslip and the applicable official wage notification as separate inputs. A payslip’s labels do not, by themselves, decide which components count toward the minimum-wage comparison.

If your pay credit is lower than gross earnings, that alone does not show that your wage is below the minimum: first reconcile deductions, then assess the counted wages against the correct notified floor. Conversely, a net amount that seems reasonable does not prove minimum-wage compliance, because the wage-floor test is based on the applicable rate and wage components, not simply the final bank credit.

Find the minimum-wage rate that applies to your work
Before comparing amounts, identify the correct schedule. The Ministry of Labour & Employment describes central and state governments as responsible for minimum wages within their respective spheres. Your employer’s location alone may not settle which sphere applies; establish the relevant employment and governing notification for your case.
Use primary official material for the actual rate: the Ministry’s notifications for relevant central-sphere employments, or the appropriate state or union-territory labour department’s order for a state-sphere rate. A general explainer or an old table can help you understand terminology, but it cannot replace the notification effective for the pay period you are checking.
Record the comparison details
Write down the details below before looking up a rate. If one is missing, the number you find may belong to a different worker, place or period.
- Work location and sphere: the state or union territory, and whether the employment is governed by a central- or state-sphere rate.
- Employment or industry: the scheduled employment or other employment category identified by the applicable notification.
- Worker category: the skill level or other classification used in that schedule.
- Area: the area classification, if the notification divides the jurisdiction into areas.
- Effective date: the dates covered by the wage order, not just its publication date.
- Pay period and time worked: the period covered by your payslip and the days or hours worked during it.
- Counted wage components: the components the governing law or notification includes for the comparison.
Use a Ministry of Labour & Employment notification for the relevant central-sphere employment, or the appropriate state or union-territory labour department’s official order for a state-sphere rate. Check the notification in force for the pay period you are reviewing. Do not use an old table merely because it is easy to find.
Keep the notification itself with your notes. Record its title or identifying details, the date it was issued, the effective period, and the table row that matches your employment and worker category. If you are comparing a payslip from an earlier month, look for the order that applied then; the newest order may not govern that past period, and an order’s publication date is not necessarily the same as its effective date.
Read the rate and its units carefully
A notification may state rates by time period or worker category and may separately describe components. Record the rate exactly as published, including whether it is daily or monthly and what it covers. Compare it with a payslip covering the same period. If the worker joined, left, took unpaid leave or otherwise worked only part of a period, account for the time actually worked using the notification’s method. If it does not explain a conversion you need, state any assumption transparently and ask payroll or the relevant labour authority how the rate should be applied rather than treating an assumed conversion as a legal conclusion.
Avoid casually converting a daily figure to a monthly one, or vice versa, with a convenient divisor. The workdays or hours used for a conversion can materially change the comparison, and the governing schedule may specify how to apply a rate. If you have to show an illustrative calculation before obtaining an answer, label the workday assumption clearly and keep it separate from the official rate.

What VDA means on a payslip
VDA means Variable Dearness Allowance. It is a cost-of-living allowance linked to the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW). It may appear as a separate line or be reflected within the notified wage rate; how it is presented depends on the applicable schedule and payroll format.
For central-sphere rates, the Ministry’s Annual Report 2024–25 says VDA is revised twice a year, effective 1 April and 1 October. States and union territories can have their own rates, revision schedules and instruments, so do not assume the central revision dates or amount apply to a state-sphere worker. Consult the official order for the applicable sphere and effective date.
The same annual report says central-sphere minimum-wage rates including VDA were effective from 1 October 2024. That is the status described in that report, not confirmation of the current rate in October 2026. A later notification may supersede it. Do not carry forward an older VDA amount or quote it as current without checking the latest applicable order.
In practical terms, treat VDA as part of the rate only as the relevant order describes it. Do not calculate an extra CPI-linked amount yourself from a general inflation figure or assume that a line labelled “special allowance” is VDA for every legal purpose. Check the notification’s terminology, amount, effective date and stated components, then compare that information with the way payroll has shown the allowance.
Compare the notified wage floor with your payslip
Once you have the right rate and period, identify which payslip components the applicable notification counts. There is no safe universal rule that every allowance, reimbursement, bonus or employer contribution counts—or that none do. Follow the governing notification and applicable rules; if the treatment is unclear, request a written component-wise explanation.
- Copy the notified rate. Record its jurisdiction, employment, worker category, area, effective dates, time unit and stated wage components.
- Match the pay period. Select the corresponding period on your payslip and note the time worked. Do not compare a full-period rate with a partial-period payment without accounting for the relevant period.
- Identify counted earnings. Separate the wage components relevant to the notification from other lines. Keep the source for each classification so the calculation can be reviewed.
- Put both sides on the same basis. Use the notification’s conversion or proration method where stated. If you must make a workday assumption, label it and do not present the result as a definitive legal finding.
- Compare and document. Show the notified amount, the period and components counted, and the resulting difference. A possible shortfall is a reason to ask for clarification, not by itself a final legal determination.
Do the comparison before subtracting employee-side deductions. Deductions explain why net pay is less than gross pay, but they do not answer which earnings count toward the notified wage floor. Keep the two worksheets separate so a deduction question does not obscure a wage-component question.
A useful worksheet is:
| Item | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Applicable schedule | Government sphere, employment, worker category and area |
| Rate and effective period | Official rate, its unit and the notification dates |
| Period worked | Pay period and days or hours relevant to the calculation |
| Counted wage components | Only the components treated as wages under the applicable notification |
| Comparison | Notified rate and comparable counted wages, expressed on the same basis |
For illustration only, if a notification set a hypothetical monthly floor of ₹M for a full period and the comparable counted wages for that same period were ₹W, the difference would be ₹M − ₹W. M and W are variables, not current statutory rates. A real comparison requires the actual notification and facts listed above.

Calculate take-home pay from the payslip
For a particular pay period, use the amounts actually shown as gross earnings and employee-side deductions:

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Net pay = gross earnings for the period − employee-side deductions withheld for the period.
Add the employee deductions listed on the slip, then subtract that total from gross earnings. Common entries can include an employee provident-fund contribution, professional tax where applicable, tax deducted at source (TDS), and authorized recoveries. Include a line only if it is actually withheld from your pay for that period. Do not subtract employer-side PF, insurance or gratuity a second time just because it appears in a CTC breakdown; those amounts are not employee deductions unless the payslip shows an actual deduction from gross pay.
For a purely illustrative calculation, if gross earnings are ₹X and the employee-side deductions listed for the period total ₹Y, net pay is ₹X − ₹Y. X and Y are placeholders for your own figures, not typical salary amounts or a tax estimate.
Then compare the result with the net-pay or bank-credit figure. If the two differ, check whether the payslip includes an adjustment, arrears, a recovery, a separate payment or a timing difference. Preserve the payslip and the corresponding credit record so payroll can explain a mismatch against the same period.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a clean reconciliation, write the gross figure and pay-period dates at the top of a note, list each employee-side deduction on its own line, total those deductions, and show the subtraction. This makes it easier to spot a repeated line, a number copied from the wrong month, or an employer contribution mistakenly treated as a deduction. If the slip has a net-pay figure, compare your result with that figure before comparing it with the bank credit.
Understand where TDS and the standard deduction fit
Monthly TDS is a withholding toward an annual income-tax calculation; it is not calculated reliably by treating one month’s gross pay as the whole tax picture. An estimate requires the relevant annual salary, applicable tax regime, taxable allowances and perquisites, eligible deductions, declarations and other income. Your circumstances and the tax year matter.

The Income Tax Department’s salary-deduction guidance consulted on 9 October 2026 gives standard-deduction ceilings of ₹75,000 under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the normal regime, subject to applicable rules and salary limits. These are tax-year-sensitive limits used in the annual taxable-income calculation. A standard deduction is not an additional fixed cash amount to subtract from each monthly payslip. The TDS line on the slip is the withholding actually taken for that period; do not replace it with the annual standard-deduction figure.
If the TDS looks unexpected, compare the payroll estimate with your annual income and tax declarations, and ask payroll which regime and assumptions it used. A payslip arithmetic check can confirm the deduction recorded, but cannot establish your final annual tax liability.

Keep the time frames straight: the salary and withholding on one payslip cover a pay period, while the standard deduction is used in the annual taxable-income calculation subject to the applicable rules. Do not divide ₹75,000 or ₹50,000 by twelve and treat the result as a monthly benefit or automatic reduction to TDS. The annual figure does not tell you what payroll must withhold in a particular month.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when a number does not match
If the wage comparison appears below the floor
- Recheck the sphere, employment, worker category, area and notification effective dates.
- Confirm that you used the correct pay period and accounted for time worked using the official method.
- Ask payroll for a written breakdown of the wage components it counted and the rate it applied.
- If the explanation does not resolve the discrepancy, contact the relevant labour authority with the notification, payslip and your calculation. Describe the issue as a discrepancy for review, rather than assuming a generic calculation establishes a legal violation.
If net pay does not match your arithmetic
- Check that you used the gross-pay figure for the same period as the deductions.
- Re-add each employee-side deduction and verify whether any adjustment or recovery is listed separately.
- Check that employer-side CTC entries have not been treated as deductions from your pay.
- Ask payroll to reconcile the payslip’s net figure with the bank credit for that exact pay period.
When asking for help, provide the pay period, applicable notification or rate, worker classification, time worked and the component-wise calculation. That makes it easier to distinguish a wrong schedule, a period mismatch, a component-classification question and a simple payslip arithmetic error.
Keep a copy of the payslip, the bank-credit record and the official order you used. If the issue involves VDA, include the effective date of the rate and the line where payroll has shown it. A concise written question—what rate and components were applied, and how the period was calculated—helps focus the response on the precise mismatch.
Keep legal and tax updates in view
The Ministry describes the Code on Wages, 2019 as subsuming provisions of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, and says minimum wages apply across employments under the Code. Its official site lists Draft Code on Wages (Central) Rules, 2025 as draft pre-published rules. A draft is not a final rule; do not infer commencement or implementation details from a draft listing alone. For an individual wage check, use the current official notification and any applicable final rules or orders, rather than relying on a general summary or a historical rate table.

The practical result is a pair of traceable calculations: a minimum-wage comparison tied to the right official schedule and counted components, and a net-pay reconciliation tied to the deductions actually withheld. Keeping those calculations separate makes it clearer whether a question is about the applicable wage floor, payroll classification, tax withholding or the amount credited.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is VDA in salary?
VDA means Variable Dearness Allowance, a cost-of-living allowance linked to the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW). Whether it appears as a separate payslip line or within a notified rate depends on the applicable schedule and payroll format. Check the official order for the jurisdiction and effective date that apply to your work.
How do I calculate my take-home salary from my payslip?
For the same pay period, subtract the employee-side deductions actually withheld from gross earnings: net pay = gross earnings − employee-side deductions. Common entries may include employee PF, professional tax where applicable, TDS and authorized recoveries. Do not subtract employer-side contributions included in CTC unless they are actually withheld from your pay.
How do I know which minimum-wage rate applies to me?
Identify the governing central or state sphere, employment, worker category or skill level, area classification if used, effective date and pay period. Then check the official Ministry of Labour & Employment notification or the relevant state or union-territory labour department order. A national figure or a rate from another category may not apply to your case.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does VDA change every month?
The Ministry of Labour & Employment’s Annual Report 2024–25 describes central-sphere VDA revisions twice a year, effective 1 April and 1 October. State and union-territory rates may follow their own instruments and schedules, so verify the order governing your employment rather than assuming the central cadence applies.
Is the standard deduction an amount taken out of every monthly payslip?
No. The standard deduction is used in the annual taxable-income calculation; it is not an extra fixed cash deduction from each month’s pay. Income Tax Department guidance consulted on 9 October 2026 gives ceilings of ₹75,000 under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the normal regime, subject to the applicable rules and salary limits. TDS is the amount actually withheld for the pay period.
Do employer PF, insurance or gratuity reduce take-home pay?
Not merely because they appear in a CTC breakdown. The take-home calculation subtracts employee-side deductions actually withheld from gross pay. Check the payslip to distinguish an employer contribution from an amount deducted from your earnings.
The Bottom Line
Use the current official wage notification to check the right rate, VDA, category, area, date and counted wage components. Separately reconcile take-home pay by subtracting only employee-side deductions actually withheld from gross earnings. Do not use net pay as the wage-floor test, or treat CTC and annual tax deductions as monthly payroll deductions.
