China Construction Bank (CCB) has two listed ordinary-share lines: Hong Kong H-shares, ticker 939 on the Main Board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited, and Shanghai A-shares, ticker 601939 on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. To buy either, you need a securities intermediary that offers access to the relevant market or, for an eligible A-share, an applicable Stock Connect route—and that accepts customers from your jurisdiction. The two codes, board-lot sizes and trading arrangements are not interchangeable.
This guide explains how to identify the listing, check access and account terms, and place an order without assuming that a particular investor can use a particular route. It is procedural information, not a recommendation to buy CCB or an assessment of its valuation, financial condition or suitability for you.

Choose the CCB listing you intend to buy
CCB’s General Shareholder Information page identifies two ordinary-share listings. Its H-shares trade in Hong Kong under ticker 939; its A-shares trade in Shanghai under ticker 601939. The issuer says the H-shares were listed on 27 October 2005 and the A-shares on 25 September 2007. Those dates and codes identify the listings; they do not establish that a particular intermediary currently offers either one to you.

| Share line | Exchange and code | Issuer-published board lot | Access question |
|---|---|---|---|
| H-shares | SEHK Main Board, 939 | 1,000 shares | Does your intermediary support Hong Kong trading for your account and jurisdiction? |
| A-shares | SSE, 601939 | 100 shares | Can you access this security through a route your intermediary offers, and is it currently eligible under that route? |
The lot sizes are figures published by CCB. They are not a promise that every intermediary will accept every order in exactly that size: confirm the account’s current order rules and any odd-lot handling before trading. Do not assume that selecting a CCB name in a search result is enough. Check the displayed exchange and security description as well as the code, particularly if search results show both share lines.

How access to each listing differs
Hong Kong H-shares
For ticker 939, the practical requirement is an intermediary that offers SEHK trading to customers in your location. Before funding an account, establish whether the service supports this specific market, what account or identity checks apply, how orders are handled, and what fees and currency-conversion terms apply. No universal provider, country-by-country availability, fee schedule, or account minimum is established; those details must come from the intermediary you would use.
Shanghai A-shares
For ticker 601939, overseas investors may have access to eligible mainland-listed securities through Northbound Stock Connect, subject to the program’s rules and the intermediary’s offering. CCB (Asia)’s page describes its own Northbound service; that example is not a universal account specification. It says its service requires an RMB settlement account and describes customer, order and settlement conditions specific to that service. Another intermediary may have different requirements, or may not offer that route to you at all.
Stock Connect is not unrestricted direct access to every Shanghai-listed security. Eligibility can change, trading calendars can differ, and quota or foreign shareholding limits can affect orders or holdings. Check the security’s current eligibility and the rules applicable to your account close to the time you trade. A security that was accessible previously may not remain eligible on the same terms.

Steps to buy CCB shares
- Decide which share line you want. Write down the exchange and code: Hong Kong H-shares, SEHK Main Board ticker 939, or Shanghai A-shares, SSE ticker 601939. Do not substitute one for the other because both represent CCB shares; they are separately listed securities with different market access and trading arrangements.
- Check local account availability. Ask the intermediary whether it accepts customers resident in your jurisdiction and supports the exact exchange or Stock Connect route you intend to use. For the A-share route, ask specifically whether it supports Northbound Stock Connect and whether CCB’s security is currently eligible for orders through that service. Availability for an unspecified country cannot be assumed.
- Confirm account setup and funding requirements. Review identity verification, account types, permitted currencies, settlement arrangements, and any minimum or account conditions. Ask whether currency conversion is automatic or must be arranged separately, what exchange rate or charges apply, and when funds must be available. For CCB (Asia)’s described Northbound service, an RMB settlement account is required; this should not be treated as a requirement for every provider or route.
- Read the order and fee rules before depositing funds. Confirm commissions and other charges, supported order types, share quantity increments, treatment of odd lots, order expiry or cancellation rules, and any market-specific limits. The issuer’s published lots are 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares, but the intermediary’s current interface and rules control what it will accept. No universal current fee or minimum purchase amount is established here.
- Check live security eligibility and market conditions. For a Stock Connect order, verify that the security remains eligible and that the relevant route is operating on the intended trading day. Mainland and Hong Kong trading days do not always align; quotas, foreign holding limits, or other restrictions can constrain buying or holding. Consult the intermediary’s current service notices and applicable rules rather than relying on a past eligibility listing.
- Find the listing in the order ticket. Search by both company name and the intended ticker, then verify that the instrument is identified as the Hong Kong or Shanghai listing you selected. If the venue or description is unclear, stop and ask the intermediary before submitting. Selecting the wrong code could result in an order for a different CCB share line than intended.
- Set order details deliberately. Select buy, confirm the account and market, enter the share quantity, choose an available order type, and review the price. CCB (Asia) describes its own Northbound service as permitting limit orders only. A limit order sets the maximum price you are willing to pay for a buy order, but it does not guarantee a fill: the order may remain unexecuted if a seller is not available at your limit while it is active.
- Review before submission. Check the code, venue, side, quantity, order type, limit price if applicable, currency and estimated charges. Make sure the order is within the share-lot and account limits displayed by your intermediary. Submit only after the order ticket matches your intended listing and terms.
- Check the order status and account records. An order may execute in full, execute partially, remain open, or be rejected. Review the confirmation and subsequent account records for execution quantity and price, charges, settlement, currency conversion and resulting holdings. For CCB (Asia)’s specified Northbound service, stock settlement is on trade day and cash settlement is on trade day plus one; other providers’ arrangements may differ.
What the published lot sizes do—and do not—tell you
CCB’s shareholder information states that a standard board lot is 1,000 H-shares or 100 A-shares. A board lot is useful when planning an order, but it is not a share price, a minimum account balance or an estimate of total cost. The cost of a purchase depends on the market price when the order executes, the quantity, any applicable currency conversion and charges, and the rules of the intermediary and market. No current CCB share price or universal transaction fee is established here.
Ask the intermediary whether it accepts orders outside the stated board lot and how it handles odd lots, including whether they can be bought or sold through the same order path. Do not infer that odd-lot orders will be accepted merely because the interface allows a quantity to be typed. A displayed order can still fail validation or be rejected under the intermediary’s rules.
Northbound Stock Connect: route-specific mechanics and constraints
CCB (Asia)’s Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect information describes the bank’s Northbound service for eligible SSE and SZSE securities. Its page gives several concrete service rules, but they belong to that provider’s described service and should not be generalized to all intermediaries or routes.

| Mechanic in CCB (Asia)’s described Northbound service | What a reader should verify |
|---|---|
| RMB settlement | Whether an RMB settlement account is required, how to fund it, and the conversion and settlement terms that apply to your account. |
| Limit orders only | Which order types the intermediary currently accepts through its own route and how long an order remains active. |
| No day trading | Whether the route prohibits buying and selling the same security within a day, and how that restriction is applied to your account. |
| Maximum order quantity of one million shares | The live maximum or other quantity controls in the order ticket and service terms before placing an order. |
| Stock settlement on trade day; cash settlement on trade day plus one | The settlement timetable, available-to-trade treatment and cash availability shown for your particular account. |
The same provider page warns that currency movements, changes to eligibility, quota constraints, foreign ownership limits and differences in market arrangements can affect the route. CCB (Asia)’s related risk disclosure adds that Stock Connect may not operate on every day a mainland market trades, foreign shareholding restrictions may restrict purchases or require reductions, and a recalled eligible security may become sell-only through the channel. These are possible route-level constraints, not a prediction that a specific restriction will affect your account or any particular CCB order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your intermediary reports that an order is unavailable, do not respond by assuming the security has changed its ticker or by repeatedly submitting the same order. Check the exact rejection message and current eligibility or service notice. The cause may relate to the route, a trading-day mismatch, a quota or holding restriction, account funding, an order parameter, or a temporary service condition. Ask the intermediary which rule applies before changing your order.
Costs, currencies and settlement: questions to ask first
The listing facts do not determine what an investor will pay to transact. Fees and availability depend on the intermediary, the account and current market rules. Before placing an order, request the applicable fee schedule and clarify which charges may appear in addition to the intermediary’s commission. Confirm the settlement currency for the listing and route, any conversion process, and whether the amount shown in an order preview includes all applicable charges. Do not treat a displayed share price as the final debit.

- Which commissions, exchange or other charges apply to this exact market and order?
- What currency will be used to fund, settle and report the trade?
- Will the intermediary convert currency automatically, or must you hold the settlement currency first?
- What rate, spread or conversion charge will apply, and when will the conversion occur?
- When will shares and cash be reflected as settled, and when can funds or holdings be used again?
- How are partial fills, cancelled orders and rejected orders reflected in charges and available cash?
For the provider-specific Northbound example above, CCB (Asia) states RMB settlement, stock settlement on trade day and cash settlement on trade day plus one. These details should not be used to estimate another provider’s settlement or to assume that all route participants have identical account procedures.

Security and market access risk
The fact that CCB has a ticker on an exchange does not guarantee that an intermediary will offer the security to every customer or that a specific customer can trade it on every date. Account jurisdiction, the available service, eligibility and market calendars all matter. Stock Connect’s access is conditional, and the cited disclosures describe potential quota, eligibility and foreign holding restrictions.

If the security, account balance and spending currency differ, exchange-rate movements and conversion charges can affect the total amount spent and the value of proceeds measured in your home currency. For Northbound Stock Connect, CCB (Asia) describes RMB settlement and specifically warns about currency risk. The relevant conversion and settlement terms are those applicable to your intermediary and account.

Order execution risk
A limit price controls the highest price you are willing to pay on a buy order, but a limit order can fail to execute. It can also execute only in part. A submission confirmation is not the same as a completed trade: check the order status and executed quantity before assuming you own the shares.
Holding and route restrictions
CCB (Asia)’s Stock Connect risk disclosure says foreign shareholding restrictions may limit purchases or require holdings to be reduced, and that an eligible security recalled from the program may be restricted to sales through that channel. Trading access may also be affected by differences in market calendars. These are not the full set of risks of owning bank shares or using a brokerage account; review the issuer and intermediary disclosures relevant to your investment.
Before you confirm: a practical checklist
- The order ticket shows the intended CCB line and exact exchange: 939 on the SEHK Main Board or 601939 on the SSE.
- Your intermediary accepts customers in your jurisdiction and supports the intended exchange or Stock Connect route.
- If using Northbound Stock Connect, you have checked current security eligibility, relevant trading-day availability and route restrictions.
- You understand the account, identity, currency, funding and settlement requirements that apply to your own provider.
- You have verified the order quantity rules, board-lot treatment, order types, fees and any relevant order limits.
- You have checked the order side, share quantity, order type, price and estimated charges before submitting.
- You know where to find the execution, settlement, fee and holding records after the order is placed.
Where to verify details and get help
Use CCB’s General Shareholder Information page for the issuer-published share codes, venues and board-lot information. CCB’s History page also records the listing dates and codes. For Northbound service mechanics, eligibility information and warnings described for that bank’s own service, consult China Construction Bank (Asia)’s Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect page and its Risk Disclosure for Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect. Its Securities Trading FAQ describes its own online banking account requirements; for example, it says a customer needs an online banking relationship and a securities trading account to use that service.
These issuer and provider pages do not replace the live terms for your account. Confirm current trading access, fees, eligibility, order handling, settlement and currency rules directly with the intermediary before acting. For a company-specific shareholder question, CCB’s Investor Relations page provides the issuer’s investor contact channels.
