Vanguard reports a 0.03% expense ratio as of April 28, 2026, a 0.01% three-year tracking error as of June 30, 2026, and a 0.01% 30-day median bid-ask spread as of August 11, 2026. These figures describe different things and should not be added together as a single cost.
VOO’s three measures at a glance
VOO is Vanguard’s S&P 500 ETF. Vanguard’s March 31, 2026 fact sheet says the fund seeks to track the S&P 500 Index and uses passive full replication. The three figures below answer separate questions: what the fund charges to operate, how variable its return gap from its benchmark has been, and what spread Vanguard reported as a trading-liquidity measure.

| Measure | What it describes | VOO figure and date |
|---|---|---|
| Expense ratio | Annual fund operating expenses, deducted from returns | 0.03% total, reported by Vanguard as of April 28, 2026; includes a 0.02% management fee and 0.01% other expenses. SEC prospectus |
| Tracking error | Variability over time in the fund’s return difference from its benchmark | 0.01% for the trailing three years, as of June 30, 2026. Vanguard product page |
| Bid-ask spread | Difference between the best quoted selling and buying prices | 0.01% 30-day median, as of August 11, 2026. This is a historical summary, not a live quote. Vanguard product page |
The percentages are not interchangeable. The expense ratio is a recurring fund expense; tracking error is a statistic about variability, not a fee; and the spread is a market quote or summary of quotes over a stated period. Brokerage commissions and intermediary fees can also apply and are outside the prospectus expense table.

The expense ratio describes an ongoing fund operating charge. Tracking error summarizes the historical consistency of returns relative to the benchmark. The spread is about the prices available when ETF shares are traded. Only the first is the stated annual operating expense ratio, and none of the three alone describes every possible expense or outcome for an investor.

What is VOO’s expense ratio?
An expense ratio is the fund’s annual operating expense expressed as a percentage of assets. Vanguard’s April 28, 2026 prospectus lists VOO’s total annual operating expenses as 0.03%: a 0.02% management fee plus 0.01% in other expenses. Vanguard says fund expenses cover management and administrative costs and are deducted from fund returns before investors receive them. They are generally not charged as a separate line-item debit to an investor’s account. Read the prospectus.
What 0.03% means in dollars
As simple arithmetic, 0.03% of $10,000 is $3 for a full year if the balance stays at $10,000 throughout. That is an illustration, not a Vanguard estimate of any particular investor’s actual expense. The dollar effect changes with the value invested and the time held.
For the same reason, the percentage is more useful than assuming every investor pays the same dollar amount. A different account value or holding period changes the arithmetic, and an account’s value may not stay constant. The $3 example isolates the expense-ratio calculation under its stated assumption; it is not a complete estimate of an investor’s total cost of owning or trading VOO.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe expense ratio does not include every possible cost of owning or trading VOO. The prospectus notes that brokerage commissions and intermediary fees may be charged separately. Those amounts depend on the investor’s broker or intermediary and are not part of the fund’s stated annual operating expense ratio.
When comparing expense ratios, use the current prospectus figures and check their reporting or effective dates. Also compare the expense categories that are included, rather than assuming that a percentage quoted in another source necessarily covers the same items. A low recurring fund expense can be useful, but it does not tell you what it will cost to execute a particular trade or exactly how the fund will perform against its benchmark.

What is VOO tracking error?
Tracking error measures how much the difference between a fund’s return and its benchmark return varies across observations over time. It is a risk statistic, not a charge and not a forecast. Vanguard reports VOO’s trailing three-year tracking error as 0.01% as of June 30, 2026. The figure belongs to that specific period and Vanguard’s stated calculation; it does not guarantee that VOO will match the index exactly in every future period. Vanguard displays tracking error for trailing three-, five- and ten-year periods, so a quoted value should always name its lookback window. Vanguard’s VOO data.
The period matters because a tracking-error value is a historical statistic tied to a particular window. Vanguard’s reported 0.01% is specifically a three-year figure as of June 30, 2026—not a timeless property of VOO, and not a prediction for the next three years. If the lookback period changes, the underlying observations being summarized change too. When quoting the figure, include both the three-year window and its as-of date so readers can tell what it represents.
Tracking error versus tracking difference
Tracking difference is the amount by which a fund’s return differs from its benchmark over a specified period. Tracking error is the variability of that difference over time. Put another way, a one-period shortfall or outperformance is a tracking difference; it is not, by itself, tracking error. Vanguard’s explanation of index tracking discusses the distinction and the factors behind benchmark-relative outcomes. Vanguard Canada: Index tracking.
This distinction is important when reading a performance comparison. If a fund lagged its benchmark over one stated period, that result describes the tracking difference for that period. It does not show how steady or variable the gap was across multiple observations. Tracking error addresses that variability; it does not, by itself, say whether the fund outperformed or underperformed the benchmark.
For comparisons between ETFs, first compare tracking differences for the same period and benchmark. Tracking-error values are meaningful to compare only when their calculation windows and methodologies are comparable. A low tracking error indicates more consistent benchmark-relative differences over the measured period; it does not tell you, by itself, whether the fund’s return was above or below the benchmark.

VOO seeks to track the S&P 500 Index and uses passive full replication, according to Vanguard’s March 31, 2026 fact sheet. Vanguard also says, “Low expenses minimize net tracking error.” That is a useful relationship to keep in mind, but it should not be read as saying that the expense ratio and tracking error are the same measure. The expense ratio is a fund charge; tracking error describes the variability of benchmark-relative return differences over a historical window. Vanguard VOO fact sheet.

What is VOO’s bid-ask spread?
The bid is the highest price a buyer is currently offering for an ETF share. The ask is the lowest price a seller is currently willing to accept. The difference between them is the bid-ask spread. Vanguard defines spreads as the difference between the highest price a buyer is willing to pay and the lowest price a seller is willing to receive. Vanguard: Get to know your investment costs.
If an investor buys at the ask and later sells at the bid, the spread can create an indirect trading cost. The actual effect depends on the quotes and execution price at both trades. Vanguard reports a 0.01% 30-day median bid-ask spread for VOO as of August 11, 2026. A median summarizes observations over a period; it is not the spread guaranteed for the next order. A live spread can change with market conditions, so check current quotes when deciding whether and how to trade.
The spread is therefore different from the expense ratio in both timing and form: it reflects the market’s current quoted prices rather than a recurring annual fund operating expense. It is also different from tracking error, which is not a trading quote. The reported 30-day median is useful context for assessing historical quoted liquidity, but it cannot tell an investor exactly what bid and ask will be available for a future order or what execution price the investor will receive.
Using spread data sensibly
- Compare like with like: a 30-day median should be compared with another 30-day median, not treated as equivalent to a live quote.
- Record the observation period or time and as-of date, since spreads are not fixed fund charges.
- Keep commissions and intermediary fees separate; they are not represented by the spread statistic or the prospectus expense ratio.
- Check the live bid and ask when considering a trade. The dated median is a summary of past observations, not a quote for the order you are about to place.
Vanguard describes spread as a useful measure of liquidity. For a practical comparison, use the same kind of spread statistic for each ETF and note when it was measured. Comparing a historical median for one fund with a momentary quote for another mixes different types of information. Even a clearly labeled spread statistic remains only one part of the trading-cost picture; any commission or intermediary charge should be considered separately.

How to compare the measures when choosing an ETF
Each measure helps answer a different comparison question. A useful comparison keeps the period, benchmark and type of statistic consistent rather than collecting percentages into one total.
| Question | What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| What recurring fund expense is reported? | Current prospectus expense ratios | Effective or reporting date, and the prospectus expense categories included |
| How did the fund perform relative to its benchmark? | Tracking difference | Same benchmark and same measurement period |
| How variable was the benchmark-relative gap? | Tracking error | Same calculation window and methodology |
| What might trading at quoted prices cost? | Bid-ask spreads using the same measure | Median versus live quote, observation window or time, and market conditions |
| Are there additional transaction charges? | Brokerage commissions or intermediary fees | Applicable charges at the investor’s broker or intermediary |
For example, a sound comparison starts by identifying each fund’s benchmark and comparing tracking differences over the same period. Then check whether the tracking-error figures cover the same lookback window and use comparable methodologies. For recurring expenses, use the current prospectuses and dates; for trading conditions, compare the same type of spread measure and note its observation period or time. Check applicable commissions or intermediary fees separately.
Do not add the expense ratio, tracking error and spread to create a universal cost percentage. The ratio is annual, the tracking-error statistic measures variability over time, and the spread is based on market quotes at a point in time or over a stated summary period. They do not share the same meaning or time basis. A reader who wants a cost view should consider the relevant operating expense, the spread associated with actual execution, and any separate fees—without counting tracking error as another charge.
Vanguard’s March 31, 2026 fact sheet says, “Low expenses minimize net tracking error.” Low operating expenses can help reduce a source of benchmark-relative drag, but the expense ratio alone does not determine the realized tracking difference or tracking error. Vanguard VOO fact sheet.
How to read VOO’s figures without confusing them
- For the recurring charge, use the prospectus expense ratio and its date: VOO’s prospectus dated April 28, 2026 reports 0.03% total annual operating expenses.
- For benchmark-relative consistency, identify whether the figure is tracking difference or tracking error. State the benchmark and period where available; Vanguard’s 0.01% VOO tracking-error figure is for the trailing three years as of June 30, 2026.
- For trading conditions, distinguish a historical median from the current bid and ask. Vanguard’s 0.01% figure is the 30-day median as of August 11, 2026, not a promise about an order placed later.
- For an overall cost view, consider the relevant fund expense, the spread associated with actual execution, and any commissions or intermediary fees separately. Do not add tracking error as if it were another fee.
These steps also help when an ETF page shows multiple percentages together. Before interpreting a number, identify what it measures, the date or period it covers, and whether it is a recurring fund expense, historical risk statistic or trading-market measure. If those labels are missing, seek the underlying product information or prospectus rather than treating every percentage as comparable.
