Working from home does not remove the legal, business, supplier, or customer-service responsibilities. There is no dependable beginner earnings figure or timeline established by the available official sources, so treat “start earning fast” as a goal—not a promise.
Choose how you will work
First decide whether you want to work as an employee, operate independently through a host agency, or establish a separate agency. These routes can differ in control, support, costs, supplier access, and responsibility. The details depend on the employer, host contract, business, and suppliers involved; the sources cited here do not establish standard market-wide terms.
| Route | What to clarify before committing | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Employee | Ask about job duties, training, compensation, schedule, and how bookings and supplier relationships are handled. | Not stated in the cited ASTA or IATAN materials. |
| Independent advisor working with a host | Get written terms for fees, commission split and payout timing, supplier access, booking and accounting tools, training, errors-and-omissions coverage, client ownership, termination, and restrictions. | ASTA says an independent advisor working with a host uses the identification number provided by that host. ASTA’s career guide explains this structure. |
| Separate agency | Determine the business’s registration and accreditation obligations, what identifiers fit its planned sales, and what operating costs and supplier relationships it will need. | ASTA discusses agency identification options; IATAN and IATA publish requirements and accreditation resources. Specific eligibility, costs, and terms depend on the route. ASTA, IATAN, IATA. |
A host can provide a route to operate as an independent advisor using the host’s identification number; it is not the same thing as creating your own agency accreditation. ASTA’s guide is a structural overview, not a substitute for reviewing a current host contract, official eligibility rules, or legal requirements.
Check local requirements before taking bookings
Do not assume every U.S. travel advisor needs the same license—or that accreditation by itself satisfies every legal requirement. IATAN specifically calls out seller-of-travel registration for businesses in Florida, Hawaii, or Washington. That list is a prompt to verify the rules that apply to you, not a complete state-by-state legal analysis. See IATAN’s accreditation requirements and fees.

- Check current requirements with the relevant state authority for the state where your business operates and any other jurisdiction relevant to your sales.
- Consider how your business structure, customer locations, and sales model affect what you must register or disclose.
- If the rules are unclear, consult qualified counsel before accepting bookings or client payments.
Work out which supplier identification or accreditation you need
Start with what you plan to sell and what credentials your employer or host provides. ASTA’s career guide describes ARC and non-air identification options, including IATAN and CLIA, and says advisors working through a host use the host’s number. These identifiers and accreditations are not interchangeable checkboxes, and a new advisor should not assume they need every one.
IATA offers accreditation options and publishes checklists and local financial criteria. Its Travel Agent’s Handbook resource page describes the handbook as binding for IATA-accredited agents. Confirm the current route, requirements, and costs directly with the relevant organization before applying.

IATAN’s requirements page lists documentation related to ownership and legal form and, for businesses in Florida, Hawaii, or Washington, seller-of-travel registration. As listed on that page on October 8, 2026, the fees include $110 for an Independent Contractor Business and $236 for a Host Service Location. Those are page-listed fees, not a guarantee that you qualify or that the amounts will remain unchanged; verify the live requirements and fee schedule before applying at IATAN’s requirements and fees page.
Learn the work before you market yourself
Travel advising involves more than choosing destinations. Build practical ability in supplier booking rules, itinerary design, destination knowledge, customer communication, recordkeeping, and responding to changes or disruptions. These are useful areas to learn; there is no single beginner curriculum established by the cited sources.

Consider training and professional credentials in context
Training can strengthen your knowledge, but a paid course or certification is not established here as a universal legal prerequisite to begin working. ASTA’s Verified Travel Advisor (VTA) program is a professional certification with eligibility criteria, not a blanket beginner license. ASTA’s eligibility page lists sales-volume routes of $500,000 in annual sales in at least one of the past two years, or $250,000 in each of the last five years; enrollees have two years to meet the sales requirements. These are program criteria, not earnings estimates. Check the current requirements at ASTA’s VTA eligibility page.
Choose an audience you can serve well
Pick a focus that connects your genuine knowledge with customer demand—for example, a destination or type of trip you can research and plan carefully. A specialty may help you define whom you serve, but it does not guarantee clients or income.

Make a plan for the time and costs
Before paying for a host, education, membership, or accreditation, put the likely expenses and work on paper. Ask providers for current written terms rather than relying on a general description of how the industry works.
- List one-time setup costs and recurring fees, including any host, accreditation, membership, software, or business expenses that apply to your route.
- Estimate the time needed for learning, marketing, researching trips, communicating with clients, and managing booking changes.
- Decide how you will keep records and manage customer issues, including what support your employer or host does—and does not—provide.
- Review contract terms for client ownership, payout timing, restrictions, and what happens if you leave.
- Plan how you will find and serve customers without assuming that a course, host, or credential will bring bookings.
The official sources cited here do not establish an average new-agent income, a typical time to first commission, or a guaranteed path to earnings. Avoid committing money on the strength of a promised income figure or quick timeline that is not supported by the specific program and written terms.
