You can skip paying to choose a particular seat and still fly: the airline will assign you a seat at no additional charge. What you give up is control over where you sit—and, unless a specific policy applies, the chance of sitting beside your travel companions. Before you pay, compare the full fare and seat costs, and check the rules that apply to your airline and trip.
What the seat-selection fee pays for—and how to skip it
A seat-selection fee generally buys the ability to choose a particular seat in advance. It is not a fee for the right to travel with a seat. Under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2024 final rule, when an airline or ticket agent offers paid seat selection, it must disclose that a seat is included in the fare and that an assignment purchase is not required to travel. If you buy a ticket without selecting a seat before purchase, a seat must be provided without additional charge when you travel. Read the DOT final rule.
To avoid the charge, leave the paid seat map without choosing a seat and continue to checkout. If you have already bought the ticket, decline paid advance selection and proceed to check-in. The airline will assign a seat, but it may not be the location you want, and the airline may not seat your group together.
The rule does not ban seat-assignment fees or require airlines to let you choose any seat for free. It also did not require seat-selection fees to be disclosed as critical ancillary fees at the beginning of booking. A seat map showing paid choices does not mean you must buy one to travel.

Compare the total fare before you book
Some basic-economy fares do not allow advance seat selection; other fares may include seat choice or offer it for a charge. Compare the itinerary’s total cost, including any seat fees you actually need, rather than judging by the base fare or assuming an upgrade is always cheaper than paying for seats. The DOT’s family travel tips and airline links recommend comparing fares and booking earlier when you want nearby seats, since nearby availability can shrink.
- Total cost: Add the base fare and the seat-selection charges needed by each traveler.
- Seat control: Decide whether choosing a specific location in advance matters to you.
- Group seating: Check whether the airline makes a relevant commitment and whether adjacent seats are available.
- Flexibility: Consider whether you can accept an airline-assigned seat and a possible change to the seat map or aircraft.
If you are traveling with a child 13 or under
The DOT’s family seating dashboard, last updated September 5, 2025, lists five U.S. carriers as offering a conditional commitment to seat a child age 13 or under next to an accompanying adult at no additional cost, across fare types. It lists four other carriers as not making that dashboard commitment.

These listings are not a guarantee that every family will be seated together in every circumstance. The DOT says the commitment depends on conditions including the child and adult being on the same reservation, adjacent seats being available at booking in the selected class of service, and no smaller replacement aircraft disrupting the seating plan. The group must fit the aircraft’s seating layout, and travelers should not change assigned seats once assigned. For airlines that assign seats, qualifying assignments are provided no later than the day before departure. On open-seating carriers, notify the gate agent before boarding begins. Before purchasing family tickets
- Check the DOT dashboard and the operating airline’s current family-seating policy; carrier terms can change.
- Put the child and accompanying adult on the same reservation. Airlines generally use the shared reservation record to identify a party.
- Book early if sitting together matters, because adjacent seats may no longer be available later.
After purchasing
- Check the seat assignments and contact the airline’s reservations team if the child and adult are not seated together. Ask whether the party can be seated together or, at minimum, whether each child can sit next to an adult.
- If tickets were booked separately, ask the airline whether it can link or cross-reference the reservations.
- Recheck the assignments before travel. An aircraft change can alter the seat map; allow time at the airport to raise a seating issue with staff.
- If the flight uses open seating and the applicable policy requires action, tell the gate agent before boarding starts.
A separate rule for some disability-related adjoining seats
If a parent or accompanying person needs to assist a child with a disability during the flight with a function that airline personnel are not required to perform, DOT family guidance says the airline must provide the adult an adjoining seat in the purchased class without charging for that seat. The passenger should self-identify to the airline; advance notice or early check-in may be required. This specific accommodation does not create a general right for every pair of passengers to sit together. The DOT explains the steps in its family travel guidance.
