How to Apply for an IPO in Australia and Check Your Allocation

Australian IPO applications follow each offer’s prospectus. Learn how to apply through the stated channel, check an allocation result and verify the shares in your holding record.

To apply for an IPO in Australia, follow the application route, eligibility rules, payment instructions and deadline in that offer’s current prospectus. The route may be through a participating broker, and applying does not guarantee an allocation. Check the result through the broker or contact channel named in the offer documents; check your broker account, CHESS record or share registry later to confirm the shares are recorded in your name.

Start with the IPO’s current prospectus

The prospectus sets out what securities are offered, who may apply, how to apply and the risks. ASIC MoneySmart advises investors to read it before deciding whether to invest: MoneySmart’s IPO guidance.

Before applying, check the latest prospectus and offer page for:

  • Which offer component is open to you, such as a broker firm, priority, employee or general offer, if the IPO has more than one.
  • Eligibility conditions, including residency, investor category, invitation requirements and any account requirements.
  • The opening and closing dates, application method and any minimum or maximum amount.
  • Payment instructions, scale-back or rejection provisions, and how any excess application money will be refunded.
  • The offer price, intended use of proceeds, company information and material risks.

Do not assume that a prospectus or application page for an earlier offer is still current. If you are unsure how to interpret the disclosure, MoneySmart recommends speaking with a broker or financial adviser.

Choose the application route stated in the offer

There is no single application channel for every Australian IPO. Some offers include a broker firm offer that is available only to clients who receive an invitation or allocation through a participating broker. Other routes may be described in the offer documents. Check the specific terms rather than assuming that every IPO is available through your existing broker or directly to the public.

For a broker firm offer, follow the broker’s instructions and the prospectus. The documents determine how applications are handled and may allow applications to be scaled back or rejected. A cited 2020 Ai-Media prospectus, for example, said the broker decided allocations among its retail clients; that describes that offer, not a universal allocation rule. You can review the example in the Ai-Media offer document.

For ordinary ASX share trading, investors use a CHESS-sponsoring broker. ASX explains the distinction between execution-only and full-service brokers and recommends comparing their fees and services: ASX guidance on buying shares. A broker is an intermediary, not a promise of IPO access or an allocation.

Submit the application and keep its confirmation

  1. Confirm the offer is open. Check the current offer page and prospectus for the application window and any eligibility or invitation conditions.
  2. Use the stated channel. Complete the prospectus application form or the participating broker’s portal as directed. Do not substitute a different channel unless the offer documents permit it.
  3. Enter the amount and payment details exactly as instructed. Check the minimum or maximum application, payment method, account details and deadline before submitting.
  4. Save the confirmation. Keep the application reference, confirmation message and relevant payment record so you can follow up with the broker or offer contact.
  5. Assess the investment separately from the mechanics. Consider the company’s financial position, business, management, offer valuation, use of funds and risks in the prospectus. A listing does not guarantee a gain.

Check your allocation, then confirm the holding

Allocation notification and proof of an issued shareholding are two different checks.

First, find out the application result

Check the broker’s IPO or application area and messages if you applied through a broker firm offer. If the documents name an offer information line or another contact channel, use that channel for the offer result. Otherwise, contact the broker or offer contact specified in the documents. Notification methods vary between offers; do not rely on a phone number or process from an old IPO.

The ASX Investor Portal is not a universal IPO-allocation checker. The initial result is communicated through the channel specified by the particular offer or broker.

Then, verify that the shares appear in a holding record

After allotment or issue and settlement, check the brokerage account and the ownership record applicable to your holding. The record may be CHESS-sponsored or issuer-sponsored.

  • CHESS-sponsored holding: ASX says CHESS statements show changes to holding details and are issued at month end when the balance changes. Physical statements generally arrive in the first two to three weeks after issue. See ASX information about CHESS statements.
  • Issuer-sponsored holding: Contact the company’s share registry for holding and SRN matters. ASX explains the difference between CHESS and issuer-sponsored holdings in its CHESS statements and holding information.

If the shares are not showing when you expect them, first contact the broker or registry responsible for that holding. A result notice may arrive before the corresponding holding statement.

How long the process may take

ASX’s listing-process guidance, reviewed in 2026, describes these general timeframes:

  • An exposure period of seven days begins when the prospectus is lodged; ASIC can extend it to up to fourteen days. ASX says applications cannot be accepted during this period.
  • A retail offer generally remains open for one to four weeks.
  • ASX estimates one to two weeks for the final stage covering offer close, allocation, listing and the start of trading.

These are general process estimates, not a timetable for a particular IPO. Use the dates in the current offer documents for your application and follow the broker’s or issuer’s updates. See ASX’s listing process guidance.

What to compare before applying

Before deciding whether or how to apply, compare the details that affect both access and the result:

  • Whether you meet the eligibility rules and whether the offer is actually available to you.
  • The application channel, deadline and any invitation or account requirements.
  • Broker fees and service level, if a broker is involved.
  • Payment, scale-back, rejection and refund terms.
  • How the offer will communicate its allocation decision and where the resulting holding will be recorded.
  • The prospectus’s information about valuation, use of proceeds, management, licences and risks.

There is no established general statistic for the odds of receiving an IPO allocation or the typical size of a retail scale-back. Those outcomes depend on the offer and its allocation arrangements.
