How to Answer “How Long Do You Plan on Working Here?”

Give a truthful answer about your likely time in the role: connect your interest to what you can contribute, and state any real time limit clearly.

Answer honestly without promising a number of years you cannot know. Explain why this role interests you, what you can contribute, and—if it is true—that you would like to stay and grow if the fit remains strong. If you already know you can work only for a defined period, say so and focus on the value you can deliver during that time.

What the interviewer may be asking

The question may be a way to understand whether you see the job as a short stop or a longer-term opportunity, whether your career aims fit the role, and whether there is room for you to contribute and develop. It may also be phrased as “How long do you expect to be employed by this company?” or “How long do you see yourself holding this role if hired?” These are common interpretations in career guidance, not a guarantee that every interviewer has the same motive.

“Where do you see yourself in five years?” is related, but it also asks about your direction. You can name a plausible skill, responsibility, or growth goal connected to the role without promising to keep the same job title for five years.

A simple structure for your answer

  1. Show specific interest. Mention a real feature of the position, team, organization, or work that appeals to you.
  2. Connect it to your contribution. Identify relevant experience or a skill you can use to help with the work.
  3. Give your honest outlook. If you hope to stay, say you would welcome the chance to grow there if the fit and opportunity remain strong. If you have a definite time limit, state the realistic timeframe.
  4. End with the work. Emphasize what you can deliver, rather than making a guarantee about an uncertain future.

For an ongoing role

“I’m looking for a role where I can contribute over the long term. The work on [specific responsibility or project] fits my experience in [skill], and I’d be interested in growing here as I deliver results. I can’t predict an exact number of years, but I’m excited about the possibility of building a lasting fit.”

Replace the bracketed details with accurate examples. Use the longer-term language only if it reflects your actual intentions.

For a known time limit

“I expect to be available through [accurate timeframe]. During that time, I can bring [relevant skill] to [specific team need], and I’m committed to doing strong work for the full period.”

Use this approach when the limit is real and relevant—for example, a fixed contract, seasonal availability, or a known move. You do not need to share unrelated personal details; explain only enough to set an honest expectation.

Adjust the answer to the type of job

  • Permanent, full-time role: Describe a genuine interest in contributing and potentially advancing. Do not frame a long-term hope as a certain promise.
  • Seasonal or summer job: Be clear about your availability window and show how you can contribute during the season.
  • Temporary or contract-to-hire role: State the defined period and whether you would welcome an extension or ongoing role, if that is true.
  • Part-time work alongside study or other commitments: Explain the schedule or time horizon you can reliably meet, then connect it to the work you can do.

What to avoid

  • A made-up tenure: There is no universal minimum number of years to promise. Do not invent a figure just to sound committed.
  • An absolute guarantee: “Forever” or a promise that you will stay for a precise period can imply certainty about future events you cannot control.
  • A vague answer with no connection to the job: Add a specific reason for your interest and a concrete contribution you could make.
  • Unnecessary disclosure: If a real constraint affects your availability, state the relevant timeframe without offering unrelated personal information.
