Henry Samueli and his wife, Susan, have given more than $1 billion through the Samueli Foundation, according to IEEE’s 2025 coverage, and the foundation has said it is aiming to distribute about another $1 billion during the decade. The figures describe cumulative giving and a forward-looking goal—not a single audited total or a guaranteed annual payout.

How much has Henry Samueli given away?

IEEE reported in 2025 that the Samueli Foundation had distributed more than $1 billion. Lindsey Spindle of Samueli Family Philanthropies told IEEE Spectrum that the foundation was on track to give about another $1 billion during the decade. These are different kinds of figures: one describes giving already distributed, while the other is a projection.

There is no single exact all-in total for the Samuelis’ giving established by those figures. They refer to different dates and scopes, and do not provide an audited consolidated figure for all family giving. The foundation is the family’s principal philanthropic vehicle, but the reported figures should not be treated as a current 2026 total or as a tally of every gift made through related organizations.

Where does the Samueli Foundation give?

The foundation identifies STEM education, integrative health, youth services, social justice, and Jewish culture among its areas of focus. IEEE’s 2025 description highlighted STEM education, underserved youth, and integrative health. The family is also linked to sports-related nonprofits, including the Anaheim Ducks Foundation, San Diego Gulls Foundation, and Rinks Foundation.

The sources identify several areas and organizations, not a fixed percentage allocation among them. They do not establish that every grant follows one unified theory of change.

What are the Samuelis’ largest documented gifts?

Gift Recipient and purpose What the figure represents
$200 million UC Irvine; established the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences A 2017 gift from Henry and Susan Samueli; UC Irvine described it as the university’s largest gift at the time.
$10 million UCLA engineering; supports as many as 20 endowed chairs and matches qualifying donations dollar for dollar A gift announced by the Samueli Foundation; the announcement specifies the matching structure and intended chair support.

The two gifts serve different institutions and purposes, so their amounts alone do not show how the family’s overall giving is divided. The UCLA announcement describes a matching gift, not a claim that $10 million is the total of all qualifying donations ultimately raised.

Why support engineering education and integrative health?

Samueli’s background as an engineer and Broadcom co-founder is reflected in support for engineering education, including the UCLA endowed-chair initiative. The 2017 UC Irvine gift established a college focused on health sciences and integrative health, an area of interest for the Samueli family.

Those institutional purposes connect the documented gifts to the family’s stated interests. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate the outcomes of the programs or prove that every grant is based on the same rationale.

What have the Samuelis said about their giving plans?

Henry Samueli told IEEE Spectrum, “We want to set an example and motivate others to get involved in philanthropy and be proud to show it.” The Samuelis have also joined the Giving Pledge, whose members commit to give the majority of their wealth during their lifetimes.

The foundation says that in 2023 the family updated its mission, vision, values, and philanthropic approach, and decided to accelerate giving over the next decade. That is a statement of strategy and intent; it is not a promise of a specific annual grant amount or a fixed schedule.

How should the “billions” claim be read?

The title’s plural “billions” reflects the combination of more than $1 billion already distributed and the foundation’s stated plan to give about another $1 billion during the decade. It should not be read as proof that the family has already donated multiple billions, nor as an exact current total.

When comparing Samueli philanthropy with another large donor’s, use comparable time periods and giving vehicles. A useful comparison separates amounts already distributed from future goals, foundation grants from direct gifts, and flagship commitments from cumulative totals. It should also account for the donors’ different focus areas and geographic reach.
