Its value depends on the species, location, season, size and condition—and on whether you mean the first payment to a commercial fisherman, a later wholesale price, a grocery-store product or the value of an entire fishery. As one concrete example, preliminary 2025 Alaska data put Lower Cook Inlet sockeye at an average of $2.20 per pound, while pink salmon there averaged $0.25 per pound. Those are commercial first-purchase figures, not what shoppers pay.
What does “worth” mean?
Salmon prices can refer to different points in the seafood supply chain. Before comparing figures, identify what was sold and who received the money.
Ex-vessel value: the first purchase
Ex-vessel value is the first purchase of raw fish from a commercial fisherman. Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) says its buying figures are self-reported by licensed buying companies and collected annually by area, gear, species and condition. The figures describe those reported purchases, not later sales. They also exclude dockside sales and estimated values for operations selling fish they harvested themselves. ADF&G explains its ex-vessel price data.
Wholesale and retail prices
Wholesale prices measure a later stage of the market. ADF&G reports weighted averages by species group, product group, area, species and product; that measure should not be substituted for a fisherman’s first-purchase price. ADF&G’s wholesale reporting page describes the separate data.

A retail price is what a consumer pays for a particular product in a particular market and on a particular date. A whole fish, a fresh fillet and a frozen portion are not interchangeable price comparisons. The available figures here do not establish a current retail quote, so they cannot answer what a shopper would pay without specifying the product and market.
Fishery-wide value
A total such as the value of Alaska’s annual commercial salmon harvest describes many fish sold across a fishery. It is not the price or earnings for one salmon.

What do recent Alaska figures show?
ADF&G’s preliminary 2025 tables show how much area and species matter. In Lower Cook Inlet, the reported average price per pound and average fish weight imply the following approximate first-purchase values per average fish:
| Species and area | 2025 preliminary average price | Average fish weight | Approximate first-purchase value per average fish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sockeye, Lower Cook Inlet | $2.20 per pound | 4.5 pounds | About $9.90 |
| Pink salmon, Lower Cook Inlet | $0.25 per pound | 3.1 pounds | About $0.78 |
The per-fish amounts are calculations—average price per pound multiplied by average weight—not quoted prices for individual fish. The underlying table is preliminary and may change; ADF&G also cautions that it should not be used for legal interpretation. See ADF&G’s commercial salmon ex-vessel tables.

For a broader but different measure, ADF&G reported Alaska’s preliminary 2024 all-species commercial salmon harvest at about $304 million. That statewide total was based on estimated ex-vessel prices and excludes post-season price adjustments; it is not an individual-fish price. ADF&G also reported a preliminary 2024 ex-vessel value of about $28 million for Alaska pink salmon, with an average price of $0.23 per pound. That figure describes the pink-salmon fishery, not salmon generally. ADF&G’s preliminary 2024 salmon harvest release and the 2025 Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute pink outlook report these historical figures.

When you see a salmon price, check that you are comparing the same kind of value. A useful comparison states:
Rank #4
- Raw Atlantic salmon fillet
- We require Responsibly Farmed salmon
- This item is raw and requires cooking
- Reserve by the each, sold by the pound
- Species: for example, sockeye or pink salmon.
- Place and year or season: a regional commercial price is not automatically a national or current price.
- Unit: price per pound, an estimated amount per average fish, or a total for a fishery.
- Market stage: first purchase, wholesale or retail.
- Status: whether the figure is preliminary and may be revised.
Without those details, two prices may look comparable while describing different fish, markets or transactions.
