To add an existing bank-issued debit card to Cash App, open the app and go to Profile → Linked banks → Link bank. Follow the prompts to enter and verify the card details. This links the card; it does not automatically add money to your Cash App Balance.
The steps below apply to the U.S. version of Cash App. Cash App may change labels or show different verification prompts depending on your app version, account, card, or security review.

Before you begin
Have the following ready:
- Your physical or digital debit card
- The card number, expiration date, and security code, if requested
- The correct billing information for the card
- Access to your bank or card issuer if an identity or fraud-verification prompt appears
Cash App’s U.S. terms describe an outside debit card as an External Card. It must be valid, issued by a U.S. financial institution, and carry a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover logo. You must own the card or be authorized to use it. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee acceptance: Cash App may limit eligible banks, card types, or accounts.

How to add a debit card to Cash App
- Open the Cash App mobile app.
- Tap the Profile icon.
- Select Linked banks.
- Tap Link bank.
- Enter the requested debit-card information.
- Complete any verification prompt Cash App displays.
- Return to Linked banks and confirm that the card appears as linked.
Cash App publishes the menu path as Profile → Linked banks → Link bank. The screens after that path may not look identical for every account.
What linking the card actually does
Linking creates a connection between Cash App and an eligible external card. You can then use an available card-based funding option, such as Add Money, to move money from the card into your Cash App Balance.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
Linking alone does not transfer money. After the card is linked, start the app’s Add Money flow, choose or confirm the funding source, enter the amount, and review the details—including any displayed fee—before confirming.

Debit card versus Cash App Card
An external debit card is an existing card issued by your bank or credit union. A Cash App Card is a separate debit card issued through Cash App’s banking partners.

- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. - Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
If you mean the Cash App Card, use the Card tab in Cash App and follow the ordering instructions. That is different from linking a debit card you already have. Cash App says standard black-and-white card styles are free, while some other styles or customizations may cost extra. See the official Cash App Card page.
Debit card or bank account: which should you link?
These are separate options:
- External debit card: generally useful for adding money and, when Cash App offers it for that card, making an instant transfer out.
- External bank account: generally the better route for a standard transfer, which Cash App says typically takes one to three business days and has no standard-transfer fee.
A debit card and a linked bank account do not necessarily support the same transactions. Cash App’s terms specifically state that a Mastercard-branded debit card cannot be used for a standard transfer to the linked account. If you want a standard transfer, link an eligible external bank account instead.

How to move money back out
Cash App may offer two transfer speeds:
- Standard transfer: normally free and typically delivered within one to three business days to an eligible linked bank account.
- Instant transfer: generally arrives within minutes when available for the linked account, but carries a fee shown in the app.
Instant transfers are not guaranteed for every linked debit card. Cash App’s terms say Mastercard-branded debit cards cannot receive standard transfers, so do not assume that every linked card can receive every type of cash-out.

Why Cash App won’t link your debit card
A rejection does not necessarily mean the card is unsupported. Work through these checks:
- Check the details. Re-enter the card number, expiration date, security code, and billing information carefully.
- Check the card’s status. Confirm that it is active, unexpired, and not locked by the issuing bank.
- Check eligibility. Confirm that it is a U.S.-issued Visa, Mastercard, or Discover debit card.
- Check authorization. The Cash App account holder must own the card or be authorized to use it. Do not use someone else’s card as a routine workaround.
- Consider issuer or Cash App controls. The bank may block the request, or Cash App may restrict the card, bank, account, or transaction for security or risk reasons.
- Use a bank account instead if appropriate. If your goal is a free standard transfer, link an eligible external bank account rather than relying on a debit card.
- Contact official support. Use Cash App’s in-app support route or its official help resources. Avoid phone numbers and “support” services found on unrelated websites.
Cash App’s terms reserve the right to limit eligible linked banks and account types and to restrict or delay transfers. Repeatedly retrying, changing phones, or reinstalling the app is not guaranteed to fix a rejection and could lead to additional security checks.
Can you add a credit card?
A credit card is not the same as a debit card. Cash App’s fee schedule lists a 3% fee for adding money from a credit card. Availability and transfer options can vary, so review the option and fee shown in the app rather than assuming a credit card will work for every feature.
