To work toward Executive Platinum, earn eligible Loyalty Points through qualifying flights, eligible AAdvantage credit-card purchases, and participating partners. The current official pages cited here do not establish the tier’s specific qualification threshold, so check the status table in your AAdvantage account before setting a target.
How the Executive Platinum qualification year works
American counts Loyalty Points in a 12-month qualification year beginning March 1 and ending on the last day of February. Status is valid from the time you reach it through March 31 of the following full year, subject to the program terms. See American’s AAdvantage terms and status information and its AAdvantage FAQ.
Do not use the 250,000-point figure on American’s 2026 Loyalty Point Rewards page as the Executive Platinum qualification threshold. That figure identifies a separate rewards level that includes Executive Platinum benefits; it does not establish how many points are required to earn the status itself. Confirm the current tier threshold in your account or American’s status page.
Which activity can earn Loyalty Points?
American’s published conversion is one Loyalty Point per eligible AAdvantage mile. Not every mile is eligible: program terms distinguish base miles from bonus miles and exclude specified bonus activity, including miles from offers and buy, gift, or transfer transactions, unless otherwise stated. Review the terms for the specific activity before counting it toward status.

Earn through eligible flights
Add your AAdvantage number to the reservation for an eligible American Airlines, oneworld, or other participating partner flight. The earning basis depends on the ticket and partner: eligible purchased tickets can earn based on ticket price, while some partner-marketed flights and fare types use distance and booking code. Check the terms for the exact itinerary and keep your ticket and booking details so you can verify whether credit posted correctly.

Government-imposed taxes and fees, as well as some optional charges, do not earn qualifying credit. American’s FAQ states that Basic Economy tickets bought on or after 12:00 a.m. December 17, 2025 do not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points, and canceled or unflown trips do not earn. Because the Basic Economy rule is tied to purchase date, check the current terms for your market and ticket before relying on flight credit.
Earn from eligible card purchases
Eligible AAdvantage credit-card purchase miles can count as Loyalty Points, but do not assume that every card-related mile or bonus qualifies. American’s terms apply exclusions to specified bonus miles. Its FAQ says qualifying card activity counts when it posts to the primary cardmember account, typically within 8 to 10 weeks. Near the February year-end, posting date—not simply the date you made a purchase—can determine which qualification year receives the activity.

Use partner activity when it suits your spending
American lists AAdvantage eShopping, AAdvantage Dining, car rentals, and hotel stays among possible non-airline routes. Its 2026 Loyalty Point Rewards terms also name American Airlines Vacations, SimplyMiles, AAdvantage eShopping, AAdvantage Cruises, AAdvantage Dining, and AAdvantage Hotels as participating partners for a limited-time Loyalty Point bonus tied to a reward. That offer requires registration and has limits; partner availability can vary by country and change over time. Check the current offer’s terms before acting.
Compare an offer’s qualifying rate, eligibility, and posting conditions with the real value of the purchase you already planned to make. Spending extra solely to earn points can cost more than the value of the points or status progress.

Plan around eligibility and posting dates
- Check the current Executive Platinum threshold in your AAdvantage account or American’s status table; do not infer it from a Loyalty Point Rewards milestone.
- Verify that a flight, fare, card transaction, or partner offer earns eligible miles rather than excluded bonus miles.
- Allow for posting time, especially for card activity, which American says typically takes 8 to 10 weeks.
- For flights, confirm the earning basis and whether the fare and booking code qualify; taxes, fees, and some optional charges are excluded.
- Read current offer terms for registration, country availability, limits, and any purchase or travel deadlines.
American’s AAdvantage terms and conditions are effective March 1, 2026, and were updated January 13, 2026. Program terms and partner offers can change, so use the current account and offer details when planning a qualification year.
