They built its capacity over decades through hands-on work, production improvements, investment in facilities and a growing team—while keeping the operation rooted in family participation and community involvement. Published sow counts have risen over time, but sources report different figures, so none should be treated as a definitive current total.
From 4-H and FFA to a farm of their own
Rob Brenneman’s interest in pigs began when he raised them through 4-H and FFA, according to his account in Successful Farming’s 2018 interview and the National Pork Producers Council biography. Rob and Char married and started their own operation in 1980 with 150 sows, a starting figure reported both by the 2018 profile and Iowa Food & Family Project in 2023. Brenneman Pork’s company website also identifies 1980 as the operation’s establishment year.

The early years involved building the business while holding other jobs. The 2018 interview says Rob worked for UPS from 1983 to 1987 while the couple kept their sows, and Char worked as a nurse until leaving nursing in 1988. They built their first barn themselves and added their first indoor gestation barn in 1988.
Growth through steady operational improvement
In the 2018 interview, Rob described growth as the result of concentrating on the hog business and improving the work behind each animal: selecting breeding stock, learning to feed pigs more efficiently, and upgrading buildings and ventilation. He also said facilities needed to be practical for employees to use. These are his explanations of the operation’s development, not independently measured findings about the causes of its growth.

That is his retrospective comparison, not an industry-wide statistic. His approach to improvement was captured in a line from the same interview: “Every day we got up and said, ‘We can do better tomorrow.’”
Why people and family mattered
Rob emphasized the role of the workforce in making better production possible: “Without the people, productivity doesn’t exist,” he told Successful Farming in 2018. His stated operating philosophy was to focus on doing a specific job exceptionally well: “Do one thing and do it better than anyone.”

The enterprise also grew into a family operation involving the Brennemans’ adult children and their spouses, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship award announcement. The 2023 Iowa Food & Family profile describes daughter Erin’s involvement in farm education and piglet care. The state announcement also says the family hosted community visitors, including elementary students; Brenneman Pork’s website describes local partnerships and community education.
Recognition and stated programs
The Iowa Department of Agriculture named the Brennemans recipients of the Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, citing animal care, environmental protection and community involvement. At the announcement, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said, “The Brenneman’s are real leaders in animal care, environmental protection and community involvement and it is an honor to present them with the Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award.”

What published sow counts show—and what they do not
Public figures show the scale reported at different points, but the sources do not give a common measurement date, counting method or operating boundary. The sequence may reflect growth, but the available accounts do not establish why their figures differ.

| Source and date | Reported scale | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Successful Farming, 2018 | 30,000 sows | The profile described the enterprise at that scale when published. |
| Successful Farming, 2020 ranking | 33,000 sows in 2020; 32,500 in 2019 | The 2020 Pork Powerhouses table ranked Brenneman Pork tied for 28th. |
| Iowa Food & Family Project, 2023 | 40,000 sows | The feature described the family operation at that scale. |
| National Pork Producers Council biography, undated page accessed in 2026 | Approximately 50,000 sows; roughly 1.5 million pigs marketed annually | The biography does not state when either figure was measured. |
The NPPC biography also reports 3,900 acres of corn and soybeans, but likewise supplies no measurement date. These figures add context to the operation’s reported scope; they do not resolve its current size. Rob’s reflection on production gains and the family’s descriptions of facilities, employees and community ties help explain the story behind the scale, without making the different counts interchangeable.

In his 2018 interview, Rob summed up his view of opportunity in the sector: “The thing about the hog industry is, if you work hard and you do a good job, there is room for you.” The Brennemans’ history reflects that belief in a particular way: beginning with a small sow herd, working through early years alongside outside employment, and continuing to invest in production, buildings and people. The sources support a story of gradual development, not a single turning point or a definitive present-day headcount.
