Syngenta is building its biologicals business through four connected moves: combining Valagro with its existing biologicals operation, adding research capabilities and partners, expanding manufacturing, and developing offers such as mycorrhizal products and soil-carbon programs. Its portfolio spans distinct product classes rather than one technology. These products may complement conventional crop inputs, but their uses, evidence and availability vary by product and market.

What Syngenta means by agricultural biologicals

In a June 2025 overview, Syngenta grouped agricultural biologicals into three categories: biocontrols, biostimulants and nutrient-use-efficiency products. The categories describe different intended jobs, not interchangeable products.

Category Intended purpose What to check for a specific product
Biocontrols Manage pests, diseases or weeds. Target organism, crop, application, local authorization and product-specific evidence.
Biostimulants Support natural plant processes, potentially including tolerance to abiotic stress or crop quality. Claimed plant response, crop and conditions, application method, and evidence for the relevant use.
Nutrient-use-efficiency products Improve nutrient availability or uptake. Nutrient program, crop, geography and how the product is intended to fit with conventional inputs.

Syngenta positions biologicals as complements to conventional crop protection and input programs. That framing does not mean a biological can replace a particular conventional product, or that results are consistent across crops and regions. Fit depends on the product, use and local conditions.

How Syngenta is building the business

Combining Valagro and Syngenta’s biologicals operation

In July 2023, Syngenta introduced the Syngenta Biologicals identity, bringing Valagro together with its in-house biologicals business. Syngenta acquired Valagro in 2020. The company said the combination joined its global reach and innovation capabilities with Valagro’s technology platform and technical and commercial expertise. At launch, the portfolio included TAEGRO biofungicide, MEGAFOL biostimulant and VIXERAN foliar biofertilizer. The announcement described the rationale and portfolio; it did not establish comparative performance across those products. Read Syngenta’s launch announcement.

Adding research assets and specialist capabilities

In February 2025, Syngenta announced its acquisition of Novartis’ collection of natural compounds and genetic strains for agricultural use, together with the transfer of the Natural Products and Biomolecular Chemistry team. Syngenta said the assets add capabilities in bioengineering, data science, fermentation, downstream processing and analytics. In June 2025, it reported that integration had concluded in early 2025. These are research resources and capabilities, not proof that any particular research lead will become a commercial product. Syngenta describes the acquisition and integration.

Syngenta also acquired Intrinsyx Bio in December 2024; the company focuses on nutrient-use-efficiency products. The acquisition adds another route for developing that part of the portfolio, but the announcement alone does not establish results for products in development.

Expanding manufacturing and research locations

Syngenta reported opening a 22,000 m² biologicals facility in Orangeburg, South Carolina, in 2025. The company said the facility was designed for annual production of 16,000 tons of biostimulants and complements facilities in Brazil, Italy, India and Norway. It also identified biologicals research-and-development centers of excellence in Stein, Switzerland; Jealott’s Hill, UK; and Atessa, Italy. These capacity and location figures are company-reported; designed capacity is not the same as actual output. See Syngenta’s facility and footprint details.

Using collaborations to develop the pipeline

Syngenta’s June 2025 overview listed collaborations with Provivi on pheromone solutions, Ginkgo Bioworks on microbial strain production, Intrinsyx Bio on nutrient-use efficiency, Lavie Bio on a bio-insecticide, Lithos Crop Protect on sprayable pheromones against Western Corn Rootworm, and TraitSeq on AI-assisted biological development. They represent different technologies and stages of work, not a single set of launched products. Syngenta’s overview names the collaborations.

In a separate January 2025 announcement, Syngenta said TraitSeq’s machine-learning methods would be combined with its crop-biology expertise to identify biomarkers for biostimulant development. That describes a development approach; it is not evidence that a resulting product is available or has demonstrated a particular field outcome. Read the TraitSeq announcement.

What the strategy looks like in specific examples

VIXERAN: a nutrient-use-efficiency example

Syngenta describes VIXERAN as a biostimulant based on the endophytic bacterium Azotobacter salinestris strain CECT9690. The company says the microorganism can live within plant tissues without causing disease and that the product is intended to complement conventional nitrogen-fertilizer programs. In a 2025 announcement with Ceres Biotics, Syngenta said the organism supports plant access to environmental nitrogen through leaves and roots. Those are company descriptions of the product and its intended role; they should not be generalized to every crop, region or nitrogen program. Syngenta’s 2025 overview discusses VIXERAN.

Groundwork BioAg: mycorrhiza and soil-carbon programs

On 14 July 2026, Syngenta announced a strategic partnership to commercialize Groundwork BioAg’s mycorrhiza-based products and soil-carbon solutions under the Syngenta label. The announcement identified corn, soy, cereals and sunflower as initial target crops in Latin America and Europe, with distribution in multiple other markets. Groundwork is assigned manufacturing, supply, digital tools and carbon-program development. The named targets are not confirmation that a product or carbon-credit program is available in every country. Local availability and terms require market-specific confirmation. Read the partnership announcement.

Mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic relationships with crop roots; Syngenta says they can improve nutrient and water uptake. The announcement identifies Groundwork’s Rootella line as a mycorrhizal inoculant. The agronomic product and a carbon-credit program are related parts of the partnership, but they are not the same offer: a product’s use and local availability should be distinguished from whether a farmer can participate in a carbon program and receive credits.

Amoéba: an active-substance approval is not a product authorization

In November 2025, Syngenta described a planned collaboration with Amoéba for EU and UK development and commercialization of a biocontrol candidate based on lysate of Willaertia magna C2c Maky. The initial targets were septoria tritici blotch and yellow rust in wheat. Syngenta reported that the active substance received EU approval in June 2025 following EFSA assessment and a European Commission decision, while authorizations for the formulated product were still in progress at the time of its announcement. Approval of an active substance does not by itself mean the candidate product is authorized or commercially available. See Syngenta’s announcement and its authorization distinction.

  • Highest quality ingredients help provide an effective and environmentally friendly approach to plant care, crop fertilization and soil management
  • Encourages rapid colonization of soil and soil less mixes and may be combined with other DTE fertilizers to further improve plant growth and yields

Syngenta cited an estimate that the two diseases affect 9–12 million hectares of wheat annually. It also reported Germany-specific estimates: septoria-related yield losses of 5–50% and annual costs of €1.5 billion, and yellow-rust yield reductions of 10–70% in susceptible varieties. Syngenta attributed these figures to industry and academic sources; they are not global estimates or independent product-performance results. The figures and attribution appear in the company release.

What the numbers do—and do not—show

Syngenta reported that AgbioInvestor and the company estimate the biologicals market could grow at around 10% compound annual growth and approach USD 20 billion by 2030. That is a forecast, not a measured current market size. Syngenta also said multiple pipeline candidates have projected annual sales potential above USD 100 million; this is potential, not achieved revenue. Both figures are presented in Syngenta’s 2025 overview.

Syngenta’s leaders have framed the strategy in explicitly corporate terms. Jonathan Brown, Global Head Biologicals & Seedcare at Syngenta, said in June 2025: “With our recent partnerships and acquisitions and extended manufacturing capacities, Syngenta is positioning itself as the leader in biologicals.” Camilla Corsi, Syngenta’s Global Head of Crop Protection Research and Development, said in February 2025: “We invest significantly to offer the industry’s most advanced pipeline of innovative agricultural solutions.” These statements express the company’s ambition, not an independent ranking or evaluation of its portfolio. Brown’s statement and Corsi’s statement appear in Syngenta announcements.

How to assess a biological offer in your market

Because “biologicals” covers different mechanisms and purposes, the category label is not enough to decide whether an offer fits a farm or is available to use. Check the specific product and intended use:

  • Purpose: Is it intended for pest or disease control, plant stress or quality, or nutrient uptake?
  • Crop and conditions: Does the claim apply to the crop, growing conditions and geography in question?
  • Application and fit: What is the application method, and is the product intended to complement an existing input program?
  • Regulatory status: Is the specific formulated product authorized for the intended use locally? An active-substance approval or development announcement is not enough.
  • Evidence: Is information about performance specific to the product, crop and use, or is it a company description of intended benefits?
  • Commercial status: Is the offer launched and locally distributed, or is it still a research collaboration, candidate or announced partnership?
  • Carbon component: If a soil-carbon program is involved, distinguish the agronomic product from program eligibility, credit generation and farmer payment terms.
