Buyers could place bids, sellers could set asks, and product pages displayed historical prices; StockX said watches sold through the service would be physically inspected. That describes the 2017 launch, not necessarily today’s catalog, fees, or transaction rules.
What StockX announced in 2017
StockX announced the watch and handbag expansion on May 10, 2017, about 15 months after launching its sneaker secondary market in February 2016. The company presented watches and handbags as standardized listings, with bids, asks, and detailed price history collected on each product page. StockX’s launch announcement named Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and Omega among the watch brands represented at launch and said thousands of watches were live. Those are launch-era examples and inventory claims, not a statement about what is available now.
StockX framed the expansion as an extension of its exchange-like marketplace. CEO and co-founder Josh Luber said the company’s growth in sneakers had validated the model and enabled expansion into watches and handbags. That was his launch-era view, not independent evidence that the format suited every watch buyer or seller.
How the bid-and-ask format worked
The marketplace used participant-set prices rather than a single fixed retail price. A buyer could submit a bid—the amount they were willing to pay—while a seller could post an ask, or the amount they wanted. StockX’s later watch guide said a transaction occurred when a bid matched an ask. Historical pricing on the product page gave participants context for deciding what to offer, but it did not determine or guarantee a future sale price.

- Bid: a buyer’s offer for a watch.
- Ask: a seller’s requested price.
- Match: a sale when a bid and ask met, as described in StockX’s guide.
- Price history: past transaction information presented as a reference for marketplace activity.
The “stock market-style” comparison described the presentation of bids, asks, and transaction history. It did not make StockX a securities exchange, turn a watch into a financial security, or give buyers investment rights. StockX’s 2016 sneaker launch announcement also described historical price and volume metrics, real-time bids and asks, and timestamped trades as part of the broader platform concept.
What StockX said about inspecting watches
At launch, StockX said each watch sold through the platform would be physically inspected for authenticity and condition. A later StockX watch guide described sellers shipping watches to the company for watchmaker review and said a certificate would list details such as make, model, materials, serial number, and timing-test results. These are descriptions of StockX’s process, not proof that an inspection can never miss a counterfeit or condition issue.

Contemporaneous reporting by TechCrunch said the launch accepted watches in “excellent condition” and described hand inspection. It also noted that the condition standard could be vague, with an interactive photo guide intended to clarify requirements. Those details reflect the 2017 launch and should not be assumed to be today’s rules.

StockX’s service has since evolved beyond the original curated marketplace. In a later announcement, the company described three platform experiences—StockX Verified, StockX Live, and StockX Listings—and presented Listings as a separate model for used, vintage, and other unique products. The announcement said Listings was initially rolling out to selected sellers and US-based buyers on iOS. It does not establish whether watches are supported in each experience today or whether those rollout limits still apply. Its launch-specific statement about zero seller fees for Listings is not a current fee promise.

A StockX guide also described a seller shipping deadline and watchmaker review, but those older company instructions are not enough to establish the current deadline or process for a particular transaction. Current watch availability, fees, shipping timelines, and buyer protections can vary by service and geography; check the live StockX watch catalog and applicable policies before placing an order or listing a watch.
